Underwater Photography Basics: Mantas, Sharks, Turtles, and Shipwrecks!

We go back into the water to photograph giant mantas, big sharks, friendly turtles, and haunting shipwrecks. In this video we’ll learn the basics of underwater photography: how light behaves underwater, how to get close to animals, and when we should (and should not) use strobes (flash) for better images. Unlike wildlife photography on land, we’ll be incredibly close to the animals -- sometimes inches away -- for some wonderful encounters, but we’ll also see a diver get too confident and illegally harass a great white shark. If you’re not a scuba diver, don’t feel left out -- we’ll look at the numerous opportunities available to snorkelers and why some of the best shots can be achieved at the surface. #underwater #photography #underwaterphotography #sharks #diving

Currently moving up the ladder in Scuba Diving. Taking a diploma in biochemistry to get into an marine biology degree. Will need to do a photography course too. Increment progress to become a marine biologist and underwater photographer. Can’t think of anything else I’d want to pursue 😍

Michael E. Holtby VERY nicely done, Bo! Your still and video skills are excellent. I've done 200 dives, but mostly used a Nikonos film camera. The digital options are so much better. You've obviously had some awesome dive encounters with sharks, rays, turtles, and more.

What a awesome video, the quality is superb. Question: I’m starting with scuba diving, I’m taking my certificate and after a while I will start UW Photography, I already have a Sony a6000 with a couple lenses and my goal is to shoot still pictures with it while I record a video with a GoPro, do you think for a beginner like me would be enough? It will be a hobby for the weekends here in South Florida. Thanks buddy.

Thanks for watching and awesome that you’re getting certified. The tricky part with gear is that underwater housings generally are specific to the camera body and they are expensive. If you buy a housing for the A6000 it may not be compatible if you choose to upgrade your camera in a year or two. So I would say determine which camera body you’re going to commit to because once you buy a housing you’re going to be with it for a while. GoPros are great for video - I use them a lot. Good luck!

Nice video!! I study marine biology and I want to start making beautiful videos of sharks (because they are beautiful). Do you have any tips on cameras and what kind of people I should contact that might take me out to dive/photograph sharks?

  • @BDPhotographs

Sure - actually depends more on your diving skills than your photo skills -- the more experienced you are in the water will give you best results. You can always start with a Paralenz or a GoPro and work up from there. There are many good shark diving tours - depends where you want to go and what kind of sharks you want to see. Feel free to message me through my website if you want more specifics. www.bdphotographs.com/about

Great video! Im considering buying a SeaFrogs housing for my A7c. Is it a good buy? What wideangle lens and strobes will you recommend? Thanks.

  • @BDPhotographs

Nice - I’ve never used SeaFrogs in person so I can’t comment on the brand. I’d recommend a 16-35mm wide angle for general purpose underwater photo and video. Strobes depends on what’s compatible with your housing. Good luck!

Not sure if you're likely to reply to this as it's an older video but would you have any recommendations for cameras for someone starting out? Was looking at gopros which seem useful but not sure about the image quality

GoPros are great for video (a lot of the footage in this video is GoPro) but not so effective for still images. So it depends what you want to do. Also factor in where you are with diving - new, intermediate, experienced, etc. If you think you’re ready for a compact camera and an underwater housing, I know some people who love the Sony RX100. Check out this article: www.uwphotographyguide.com/digital-underwater-cameras

Very few people on Earth make a full time career in underwater photography. But the passion and excitement are more motivating than the money for most who do it professionally or semi-professionally.

I’m the same way. I’m only 23 and I feel like I have to find something quick and something that I enjoy. However idk what I have a passion for but when it comes to the ocean I want to go swim with sea animals. I had an interest in shark biology for awhile but once I saw how many people were in a line for that I lost the desire for it

  • @BDPhotographs

I don’t know if I understand the question - are you asking why commercial diving costs more? If so, the training and equipment is far greater than what is needed for recreational diving.
