My grandmother would mix the deviled ham with a little mayonnaise and stir in chopped up sweet pickles. The pickles really made a big difference. I still remember what it tasted like 40+ years later, so good.

This stuff was a STAPLE of my childhood lunches in the late 60's, and something to look forward to daily. Underwood ham spread between two slices of Wonder Bread. Can of frozen Shasta root beer my mom wrapped in a #8 brown paper bag, so that by lunchtime it had thawed to a slushy consistency. Finally, a foil-wrapped Ho Ho or Ding Dong to finish off the meal. Good, wholesome eats. Yeah, I had it good as a kid. God Bless You, Mom!!!

I have fond memories of my grandpa making me sandwiches with this and mayonnaise when I was a kid. I still buy a can now and then, glad it's still around. I wish he still was. Miss you grandpa 🙏💜

When I was a poor 20 year old living on my own, my parents would give me 'care packages' on occasion. Along with Vienna sausages and canned clams, Underwood chicken was favorite. Smear it on two pieces of bread, slice of cheese, and loved it. Always gave me heartburn, but it was worth it!

Before I even watch this video I want to point out that I absolutely love the corned beef one, as a truck driver every once in a while you get a yearning for just a quick sandwich that tastes pretty decent and gives you a reasonable facsimile of a meal from home like corned beef and it hits the spot! 😂👍

Deviled ham mixed with miracle whip on fresh white bread my favorite when I was a kid. I'm 61 now, made some the other day still enjoy every once in a while.

If you like cucumbers, slice one in half lengthwise, remove the seeds, dice it into small cubes, and mix it in with miracle whip and a can of pre-cooled potted meat spread. Spread the mixture on your fave bread and eat it on a warm summer day. Refreshing and Yummy!

I remember back in the late 70's early 80's....i would come home after swimming in the apt complex pool, and lightly toast some white bread, and spread some Deviled Ham Spread on my toast....slap some yellow cheese on there, and enjoy it!!! 1 can was not enough....(yeah, we ONLY had 1 can in the house)....but we DID have bologna! so i would fry that up in a pan.....slap that fried bologna on some white bread, add some soy sauce, and have a FEAST!!! ahhhh.....memories!!! :)

I can't begin to tell you how much I have enjoyed your videos. Having been hospitalized for 6 weeks now, I can honestly say that your channel in a huge way has been able to keep me somewhat sane and always provided a wealth of good ideas which I will be implementing as soon as I return home. Your deep understanding of how very difficult it is to provide basic food for our families has lifted a lot of shame that i have felt in not being able to serve more gourmet type dinners but have wonderful alternatives that are hugely economical and better tasting. Once again, thank you so very much for sharing your amazing ideas and your honest down to earth approach.

I like how one of the main ingredients in the deviled ham was brown sugar, but it apparently contains no sugar.

Yeah, that's not true at all. If it is in the product, then it is required to be listed in the ingredients. Period. If it was cured using brown sugar, there would still be sugar in the final product. I guess you've never had a ham cured with sugar. You can taste it.

The fact that they list no sugar PER SERVING means only that each serving contained less than 1/2 gram. They rounded down. They are only required to list things by the gram. I don't think they are required to list fractions of a gram. If you were to take the whole can as a serving they would probably have to list the sugar as 1 gram, even though they choose to do so, usually to be misleading in some way (how are they using fractions to be misleading? Ask and I'll reply with one example). So there was obviously some sugar, just so little per serving that they are allowed to list it as "effectively" 0.

@@TANTRUMGASM the serving size is a key part of the goofy system of labelling in the USA. In many countries they are required to list the key nutritional measures per package or per 100g of the product. In the US there is some mysterious system of determining what a serving is, and of course that's often wildly unrealistic. I got a frozen pizza that claimed to be five servings. Okay, how exactly does one cut a pizza into FIVE pieces?! Obviously you can do it, but even more obviously NO ONE cuts a pizza into FIVE pieces! They do 6 or 4, or even 8 - but not 5! And yet FIVE was the "standard" serving for that brand. So who is creating these serving sizes?!! It did change. A while ago the serving sizes were a lot more realistic. Somehow someone didn't like the way those numbers looked and they pressed the regulatory body that decides what's a realistic size of various food servings to shift to something the food processors were more comfortable with. I'll admit it though, it had the effect of getting me to eat smaller portions some of the time. Want to get really angry? Measure out HALF A CUP of ice cream some time. That's what someone thinks is a normal serving for an adult. I want to meet that person. I've got some things to say to them!

