Understanding the Federal Pell Grant

This video discusses what a Federal Pell Grant is in the financial aid process for colleges and universities in the United States. A Pell Grant is free money (it does not have to be repaid like a loan) that the federal government provides to students with high financial need (students that have a low Expected Family Contribution). The Pell Grant is available to undergraduates, although students in postbaccalaureate teacher certification programs may also be eligible. The max Pell Grant for the 2016-2017 school year is $5,815 although this amount changes annually. Students must submit the FAFSA form to have a chance at receive a Pell Grant. If they receive a Pell Grant, it will appear in the financial aid award letter from their universities. Colleges have no discretion in deciding whether a student receives a Pell Grant; it is up to the federal government, not the colleges, and students who receive a Pell Grant can take it to whichever college they decide to attend.

    The max 12 semesters explanation is partially incorrect. You can only use a maximum of 2 semesters a school year currently so you actually have up to 6 full years of eligiblity (2 semesters per year). If you go Summer, it does not count as a semester at most schools.

    Idk wtf i was thinking trying to sign uo for college 😂😂😂 and that FAFSA and all that grant shi+ is fake af. College is a scam 100%. I was going to go for beekeeping and different farming classes such as aeroponics and aauaponics and fish farming and studying animals, and different urban farming methods as well as ancient and modern primitive farming methods but instead of paying for school i did free internet research and now i already have a small banana plantation with 100+ banana trees, a small apiary with 5 bee hives, a small chicken farm with 70 chickens an I'm trying to figure out how to get a small aeroponics system set up indoors which can grow 1,000+ plants and all of this was accomplished for WAY cheaper than college. If i would have went to college i would be in debt amd would never get any of this.

    I checked your channel to see the list of financial aid related videos and did not find it. Did I miss it. I am trying to understand how financial aid is determined when EFC exceeds COA. How does the college determine how much support they will provide in terms of loans / scholarships, etc. For example would somebody qualify for subsidized loan that is allowed under federal regulations. Will somebody be able to get a scholarship (merit based I guess), work study, etc. How does these various streams of money work when EFC exceeds COA. Any explanation on these will help

    Ramesh, I have 25 videos on getting financial aid for college, which can be viewed here: edspira.com/lessons/getting-financial-aid-college. I believe you would be eligible for PLUS loans at a minimum. Each school determines scholarships independent from the government, so you could be eligible for a scholarship as well.

  • @Edspira

    @Edspira

    Your GPA does not matter for the Pell grant. How much you get depends on where you go to school, how much your school costs, and what the government decides your family can contribute. Good question!

    Hi i received a pell grant this fall 2019 and 2020 for s total of 2750 dlls. In fact it was accepted from fafsa just waiting to be reflected on my tuition. School called me to cancel my pell grant because they said i completed a bachelors degree in another country. Which i put that on my first application of 2018 but corrected for the 2019. If federal government accepted already. School is allowed to reject it? They are forcing me to pay full amount of my tuition now. Thank you 🙏

  • @LeMeDuh

    Yasmin, Hello yes I can’t believe it’s been three years already lol. But yes I did figure it out. The FAFSA money given out will appear as “Pell grant” in your student account. In my case I got the Pell grant (from FAFSA) and I also got a scholarship from the school I attended. Usually the school will pull out the money automatically for your classes registered from your student account. Once your Pell grant is applied to your accounts your account will balance out and the remaining money will be sent to you in approximately 2 to 3 weeks after class have started. Also don’t forget to buy your text books and stuff like that!

    @@LeMeDuh Hi. I just sent in my Fafsa form and it said I’m eligible for max amount of pell grants. Does this mean the school of my choice will give me max amount as long as I qualify for it?

  • @LeMeDuh

    @LeMeDuh

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@raeg410 Yes usually it will be sent to the school of your choice, and they will disperse that money to you, but it depends on what type of school you go to. I know some schools only go by loans. But usually community college and most schools will accept FAFSA and they decide how much money they will release to you based on how many classes you’re taking/full-time or part-time. It does take a while so you must be patient. Sometimes the school doesn’t let you know how much money you’ll get until a few weeks before classes start. My best advice is to just register for the classes you want as soon as possible, and then go from there! I hope that information helps, but if something doesn’t make sense or you have more questions, feel free to ask. I just finished my CNA (certified nursing assistant) class and I am going to get my license once I passed my state board exams. Next year I’m going to start RN classes at a University to get my bachelors of science and my license for RN (registered nurse).
