I saw an eclipse in 1984. It was cool and surreal. What made it even more interesting was that it got so quiet. All of the animals went silent. I didn’t think anyone else was outside, and suddenly a woman across the street said, “come over here, you can see it real good through these.” I almost started laughing - she was wearing a pink housecoat and slippers, and had on a welding mask. She flipped it up and had on super dark safety glasses as well. I’ll never forget that. She was right though, you could see it perfectly.

It would have been funny if after the eclipse was over, she would have said, “now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got work to do” - flipped her helmet down, and started welding something in her driveway.

I saw that. It was funny because I was standing in a huge field. The pulses of light from the edge of the sun almost knocked me out. Felt queasy and disoriented.

Oh that's so funny, I would've loved to see that. I was at a grocery store here in Phx (we only saw about 50% coverage during this eclipse) and an older gentleman pulled his welding mask out of his work truck 😅 I thought "oh that's perfect!"

I take care of the feral cats in my neighborhood, I am in Birmingham Al, we had like 80% coverage, ALL the cats started gathering at the garage for feed time @ 2pm instead of the normal time of 5pm. They were very confused and angry at me, standing there like are you going to keep looking at the sky or are you going to feed us or what??? EVERY time change it takes a week to get the cats back to normal as well, their inner clocks get all out of whack!!! This was really cool to see, thank you for sharing!

I gotta compliment you on thinking outside the box. Nobody is thinking about the animals during it. You go to a zoo to show what happens. Brilliantly done. I saw your thumbprint and immediately tooned in. Great stuff. 👍

Hey Chris, I saw that news article too where they were unsure how animals would react. If you go back and rewatch it, you could get the name of the researcher and submit this video because I think they would be highly interested in this giraffe behavior.

Thanks, Chris, what a great video. While the elephapnts didn't really react too much, and the giraffes seemed to have a delayed reaction, I appreciaed the premise of your time by them during the eclipse. One thing I noted here in Baltimore where we had an 88% coverage, is that it got eerily quiet just at the point of eclipse. A neighborhood that is most often rife with the sound of birds chirping was soundless. I look forward to all of your videos! Thank you!

Hey Chris. We weren’t too far from you. My brother rented an RV for his 2 kids, a friend and his 2 kids and I to road trip it up to Erie, Pa from northern Virginia on Saturday.. but then after the rain and clouds Sunday night we decided to leave early Monday and head west towards Cleveland. We found a spot overlooking the lake and watched it from Osborne Park. A beautiful experience!! One thing I noticed was just before totality, I saw a flock of birds flying in formation just above the lake west to east.. then as we came out.. that same flock flew the other direction east to west minutes later. Love your content. See ya in the next one.

Great experiment, but as we are also animals of the universe and this celestial event, the effects are not always immediate when you think the refractory of light so far away is delayed. I know the people I have talked to all have a sense of spaciness and tiredness despite getting sleep.

I happened to be sitting near a tree during the eclipse, and I was surprised that several birds fly from the sky and shelter in the tree despite the presence of several humans. My guess is that they think it’s night and retreat to where they normally sleep. I had to look it up because sure, but apparently most zoo animals have “bedrooms” where they sleep at night. My guess is that the giraffes (like the aforementioned birds) returned their normal shelter when it appeared to be night-but then came back out when daylight returned (and perhaps still couldn’t decide whether to stay or go given the brevity of the apparent night).

Thanks for doing this it’s actually an interesting idea. I wonder if maybe you should have stayed with the group of animals that are nocturnal and see what they did although they are naturally kept in areas where they aren’t outside. But interesting your observations on the flamingos based on all the videos I’ve seen of people recording the eclipse from wherever in the country they were it did seem like the birds definitely reacted to the eclipse. I’ve seen a few eclipse videos and in every one the birds definitely had a reaction to it. I find that interesting and very cool!
