Understanding the Windows Registry
Ғылым және технология
A classroom lecture. We will explore the Windows registry and file structure. The registry is loaded in RAM when the operating system loads. We will look at registry hives, keys, and values. Registry keys are container objects, registry objects are like files. Know where your registry is located on the hard disk. We will look at the critical keys of the registry: SAM, HKey_Local_Machine, and more. We discuss restore points and other techniques of registry backup and recovery. This video has been updated on our channel!

Very detailed and informative session. Lot of information shared. Thank you very much!
Great registry tutorial!! - as primarily a linux admin I did want to touch on the beginning of the tutorial when comparing OS X, Linux and other OS use of config files. Linux (and most UNIX), for example, keep most of the config files in /etc directory and those files end with .conf. Only dot files (files that begin with a ".") are hidden to a user. This does include some files that are used for configuration - for example .bashrc is located in the users's home directory is read and used to configure settings for the bash shell... but putting a dot at the beginning of a file simply hides the file - any type of file can / could be hidden using this notation. IT is analogous to right clicking on a file or folder in Windows and choosing the Hidden checkbox. A file named podepad.txt will still be visible on a Linux system but since it uses DOS formatting instead of UNIX the contents of that file will loose it's formatting.

yeah, when he said I became very confused, because it made absolutely no sense. I am a hobby computer guy, and have been learning linux systems for a few years. Yes, the files are simply ascii files, and of course you can see them. Not only that, linux is an OS where being able to customize ANY file is at your finger tips. It is the exact opposite of what he said.

Awesome stuff, sir. I wished I'd have found this a long time ago.
Thanks for the great content. When Windows and Windows programs used to rely on .INI files, I had a lot of confidence editing them. But with XP and the shift to the registry, I got pretty intimidated and kind of went from a power user to more of an end user. This video has finally provided that spark I was looking for to master the reg. _hell yeah!_

Lowell Vanderpool Haha, yeah. (Shhh ... don’t tell anybody.) In the last couple of years I’ve been discovering more about the Windows OS and have been really astonished at how much territory I’ve left uncharted. KZread channels like yours are helping to peel back the layers. There’s really so much power there. Also, that was something I always felt was a distinction between the typical Mac user and someone who gravitated more toward Windows. Mac users typically wanted to be shielded from knowing very much about their systems. Whereas Windows seems to invite the user to dig into its layers.
His angelic confession at 22:13 nearly melted my heart

Thanks for the intro. I'm getting ready to edit the registry because I need a specific application to prefer IPv4 to work properly. This provided a great intro so I have some idea of what I'm looking at and how to protect my computer from the potential stupid mistakes I will probably make in such a critical part of the computer. I'll be following a tutorial but I didn't want to be making changes blindly.
