Unearthing the Tanks of Bullecourt

In 2017, the 100th anniversary year for the first battle of Bullecourt during World War One, a section of tank track was recovered as part of an archaeological project at the battlefield site. It is believed to be part of Tank 796, commanded by Second Lieutenant Hugh Skinner. Cranfield University has been providing archaeological research support to Operation Joan of Arc, an ongoing project aimed at amongst other things, trying to locate the final resting place of some of the tanks destroyed in the battle.

I was visiting Bullecourt when this tank was found and was privileged to be shown the excavation - including the skeletons of two German soldiers who were found with the remains of the tank.