Underwood makes (or used to make) a roast beef also. I haven’t seen it on the shelves in ages. But then I live in rural Nebraska where the grocery store doesn’t carry much variety. While I often had these as a kid, even better was my grandma’s homemade meat spread. Sunday dinner was often a beef roast or stewed chicken. The next day, Grandma would grind up the leftover meat with an old cast iron hand crank grinder, along with some ground up sweet pickles. Mix that with mayonnaise, and then spread that on either store bought white bread or even better, home baked bread. Food of the gods!

I am in NC and I had Never seen this brand. I just noticed it at a Food Lion grocery store for .56 each. This Roast Beef spread was originally $2.59 each for a 4.25 oz. can 😳 It has a long date and I figured that I could keep it as Emergency Rations or give it to my Tea-Cup Yorkie.

Underwood still makes a canned deviled roast beef spread. It makes an INCREDIBLE grilled sandwich.

When I was a kid, my mom would make me a chicken spread sandwich on white bread and mustard. I remember how good it was. Made me look forward to lunch.

You need to put a more generous portion of the Ham on like you did the other two meats. I agree they are all three great. Also, I am 61 and have been eating potted meat for well over 50 years..

As a kid and 60 yr adult I still occasionally eat Underwood's deviled ham. Never tried the Corn beef spread. But I plan to now. These simple spreads are tasty. Adding in fixins make them endless in use terms. Fond memories. 👍

I love deviled ham with mustard on white bread, it's AMAZING!!

plastisu did the job look at how it mixed it properly, look how it bwcame a spoon, plastisu is godlike, you can never replace it.

These are absolutely one of my favorites, I keep several cans of deviled ham on hand at all times for sandwiches.

Since I didn't have much of any food that wasn't perishable (besides what was in my freezer) I thought it would be prudent to stock up on some foods that would last longer than a couple of weeks. The reasoning for that was that I didn't know how long a lockdown would last and when I would be able to go the the grocery store once the lockdown started. I didn't think the world was ending, but at the same time I wanted to make sure I had food to eat. It turns out that it wasn't necessary, but then again hindsight is always 20/20.

We loved these as a kid. They looked special, and tasted good, though looked weird. I see them all the time at 99 cent stores. I still like them too.

Here's a sandwich our family loves: Mayo on one slice of bread, that ham spread on another slice. Hard boil an egg and just as soon as you can handle it, so that the egg is still nice and warm, peel and slice and put on the mayo side and sprinkle with pepper, salt if you want, or not. Top with the ham spread side and eat with a pickle spear on the side!

I'm shaking my head the whole time I'm watching this video! I used to eat these when I was a kid.

I am the man I am today because of Underwood Deviled Ham and I don’t regret a single sandwich! I spread it on bread with mayonnaise and mustard.

I used to have deviled ham sandwiches for lunch almost every day at school between 1st-3rd grade. I haven't had it since then until just a few years ago when I was roughly 23 years old, and it was a major nostalgia trip. I've gotten it once in a while from the store since then. I really enjoy it. I used to go to Catholic school, and it always confused me why I was eating DEVILED ham. Gee Golly Gosh, it even had the devil on the can! It felt wrong to eat them, but it also felt soooo right.

No matter which one you eat it always tastes really good if you throw in a couple of splashes of Tabasco sauce while you're mixing it

I'm completely fascinated by this guy.

When I was a boy in the 60s into the early 70s, their deviled ham was one of my favorite foods. Parents thought it overpriced and not especially good for me, which made it forbidden fruit. Tried some again when I was about 25 and simply thought it too salty and not complex enough in flavor. I'm glad that you didn't have as big a disappointment as I did on trying these again after many years. Interesting that the trans fat in the corned beef is the natural and perhaps harmless kind found in beef, and that in the chicken is the artificial and definitely dangerous kind.

