I remember reading an interview with a Native American elder - he was commenting on the fact that so many you men from his tribe enrolled in the military and had killed for their country. He worried about the eternal weight they carry for killing a human and sending them to the after life.

This scene is heartbreaking because Shoefield Kid learned his lesson about killing immediately, while Munny learned it far too late. Munny respects Kid,and is proud of him, because he was strong to change his path, admit, and understand that our deeds always carry consequences and that the path of outlaw sooner or later catches up to you,and when it does, the results are nasty. This was a path Munny could always walk as well ,but was too weak, too proud, too greedy to follow. Only after his wife showed him the light,he understood that the biggest hell he is about to face will be the realisation he could always do better. And now he has to deal with this realisation, and the contience who like a relentless debt collector will now squize him dry from his sanity.

....honestly is that what our 'vets' are feeling? This isn't the Vietnam days anymore. You don't have boys signing up and going off to war because they genuinely think they're fighting for freedom, justice, and to protect their folks back home. People know that's not the case now. You don't have draftee's either who have no choice. So what sort do sign up to join the military these days? The kind that think getting shipped off to kill for an Army sign-on bonus is a worthy trade. The kind that think a uniform will get them pussy and career advancement and/or respect. The kind that like or have romanticized the idea of taking a life. The kind that see service there as a nice little ladder step, before they move on to greater pay working for a PMC or a federal intelligence agency that spends its time spying on citizens and shitting on the freedoms better men bled for. Or the kind with genuinely no conscience who just want free license to destroy and don't much care about who the target is or what the justifications are. In short: mercenaries and sadists. Not patriots. This isn't Band of Brothers anymore. Soldiers in the US military aren't some noble group of heroes protecting their families and way of life. They're more akin to the Romans now, men signing up seeking fame, fortune, and power through military service. They're not fighting for you, aren't loyal to you, and won't stand with you when the Federal government comes down on the citizen. Such principles are dangerous after all and might hurt their pocketbook or career advancement opportunities. Rather, they may be the ones pointing guns at you, defending the ruling oligarchs against you. They love to say otherwise of course. "oh no we'd never turn our guns on the citizenry, it's against our pledge" but that hasn't stopped them in the past, and there are many in the present who've publicly stated how happily they'd do it if ordered. I think it's long past time we stopped glorifying these people just for existing and heaping undue respect on them for the grand virtue of making it through a boot camp.

Very accurate portrayal of what violence and killing does to you, not glamorized like every other movie does. I'm former Navy special warfare, and this scene can almost bring me to tears, as I'm not proud to say that in the line of duty I've lost count of how many lives I've had to take, and of course you try to justify they were the bad guys and hence "had it coming" but it's not much comfort, when you think that was someone's son, brother, husband or father, no matter how "bad' you think they were, they mattered to someone else

Just wanted to say that your post resonated with me. I'm far from violence, I've never been in a fight, but take some small comfort in the fact that you can feel these things, this pain makes you human, it makes you appreciate life more, I hope. You probably know more about the value of life and how precious it is than I do, maybe it makes you appreciate things more.

Amazing contrast between two characters. One searching for answers to what he's done. His eyes in front of him. Focusing on the bottle. The other remembers all the things he's done by looking into the distance.

One of the best scenes.. simple dialogue but tells the entire essence of the film...CE doesn't seem asking much from his co -actors just deliver the lines with your best ability and act as if those character. Don't dramatise. He just focus in telling the story through the film. Nowonder he keeps his films short and ready for editing quickly. No repeats and cuts again and again.

UNFORGIVEN It's a Hell of a Thing The young guy - clearly fantasizing about gun fighting - prods Clint's character to entertain him with stories of guns blazing and people getting shot. Clint responds with a speech that has stayed with me for the past 20 years: "It's a hell of a thing - killing a man; ... take away all he's got ... and all he's ever gonna have." ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ I was raised - learning to hunt - that all life is sacred. But, today our youth grow up surrounded by violence - video games; laser-tag; paint-ball; violent film. Gangster rappers glorify misogyny and murder - and our youth buy their music and sing their songs. Our youth have become desensitized to the act of killing. Teen boys grow up thinking killing is a game. And we wonder why there are so many mass shootings. It's not the guns. Take away all the guns - and people will still find ways (and there are many) to satisfy their lust for killing. It is our society; our decaying civilization - that is to blame; we are all - collectively - to blame. We don't deserve to be forgiven. We are the unforgiven. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ @2:58

The women didn’t forgive the cowboy. Bill didn’t forgive English bob. Muny got redemption because his wife Claudia forgive him. So he forgave himself. He foolishly walks back into a dark place to give her kids a better life. Ned warns him repeatedly but William blames the drinking & thinks if he stays clean he can kill a bad man or two for $ and go back to his life of pig farming but with $ now. But he is not a good killer without drinking. He’s full of fear which leaves him unsteady & incapable. They finally kill the cowboys and munys partner is crushed to be a murderer. He says he is sorry. In a manor he asks William for forgiveness as he leaves. We never know if he finds redemption. Ned is largely he moral anchor. His connection to the lost Claudia. William thinks he can punish a cowboy for what he did to the prostitute and it’s not that bad cause he’s a bad man. Ned wasn’t so sure. When William finds he’s wrong & ultimately Ned is punished for Williams actions. This sends William back to drinking, As he is reminded of what he used to know. There is no glory, no redemption, No cosmic justice. There is just luck, Once drinking William has lost his fear. The fear that dominates the posse & leaves them unable to shoot strait. Little Bill tho like English bob and William muny has embraced the dark side. He knows life is brutal and there is no good and bad. There is just black and grey, He’s explained to the writer that the cowboy myths are just that. That a steady hand is the best u can do. He’s been spoiled since leaving the mining towns. Little bill has become civilized. He forgets that people like muny have no fear. He leaves himself unguarded as it never even occurs to him that muny will come back for revenge. And to be sure. Muny essentially says that he is not coming back for justice, Just because one man killed his last friend & the only good man he knows, and another has allowed his body to be stood in front of his saloon & whorehouse. Muny felt forgiven thru claudias love and religious nature. Without her pulling him to the light he has slipped back into despair & violence. Go no longer feels like he can be a good man. He the years with her were something of an illusion. Where he wanted to become what he is not. Little bill is still a cruel man but he has found something. As William found his wife little bill became the law. He has a place. He’s building his roots here and his house. That is his redemption. But he’s now like muny as the film starts. He’s lost his edge. He has fear as he lies on his back. William remind him that in this cold world there is no justice. That “deserves has nothing to do with it”. William & bill are essentially the same man in a different situation. They could’ve equally fallen into the others life given the same circumstances. Which is likely why they have the same name. To make this exact point. When little bill tells William that he will see him in hell William agrees with him. William knows what he has done is wrong. He knows Claudia and even Ned would not approve. He believes he is giving to hell in both figuratively and most likely literally. He has said that Claudias love allowed him to forgive himself and as a new Christian he learned that god will forgive any sin. Now that spell has been broken. He can no longer believe it, he knows he’s Unforgiven.
