Understanding the Prices of Boer & Kalahari Red goats
The price depends on what class of animal you are looking for. There are 4 classes of Goats
1. The pedigree full blood (stud) goats which are the most expensive. There is no maximum price. You can get it for as high as 50,000 USD (35 million naira) or more in an auction. But you can get it from 2 million naira in my farm upwards depending on age and gender. I recommend your buck to be of this quality.
2. Full blood Commercial Goats. These are the second class of goats usually for commercial breeding purposes. Most does can be of this class but in Nigeria they are rare to find because most Boer Goat owners are still stocking their farms. In my Farm a doeling will go for about 1.8 million - 2 million if they are available. In South Africa you can get a doe of this class for about 500 USD but the cost of importing it makes it a lot more expensive with all the stringent requirements. In 2017- It cost me about 750,000 to bring in one doe.
3. Purebred Boer goats and field goats - these are goats that you cannot prove their origin. They look like Boer goats, but their progenitors may have been crossbred with other breeds. You can get these goats for about 1 million.
4. Meat goat is the last class of Goat usually a goat culled from the stock due to:
- age (too old to breed)
- defects
- illness
- etc
Such goats can be bought for about 200,000 - 250,000 naira depending on reason for culling.
---
How do you make money when they are so expensive?
There are 3 important streams of income for these goats.
1. Semen for AI sells for 50 -60 USD per straw depending on quality of Sire. A goat can give 2 - 3 semen “harvests” a week. Each harvest can be about 10-15 straws. If it’s just 10 straws twice a week that is 20 straws x 50 USD = 1000 USD a week.
2. Pure line breeding- as in the case of the buckling sold above.
3. Crossbreeding with local goats
F1 crossbreed with WAD or SR sells for at least 150,000-250,000. If you had 200 of such does and they all gave birth to just 1 goat - you have 200 kids. If you sold just half of them at 150,000 - how much are you making?
Now you understand!

New to your channel sir. A novice speaking here🙋. I'd like to know how the crossbreeding is done between the Kalahari and the west African dwarf since the Kalahari is like 5x the size. Is that via artificial insemination or it actually mounts the local goat? I heard someone say a local goat died when he tried mounting it with a Boar.

For natural mating- You should use younger smaller Boer or Kalahari red buck between the ages of 8 months and 14 months. They are able to mate naturally.

@@johngodson Thanks for the response sir. And at the time of delivery, don't the local goats have issues delivering a hybrid kid considering the kid would be larger than the pure local kid it would have had originally? I ask this because I saw on a forum that this happens but I'd prefer to confirm from a reputable source like you sir.

@@abiboyebamiji1736 They do If You dont use the appropriate quality of local does. Here are the conditions the doe must Meet so as not to have issues. 1. They should be large. 2. They should not be delivering for the first time. Use does that have had at least one delivery before using for crossbreeding. Whatever the situation - make sure you have a vet on standby to intervene if necessary.

All these so-called foreign goats are just feeling good to have. They are not commercially viable in Nigeria. We need to work on our local goats to improve their genetics rather wasting time importing using our scarce forex resources. I wish folks like you can do that.

How Can You improve local breeds without crossing with the imported breeds? Local goats weigh as follows: West African Dwarf 15-25kg Sokoto red 25-35kg Sahelian 25-57kg Compare to imported breeds Boer - up to 170kg Kalahari red- up to 160kg Crossbreed between local and imported goats weigh between 45kg and 65kg Finally every farmer should breed goats depending on the niche they decide to occupy. As to economic viability or feasibility of breeding imported - a lot depend on your location and network. ROI range from 30% to even more than 250% in case of crossbreeding.
