Unedited: ProPublica Interviews President Biden, September 2023

In the wake of President Joe Biden’s poor debate performance, his opponents and most major media organizations have pointed out that he has done few interviews that give the public an opportunity to hear him speak without a script or teleprompters.
So much has been made of this limited access that the impressions from Special Counsel Robert K. Hur about his five hours of interviews with the president on Oct. 8 and 9 drove months of coverage. The prosecutor said Biden had “diminished faculties in advancing age” and called him a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.” Biden angrily dismissed these assertions.
House Republicans have sued Attorney General Merrick B. Garland for audio recordings of the interview as the White House asserts executive privilege to deny their release.
ProPublica obtained a rare interview with Biden on Sept. 29, nine days before the Hur interviews began. We released the video, which was assembled from footage shot by five cameras, on Oct. 1. We edited out less than a minute of crosstalk and exchanges with the camera people, as is customary in such interviews. See that original video and the related clips here: • ProPublica Interviews ...
Now, we are releasing the full, 21-minute interview, unedited as seen from the view of the single camera focused on Biden.

I worked in presidential campaigns and an administration, and can attest that it’s a brutal schedule even for people much younger. There’s a reason young presidents turn gray in a year! Clinton also had voice problems, so it’s not unique to Biden. Years ago, Biden was known for being a loose cannon - you never knew what he might say. I covered the 2008 campaign for the Huffington Post and after one of the Democratic debates, he said, “K-, you know I’m a straight shooter and always tell it like it is.” The biggest difference I see is that he’s much more thoughtful about what he says now. He thinks first and speaks in a measured pace and tone. That’s why he was finally able to win. Plus the fact that almost anyone looks sane and thoughtful next to his opponent. That debate should never have happened because it legitimized a traitor and felon, but that’s another story.

They should just let him go on the debate stage and be himself. Don't over prepare him. I was a skating coach for 27 years. You can over technique someone to death too! You can over train resulting in a subpar skating performance.. I do hope that in the next debate the gloves will come off, I hope he'll come out swinging. Lincoln was also criticized for being too soft spoken, too soft hearted, too kind. Biden is in GREAT company. Both Lincoln and Biden put country over the personal or party. Lincoln's cabinet members could not believe the appts he gave to individuals that were stabbing Lincoln in the back. When his cabinet members came in and said X is saying this and doing that against you behind your back; Lincoln's response was, I know far more of the terrible things they are doing than you, but they will do what is best for the country in this position......DT will ONLY serve himself. Indeed! Part of the poor performance can be attributed to strategy. It seemed to me that they wanted to do the unanticipated. To not be assertive but low-key. Factor in his age, travel schedule and reportedly having a cold. It all culminated into the result. It's like they were forcing things and tried too hard. Calculated effort.

Perhaps this is just an indication that his performance is inconsistent. Couple that with BS "cheap fake" narratives when he is obviously "glitching" and there's adequate reason to believe he's suffering mentally. Finally, it's not uncommon that people at an advanced age do well up to a point after which they can degrade rapidly. I'll admit that in prior years, he's performed decently (adequately) for his age more often than not. But starting perhaps last year, there has been a significant number of engagements where he's obviously challenged. Given that the media has gone out of its way to hide his age-related issues, what are the odds if this interview had been on a bad day, that it would have never seen the light of day. What explains his unwillingness to generally appear publicly without a teleprompter.

You can see some of his official engagements on PBS KZread channel. This was in the early afternoon, but the state of the union was at 9 pm. I don't think hes declined much in the last 6 months. Everything went wrong for the debate. He was heavily jetlagged, had a cold (I didn't believe it at first, but u can see him coughing the next day), and overpsyched. Not to mention it was probably the most stressful and important 90 minutes of his life, which he had been constantly prepping with his team. He choked. It takes brainpower to master the stutter and make the words come out right. I know, even at a much younger age. Call it cope if you want. Not saying I want him to be prez for 4 more years, but he's not a vegetable, and I trust him much more than the other guy.

This is from an AP article dated 6/26/24: "President Joe Biden pardoned potentially thousands of former U.S. service members convicted of violating a now-repealed military ban on consensual gay sex, saying Wednesday that he is “righting an historic wrong” to clear the way for them to regain lost benefits.... Those covered by the pardon will be able to apply to receive proof that their conviction has been erased, petition to have their discharges from the military upgraded and move to recover lost pay and benefits."

I don't think so. Watching him speak and even just walk lately, his is consistently out of sorts and just seems to be struggling. It sems to me his mental state has declined even since 2023. (this interview is 2023) I suspect he will be just as confused and slow for the next debate, which would confirm the 2023 Biden is probably gone. When people get to this age, this can happen. A year can make a difference. I am rooting for him, as a non democrat, as I want any sitting president to succeed. But he truly seems to be entering dementia. Hope I am wrong.

