On 25 July 1946, the task force conducted their first underwater nuclear explosion: Test Baker. This bomb detonated 90 feet beneath the surface of the water. This underwater explosion threw tons of radioactive water onto to the decks of the target fleet. Eight of the ships in the target fleet were reported sunk, including the aircraft carrier Saratoga (CV-3)The Navy towed eight ships and two submarines to Hawaii for further radiological inspection. Twelve ships were determined to be safe and crewed for their return voyage to the United States. The surviving contaminated ships were towed to nearby Kwajalein Atoll for possible decontamination or scuttled in the lagoon of Bikini Atoll. Altogether, the blasts from Test Able and Baker sank 14 ships, not including those later sunk or scuttled due to their radioactivity.

That is one nasty mushroom cloud. Sodium isotopes are some of the worst.

As a result of this test, the Navy developed the NBC spraydown system that is on all aircraft carriers and most warships now. If you look at the deck of an aircraft carrier there are all the small flat circular things. They're all little nozzles to spray water and clean the deck.

UACs think it is unnecessary for us to have weapons of this magnitude and strength. They perceive it as a threat as well, supposedly it messes with their communications, because of the electromagnetic pulses that are discharged.

Watching this is slow motion, and frame by frame… Wow! So how fast does that shockwave travel underwater? It looks fast as hell. Is it the speed of sound underwater, which is 3348 mph? Versus 760 mph in air? Looks about right.

From this distance, it's very hard to see, but I'm sure it was raining radiocative water on most of those warships. The ones further away I'm sure people would survive the initial blast, but it must be terrifying.... The footage of all that must exist. it's really crappy they don't declassify it all. I'm sure they had cameras on those ships.
