It makes citation for its claim or else it gets the hose again... I've often seen it said, but they don't say in what way- is it as tough as copper against a steel blade, tensile or shear strength etc. That being said, it's interesting to think that the most infinitesimally small line of metal of along the very cutting edge of a blade is responsible for the scary sharpness. I've heard stropping is more about straightening that edge if it's been wrinkled, folded or dented by particularly thick hair etc.

I know several guys who say that a straight razor shave is on their bucket list. I always suggest they just ask their barber next time they're getting their hair cut, but none are game enough. People are often surprised when I tell them that I've had one before. I wasn't that concerned, and actually enjoyed it (Although my face did feel pretty raw afterwards) Overall, I don't think I'd be willing to shave myself with one, but certainly will get a shave from a professional with one again.

As a professional barber with a passion for straight razor shaving (it’s what got me into the biz), and someone that has been using a straight razor since July 2013, I love that there is a video on such a large channel, and that Earl is dishing out a lot of good information. There are really only a few fairly minor items I would correct on the technique. Great job Earl. 27:58 Earl gets real nervous(rightfully so) then some really good blade safety for the situation at 28:08. 29:22 in my opinion it is easier to shave someone else than shave yourself.

They mentioned them before, but if you’re looking for a close shave with less chance of maiming yourself, a safety razor will also do an amazing job! They’re very inexpensive, and blades for them are dirt cheap and made of cool shit like tungsten and stainless steel. Also using a brush and either a cream or a soap with exponentially increase the quality of your everyday shave regardless of the tool you use for hair removal.

The answer to the question of shaving cream, “Do I apply it thick or thin?” has to do with moisture retention. If you apply the cream thin, you run the risk of the foam becoming dryer by the last third of your shaving, causing more drag on the blade (especially in dryer climates). If you apply the cream thickly, the cream and your beard stay moist and soft to the very end, resulting in a smooth shave. This is especially true if you use a brush with shaving “soap” as I do.

Atta boy old cock. That's hellishly true. Add also that soaking the face in hot water( as hot as can be born) for as long as possible is a hellishly good aid. Hey, y'all Young Ricky is right the thicker the cream/foam the more cover there is for the hair underneath and less chance to dry out. Give Ricky old cock a cigar, he's a good hoss.

I keep a clean-shaven face and always apply a very conservative coat of gel. For me personally, any more just feels redundant, but I can imagine "drying out" to be an issue for someone doing shaping work etc. I also always shave right after a hot shower, meaning my pores are open and the air is humid.

The interplay between how so many things are available for personal taste, preference, and need versus the few things that absolutely do have to be done in it in a single correct way. Sharp, straight, control, gentle. But what you mix up on your face is up to you. I also really enjoyed the focus on attention and skill and presence instead of speed and convenience. How taken care of a tool properly enables its use for a very long time to come compared to throwaway culture. The presentation was fantastic, and that voice would be worth listening to for almost any content. That alone was worth look like and like and subscription

So if a beard directly helps with the job at hand, then yes. It used to be different a couple years ago tho, anyone that was in a spec ops could have a beard but the got rid of that rule because it "wasn't fair" but then again when does the US military care about whats fair? @@Zelmel Brett's Mormon, right? I've been reading AoM since the beginning, and, yeah, it's prevalent, he definitely doesn't deny it, but I don't think it gets in the way of any content. If anything it's like "Here's a thing, this is why it's important to me, maybe you can decide if it's important to you."

I've been shaving with a straight razor for some time now. My usual routine is to take a warm/hot bath to open the pores, then use water to lubricate the skin while shaving. Afterwards I'll use a light coat of mink oil to soothe any sore spots.

Wow! You are one fantastic teacher! And a sense of humour, too. I have a set of 5 straight razors in their original pouch, but as much as I tried I could not get the blade anywhere within 2" of my face. I would start to shake. Now I'm in my 70s, I don't shave at all since my barber died 10 years ago. The final exam for my old barber was to shave a peach without cutting it. Barbarsol was the only shaving cream for me way back when I shaved.

I started shaving with a straight razor like 2 months ago. Takes a bit longer but it’s fun and don’t have to keep buying expensive disposable razors. Great shave too!