Damn man...taking me WAY BACK...haven't had this deviled ham stuff since I was a kid in the early 90s!!! I remember enjoying this stuff with wheat bread!

I have several cans of each of these in my food "prepper" area.

I remember as a kid watching my mom make sandwiches for my dad , he loved fried bologna sandwiches with lettuce and tomato, fried spam sandwiches for dinner and he loved potted meats. I forgot all about these potted meats until today. I didn't think they were still making potted meats. Ad a kid I remember trying chicken potted meat, I liked it a lot but all these meats are full of sodium !

My dad sold this in his liquor store. I worked there when I was a wee little tyke. I used to love making sandwiches with this shit with your regular old wonder bread. That was about 25 years ago. I need to revisit this.

Growing up as a kid in a family of 6 in the late 80's early 90's, we ate deviled ham sandwiches quite often.. Mom would add mayo and some pickles, I never knew we were eating on budget until I became a adult and the primary provider of my own family..

All of that canned meat I now have in my “prepper’ s pantry” and I am glad that I do. It reminds me of my childhood as I fought with my parents because I did not like it, now things are different, I am glad to have it .

Things like these are life & money savers. Life savers when used moderation of course.

Deviled ham is always in my pantry. I like it by itself on wheat bread, just a lot of black pepper added

My elementary school would serve fried Spam for lunch 3 days a week! I still eat it. With eggs, on a sandwich...it all works.

I used to eat brand name spam often as a child and I have fond memories of eating. Tried it the other day and its gotten EXPENSIVE! Didn't seem as good as I remember though

Yeah like wth is with the 4 dollar price tag for SPAM? There are better alternatives though. If you can get your hands on a Tulip Jamonilla or the Korean SPAM from Lotte for under 4 dollars you're set for that SPAM life.

I've noticed a lot of these products have not only become ridiculously expensive lately they also aren't as good as they used to be, especially in the last 10 or so years. I thought maybe because I'm getting old my taste buds must be going to hell, but going by all the similar complaints I've been hearing from people some who are still really young its most likely not the reason.

I love all the spreads from Underwood. I was a kid in the 1940's and 1950's and remember them all well. I also worked for a grocery wholesaler and was familiar with them there.

My grandfather ate the underwood deviled ham every day for the majority of his life. Working in the automotive factories of the day, he didn't have much time for lunch and this was perfect.

My granddad would always take me to the bakery to get bread and the underwood liverwurst. I still love to eat it to this day sooo good

It's so difficult for me to do canned meat because of having pets (cats and dogs) my entire life. It reminds me of canned pet food but with salt and seasoning added. Seeing that these are literally ground up versions of the meats that they are I just might give it a try. Plus I am always looking for food storage products for when the zombies come. I will be prepared.

Hello World zombie apocalypse? ? I am more worried about my fellow man.just look at how panicked people get over weather etc.i have honestly started stocking up on canned stuff ,water, and first aide stuff .in case of a emergency i dont want to be out there in the madness.

It's definitely not pet food and I also have stocked up on it and crackers for when the Zombies come lol! It's a perfect back up just in case.

I used to love deviled ham and the corned beef as a child. It was A staple when we hit hard times. I actually craved them when I was pregnant. 28 years ago. Every year when we set up our hurricane/ disaster kit, I put in a few cans of these. In December, I donate them. When my son lived with us, he would eat them. I may have to try deviled ham again.

I recently rediscovered Underwood during hurricane season this year. I had no idea how long we would be without power, so I REALLY stocked up on canned meats like deviled ham and Vienna sausages and stuff like that. Now, during Louisiana's "snowpocalypse", I'm glad I stocked up as much as I did. I'm rediscovering it again. That's for the reminder to stir it up. Good video, Friend.

I grew up with my Depression Era grandparents, so like you I ate all kinds of stuff that my friends never ate. I used to eat potted meat and the Deviled Ham.... I'm going to have to try the corned beef for sure now . Thanks for sharing this video

Watching this guy’s videos brings back a lot of memories from my grandma, because potted meat Vienna sausages and spam and canned oysters. We enjoyed all of those when she was still here.

