Fun Fact: The reason why Asgore is holding his trident at the reverse way is because it is to kill smaller targets, and Frisk is a child and child means small person and small person means small target.

Asgore doesn't destroy the mercy button to stop you from escaping. It's because he feels that he doesn't deserve mercy for the six human lives he has clamed prior.

His name probably would've been yellow from the start too.

He never intended on winning that fight. He destroyed the mercy button so that we couldn't spare him. He's well aware of our abilities, as proven by his nodding when we say that he's killed us however many times. He could have taken our soul after killing us, but he let us try again and again until we finally freed him.

while i agree that knowing more about him in the game would be good, not telling much about him is good too for the fact that it keeps his ominous presence, he is always mentioned as a kind person, but he is the final boss, so mystery is kind of appreciated in that sense. not to mention, his fight alone (attacks, soundtrack and actions (sprite movement, the fact that he breaks the meecy button, or even interactions with the things you use on battle to recover) is enough to explain his character, and the pacifist route gives us more to explore and understand his long, yet short tragedy.