@@thembones1895Check out the Howard Stern show where Biden had an extended discussion two months ago. Every bit as coherent as here, perhaps even moreso. It's fair to say that he's not the Joe of five years ago but he did have a bad debate night. Some are exaggerating his challenges while others are minimizing them It's probably somewhere in between.

Wish this guy showed up in the debate. I believe it does help relieve some anxiety, but I need to feel sure nothing has happened between then and today. I think Biden should set somethings in motion and leave it to caretakers to see through their conclusions. The facts he spoke about in this interview show me he understands the problems. If the news media was presenting straight news like this, the country would be in much better shape. I generally follow PBS and NPR and prefer other sources that focus on facts rather than outrage and sensationalism. Tabloid news belongs next to the check-out stands, but who reads anymore? American TV has catered to the lowest common denominator right from the early days, and they seem to go lower every year. BBC TV probably wasn't as fun, but their news and entertainment have always been much more literate. But our problems are so closely associated with the fact that so few Americans know what's true and real anymore. I don't know much about the UK's failures.American media outlets are laughing all the way to the bank though, as our democracy and our freedoms are being stolen right before our eyes and increasingly boldly. I'm voting for President Biden because I see him as the best president we've had in 75 years and if he peeters out before 2029, VP Harris is fully capable of wrapping things up. And obviously, he's our best hope for preventing tRump and maga from pillaging and destroying our country all together.

I hate how much people now try to downplay how poorly the debate went. If you‘re currently making excuses for Biden‘t debate, be aware of this: HE DOES NOT have to convince YOU! He already has YOUR vote. You need to understand that he needs to get the vote of people who have NOT already decided to vote for Biden. And guess what: they watched the first 5 minutes of the debate and then despared. They won‘t watch this. They won‘t care for all the excuses for why the debate was bad. They care for the fact that he looked and sounded like a zombie during the ONE event he HAD to be fully there. Stop copying. We cannot afford to risk a Trump presidency, just because we don‘t want to hurt Biden‘s feelings. He did a great job during these four years. I like the guy. Now he‘s too old. And he has to step back. Else he will destroy everything, including his own legacy.

What a one-sided interview. Questions like "how would you advise someone to stand up for American values, but who is wary about talking to their MAGA parent about issues" are absolutely disgraceful. The interviewer also never follows up on any of the meandering and empty answers, he just barrels right on with the next question on the list, like some kind of robot.

THANK YOU ProPublica! I wish everyone could see this. The man is old. He is not senile. The man has a disability (stutter) covered under the ADA and on a stage with not so much as a Post it to remind him to “breathe” is imo a violation of a “reasonable accommodation.” The man has a lot to say- to the people, which interviews are designed to do- and many concerns and many wins- and sometimes he gets excited. He is not excitedly uttering complete bullshit . There is not a situation I can imagine where the President will stand/sit unaided or supported etc (and attempt to engage in an ACTUAL debate. Sit in front of a loud stereo listening to one song and you may still struggle pulling out a lyric that can lead you claim what the song meaning might be. Sit it front of 30 stereos loudly playing different songs- and let me know how that works out. On the opposite side- choose to disregard any rules or decorum, provide nothing but personal attack, vitriolic and factually untrue statement after statement after statement (repeat) and not even moderators gave him the “benefit of the doubt” as misunderstanding the question and reasoning it, and then saying factually- “ President X” by willful choice or lack of understanding has not answered the question, so we will move on. “ Allowing Trump to do what he did was a disservice to America- akin to Trump’s on going disservice to the country. I don’t think there is a candidate OTHER than Joe Biden that can -at this moment- win the election. I do not think Kamala has the support of older Democrats, and they vote. Listening to the comments on various outlets, I don’t think many men (they strike me as 40 or older if I had to guess) think that Kamala is ready.

@@bonnierussell9798The Dems didn't let us have a primary... and now they are refusing to listen to the voters AGAIN after we warned them that only Bernie could beat Trump in 16' & begged Biden not to run for a 2nd term... We begged and fought, did all we were told - still these monsters refused to codify ROE. We continued to fight still and told them if they didn't pass voter right protections, the Republicans *will* gerrymander & continue to suppress voters. They ignored our warnings. We screamed for living wages, affordable housing, healthcare, nutrition & education... Biden fought to give Manchin his Willow Project instead. This tells me his blocking of all those progressive bills was planned. The Biden administration serves their donors. Nothing more.. It had been obvious that money needs to be taken out of politics, the electoral college only exists to uphold *austerity politics* & national ranked choice voting would make for a much more equitable society. The neoliberal plutocracy we lived through kept most Americans just comfortable enough (and dumb enough) to keep us from revolting & turning this country into an *actual* democracy. ◇♤♡♧◇♡♤♧◇♡♤♧◇♡♤♧ Libs have done nothing but dismantle progressive seats every step of the way since 2016. They focused so much time fighting the left & replacing progressives with AIPAC recipients that they forgot who the *Real Enemy* was... and we are suffering from it. All because the silent & boomer gens are too selfish to pass the baton. History repeats itself once more.
