Proper underwater strobe positioning is essential for lighting your subject, creating depth through shadows and minimizing backscatter. This tutorial focuses on the best strobe positions for divers shooting macro and wide-angle photos, as well as divers with a single strobe or dual strobe setup.
In this video tutorial, I demonstrate using an arm and clamp system to hold your strobes or lights, and even review an underwater strobe position rarely used by new shooters: portrait orientation.
I use many of the underwater strobe positioning graphics in this presentation during photo workshop presentations, so you can think of this video as a personal one-on-one workshop.

    Brilliant video, really useful info! I just got an “old” SEA & SEA DX-G1 and a SONY A6000 in a SeaFrogs housing. And some SEA & SEA YS-110 strobes (everything bought used on online actions for bargin-basement-prices over time). But I might have stumbled on a really cheap alternative for brand name fiber optic flash cables: In Hi-Fi Audio & Video etc. some audio devices use “TOSLINK” style cables, they are fiber optic cables for digital optical audio for sound/audio systems… but a 2m (6.6 feet) cable can be had on E-Bay for about $4-15 just add some tape and it just works. While a SEA & SEA (or other brand) cable can fetch $40-80 or more… Again brilliant video tutorial!

  • @BrentDurand

    @BrentDurand

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, a great idea as long as they stay in the fiber optic ports and work reliably. I'm a big fan of fiber optic cable solutions outside the extremely expensive specialized cables. Nicely done!

    Brent, I can't tell you how many times I have watched this strobe video and I learn something each time I watch. When to use S&S diffusers and when not to? What are your thoughts on using diffusers or do you just leave them in your room? Thank for all of your videos, I am a subscriber. Jack

  • @BrentDurand

    @BrentDurand

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks so much for the great comment, Jack. Really glad you keep pulling info from the video. I could keep talking on and on, so who knows what's in there ;- ). I nearly always use diffusers. With my Sea & Sea YS-D2 strobes I use the 100 degree diffusers. The 120s are wider but stop a bit more light. The 100s are plenty wide for wide-angle shooting. The only exception is if I'm mounting my homemade snoot, inwhichcase I use no diffuser.

  • @tikrman

    Brent what do you think of the new Globe type diffusers for UW use. They are great above water

  • @BrentDurand

    @BrentDurand

    5 жыл бұрын

    I honestly haven't tried them. I would think they would excel when shooting in crystal clear water when you don't need full strobe power. But if you need more power or more precise strobe positioning, then regular 100-130 degree diffusers are the way to go. I use 100-degree flat diffusers on my YS-D2s for everything.

    This was probably the most informative video I have seen on the subject. Well done, sir. Do you have any advice on what, how many and length of arms and how many should be the fat buyont ones versus regular arms that take foam inserts? I have a Sea and Sea D200 if that matters, dual strobe with GoPro in middle above camera body. Thanks.

    One of the best and most useful video that I have viewed. May I ask a question related to Wide angle setup? In most of my wide angle shot, I couldn't light up the object(s) that are just slightly further away. Is it more related to my strobe position, or the camera settings (using ISO400, 1/100, F9 at 15m)?

    Hi Wilson, thanks for the kinds words. Your settings look fine (of course I can't know the exact shooting conditions), so I would think your strobe positions are the issue. The subject could be too far away for the designated strobe power as well. I have more diagrams in the full Strobe Positioning tutorial here: tutorials.brentdurand.com/underwater-strobe-positioning/

I’m trying to balance the cost of one powerful light or two lower power lights, but want decent lights in the event I upgrade at some point to the TG-6. (Yes, I know I’d be adding strobes then) does it even make sense to add $1000 of lights to a $400 camera if you dive twice a year?

    Hi Caleb - Glad you found my channel. To answer your last question, it's really a personal question. If you plan to get into shooting underwater video, then spending $1000 on good lights for a GoPro that will then carry over to a TG-6 system is a nice investment. But if still photography is your end goal, then maybe go small on GoPro and save up for nicer strobes on the TG-6. Great video as an instruction Brent. I got some questions you might be able to answer. I am snorkeling/filming under water in freshwater rivers and streams in Latin America. I am photographing and filming tropical fish. I use a Olympus C8080 and SONY AX33 camcorder with housing on both of them. I am just beneath the surface in areas that got mostly just shallow water. How useful would a such big investment be to get a better quality of video shooting or photographs under water? Would a blitz for photographs be useful, or would natural light be sufficient? What if the sun doesn’t hit the surface as the water is surrounded by trees? Obviously some rivers and streams are brown colored, and those would be hard to accomplish something with. I am thinking about freshwater with clear running water.

    Great to hear. While the guide numbers are the same for both strobes, they should be "taken with a grain of salt" as the ratings between manufacturers are not always calculated using the same methodology. If both strobes are on TTL then they should fire evenly. If the Inon is slaved to the YS-D2J in manual then it will always fire at the power level you select on the Inon, which you will need to bump up or down to match the YS-D2J. I hope that makes sense!

Here's a article on WHY we use either/or: tutorials.brentdurand.com/underwater-camera-lights/ That said, it is possible to use both in certain shooting situations. Normally strobe and light settings are totally different, but you can 'blend' settings to use both. On those you can choose to trigger the strobes via fiber optic cable or sync cord with TTL (automatic). I'd suggest contacting your local u/w camera specialty store and having them discuss the options, as it's far too much to type. Good luck!

Great that you have the flex-arm how to help position the strobe.
