😥 Instead of loan forgivness for college students , this should be given toward farmers. We all have to eat! Here in New Jersey, I remember growing up with dairy farms, my Mother bought her milk from the farm. Now they are all gone some to just crops, some to condos!

Family farms are not needed any longer. Farms today have been corporatized for greater efficiency. This has been going on for decades. It is also one of the reasons why small towns are drying up too, as these communities were once supported by family farms.

They are still needed. A few reasons: 1) Crop diversity: Corporate farms are only focused on profits of produce that sells. Even livestock falls in this category. 2) Small farms more so tend to focus on sustainability and soil health for long term growing. 3) Quality and freshness: the small farm by me has the best fruit orchard. Corporate farms are contracted to sell to large markets, not the person who drops by their place. A lot of small farms still have Farmer Stands. Etc.

@@RusticVentures You make valid points. But I’m pretty sure the USDA looks at this in terms of feeding our ever-swelling population. Freshness and nutritiousness are deprioritized so that 333M people can be fed. Of course, the seed, pesticide and agricultural equipment manufacturers are pushing large scale agriculture. For them, it really is about billions in profits. This has had huge ramifications for Americans’ health. The processed foods that come from corporate agriculture have made us fatter and more diabetic than ever.

I agree but small farms are also important for biodiversity and higher quality and they need to stick around. Corporate farms care about profits, so they focus on the popular crop like corn and potatoes. Artichokes, for example, is hard for me to find fresh.. And the quality of small farm produce, to me, is better tasting.
