Understanding The Persona Series

Ойындар

Why is this little spin-off series so popular nowadays? What is it that some people don't understand about it? In this video, I will explain in the most concrete way I can, why the Persona series is so successful nowadays.

I started at persona 4, for ps2, and then got really invested in basically every shin megani tensei game I laid eyes on. Absolutely zero regrets but also absolutely zero $ during my college years as it'd all go to ps2 RPGs, lol

I just got into SMT and it's one of my new favorite series. I finished IV and bought Apoc, Nocturne, and SJ Redux. Persona is kind of different though isn't it? It looks very Japanese and I don't care for the high school settings, I much more care for the serious settings of SMT. So I'm not sure I'd like Persona but that doesn't really matter much because SMT will keep me occupied for a long ass time.

I was lucky enough to play through Persona: Revelations when it came out in the US on PS1. I remember my friends and I absolutely loved the game even despite flaws like its relatively slow gameplay and (for the time) complex and in-depth game mechanics. We all loved the silly music that plays when in the drugstore, and we'd sometimes try our best to sing it for laughs. But what really kept me intrigued with the game (aside from the mechanics) was the dark story and the well-developed main characters; it definitely has a cosmic horror vibe to it, which is one of my favorite genres (and for which I didn't have a name for at the time until I discovered Lovecraft a few years later).

All they did is combining SMT and Tokimeki Memorial, simple as that SMT as a whole is always an engaging series and added with the infamous life simulation Tokimeki has, you got yourself a perfect balance Which could be the reason why P1 and P2 didn’t blow up at first since they haven’t found the perfect formula yet

To be honest, I was introduced to Persona games through my cousin. She played Persona 3 FES whenever I met her at my grandparents' home. Come several years later, I got to play Persona 3 Portable via PSP emulator, 4 months ago, I got to play Persona 4 (vanilla one) via PS2 emulator, and last month, I got myself Nintendo Switch and finally got my hands on P5 Royal... I found myself really enjoy a lot when it comes to fusing Personas with different skills, and I admit... playing Persona games is one of my satisfaction in my life, and I don't regret it. I definitely can't wait to buy Persona 4 Golden for Nintendo Switch next...

However one issue I have with the modern Persona titles is just how little they have actually progressed in terms of structure and innovation ever since 3 was released. Even P5 was basically just the same we had gotten before with a new coat of paint. Strip away all the flash, you have basically exactly the same game we played two times over already. And that's before getting into how it hamstrings itself and its characters by tying character development to the social links rather than having them develop organically in the story. If anything, to my eyes, what makes these games so popular is that they appeal to certain power fantasies more than anything else. They create a perfect, invincible hero that is always right and gets all the girls swooning over them and then make them stand-ins for the player.

That's the point of all Dating Sims - young, invicible hero covered by horny girls (this it's what why call ,,harem'' trope). But compared to other Dating Sims, Persona was not only first game released in West with those tropes (maybe aside of Thousand Arms, game published also by ATLUS), but also in most popular anime setting for teenegers - highschool setting. If you want a Dating Sim hybrids, when characters are developed mostly in story, instead of Social Links (Persona) / Events (Fire Emblem) - you should try older Sakura Wars games, games from 1996 - 2005, and they still doing this better than any Persona game. But in my opinion the worst thing in modern Persona games is definitely Calendar - this thing ruins story pacing and slows down New Game +

I see on here that I'm not the only one who's played Persona without loving it. I managed to beat P5R, but didn't get along with the time management and school simulation stuff at all. I didn't like any of the imposed time constraints and didn't particularly enjoy the battle mechanics, which was perhaps because I enjoyed those in Soul Hackers 2 so much. In SH2 and SMTV I replayed many of the bosses several times, but in in P5R couldn't be bothered replaying any of it.

Most jrpg's series are stand-alone games. Persona is one of thee best stand-alone jrpg series that gets better with each release. For an interconnected series, it's the Trails series. I consider both series, Persona and Trails must plays/bucket list games. Truly quality games in a genre filled with tropes and generics.

Didnt play p1 since it aged poorly but p2 duology has the best story in the series period. Its so good and original, and characters are great. Its kinda a grind fest but on the emulator you can speed it up or cheat to reduce the grind. P2 is 100000% worth it.

I started my Persona gaming experience with Persona Q. I then played P3 and P4 using the PS3. I then got a PS TV to check out P4 Golden but decided to get a Vita to appreciate the game on the OLED screen. I then played P5 on the PS4. I'm on the fence on playing P5R on the Switch. I did check out the psone titles in the mix as well as the fighting game, but didn't play many hours of each game. Overall, it's a great franchise but I want to see a new game in a more grown up setting if possible.

Loved SMT V, Nocture not so much. Persona5 also was a hit for me. Do you think Persona4 will click with me? Liked the dungeon aspect of it, paired with "mysterious" castles. Exploring got old on me pretty fast and mainly focused on getting maxed out confidants.

  • @nworder4life

    @nworder4life

Just be aware that the dungeons are basically floors that all look the same. You start at the beginning and you find the door or stairs to the next level, each person thrown into the TV has a theme repeated on every floor of the "dungeon" and the floors may have a gimmick that tries to make it a little more interesting. If your expecting the dungeons you got in P5 you are going to be very disappointed. Other than that though, the story in P4 is very good, characters great and the social links pretty damn good.

I do prefer the main line SMT, because after Persona 2 ones , feels more like if you take SMT concept and put as is always inside a Disco, the soundtracks is what actually drove me away...personally I don't like them, too much vocals , upbeats, I don't know it breaks the illusion you are 'fighting demons/spirits' and such... I prefer more atmospheric soundtracks, that let you forget the music, and that someone is singing pop music...

the main goal from the persona spin off, was literally to advertise for the main series, that's why it's named "Shin Megami Tensei: Persona" when Megaten games are WITHOUT JOKING, *FOR ADULTS ONLY* they talk about philosophe, life, fates, and much more. persona are more for casual players. dating sims, school life, etc. if you like dungeon crawlers, megaten is your game, if you like more easy casual gaming, persona is yours, also .. megaten has over 50 games in total .. who would have thought that a BOOK named "digital devil megami tensei / digital devil resurrection of the goddess" would ignite a dungeon crawling empire of games?! if you need more info.. go visit macca's channel he's a mega ten specialized content creator.

The only Persona, or indeed Shin Megami Tensei game I've ever played is Persona 5 and... I kinda hated it, I'm sorry to say. I "only" played for about 12 hours, but I found myself bouncing off so many aspects of the game that I gave up. I hated the characters, the music sounded like restaurant ambience, the lyrics during combat grated on me and the over-designed UI gave me a headache. I never got to the meat of the life-sim stuff, but I tend not to like that kind of thing anyway. It doesn't help that I hated High School IRL and thus I don't have the same nostalgia that seems to fuel a lot of peoples love for this series. Indeed, the only thing I truly liked about the game was the press-turn combat. It's a good turn-based system in an industry that seems determined to abandon such things.