Underwoods was my Grandmothers family business and she always told me they made a reasonably decent tasting product at a fair and reasonable price. This was in the 60s at the time.

Omg back in the 60 this was a staple on every military table on base and party we went to. On white bread cut corner to corner , crust removed of course and topped with a cut black olive. What memories it's crazy I still remember what these products tasted like.

Thanks for the memory. I hadn’t thought of Underwood products since the 60’s! I can’t say I liked them all that much. Still, I’m glad to see they still wrap the cans in paper.

I tried the corned beef one after watching this video. First time ever trying potted meat and I have to say, I am now a huge fan of potted meats.

This was my favorite questionable meat product in a can when I was a kid! A very thin layer was plenty with this stuff.

I wanted to do everything he did and as a boy I had to mimic him EXCEPT EATING POTTED MEEAT🤣🤣🤣 I guess the reason we dont see men of his caliber anymore because we dont eat potted meat anymore. LMFAO------ I havent heard the words " POTTED MEAT" in about 36 years. You brought back some great memories. Thank you.

If you love potted meat, you should look for some British fish pastes. I grew up on fish paste sandwiches as a kid.

I love the deviled ham! I eat it plain between two slices of white bread.

I enjoyed Devil Ham and Chicken Spread when I was growing up. You brought back memories. The next time I go to the supermarket I will buy them and relive those memories.

When my mom used to make deviled eggs, once she got the yolks all mixed up, she would add a can of deviled ham to the mixture to put back into the whites. It made a very good deviled egg filling and now that I have seen this video, I am going to have to make some of mom's deviled ham deviled eggs. Thank you for the video. I also love potted meat. Maybe you can find some of that potted meat that was sold in the plastic casings in the refrigerator section, It was sold as sandwich spread and was potted meat with the relish already mixed in. Some good stuff when one is poor and one needs a quick meal.

I just made a miracle whip and deviled ham toast. My mother cooked out of boxes and cans I’m 46. Deviled ham is a gosh darn treat. As it could only give three good sandwiches on white bread the two of us besides her who noticed she was mixing the spread got the sandwich. If a third or fourth of us came in we had to share the salty treat. The fifth kid who came in from playing outside got beef bologna from Oscar Meyers. Growing up in the late 70’s and early 80’s. In Arizona where there was almost no fresh food except ground beef. Well this was a treat. I didn’t have real cheese until my 20’s.

When I was a kid this was decadent. Mom only bought this when she was flush. Served on crackers w sliced hard boiled eggs and grapes. Dont know why, just how she did it. We didn't watch TV during meal times, but this was a mid-afternoon, after-school snack we could eat in front of the TV. Still remember Dark Shadows and deviled ham!!

I've tried and I've never been able to get two servings out of a can! They're delicious!

Back when I was a kid in the late 60's early 70's my grandmother would pack the devil ham and crackers with some fruit, and the trading deals would at lunch time were pretty good.

When your poor any of these taste great, fried with eggs on toast. Sometimes my mama would fry spam or whatever was in the can. Then she would take a can of spinach drain it and add an onion, garlic, and scrambled eggs. She was amazing so making something substantial and somewhat nutritional from nothing. And it tasted great.

Currently living on my own for the first time with my gf. We don’t have much money, but we do have a lot of Underwood chicken spread. I’m glad that even though I’m much younger, I have something to relate too with others in this section. I personally like it with crystal hot sauce on some white bread lol

The underwood Deviled ham was the shit back in the day.... I loved it.

Back in the day my grandma would buy this stuff cause it was cheap. Now that stuff is over $3 a can so eating poor is getting expensive!!

Back when it came out the chicken spread was SO good. It got over the years to oexpensive and they changed it a little and it never tasted as good. I have a can in the cabinet from 2005. Its probably still good.

recently my friend told me about the chicken spread he made as a kid. and we made it. INCREDIBLE. i improved it tho. chicken spread with cup of mayo.. some relish.. mustard.. lemon.. some greek seasoning. salt and pepper. cayenne and paprika. and put it with cooked noodles. then into the fridge. AMAZING chicken salad noodle casserole kinda thing lol its amazing cold like pasta salad.
