Around me, most of the state agency’s rear antennas are 34.6xx and front antennas are 34.7xx. Though that’s not 100% of time, it has been extremely helpful spotting the bogey and deciding which direction is being monitored. It’s also helpful at night in helping me know the moment I’ve passed the bogey, and if the new strongest signal is likely from the same vehicle or a different one. Somewhere around 33.758 are satellite dishes. Since I don’t have a lot of that around me, it’s helpful in identifying likely falses. We have a legitimate 34.802 antenna in the neighborhood, but 34.812 comes up once in a while. Before this video, I was blaming leaky detectors, but I may now start scanning for Teslas. Stalker is so prevalent around me that if another frequency pops up, I pretty much know which outlying agency to look for depending on where I’m at. It’s pretty helpful. An agency near me has a fairly active officer with K Band. When I see that gun’s particular frequency, I know it won’t be long until I spot who a couple of us lovingly named, K-Band Karen. Separating that frequency from the falses is essential in that jurisdiction.

I drive a Mazda CX-5, so i always run with frequencies on. Pro tip, if you have a mazda CX-5 and you are looking at the uniden r7 or the escort max 360, get the uniden. I have both, escort falses extremely often to the BSM as well as limited, but present Ka falses

This is an excellent video! Should be tagged in every instruction sheet when you buy a new one! This and they different bands. I'll be back up in Washington State from California in June. I can tell you Washington has more difference(s) than any other west coast state. Red light cameras, to all your different bands that you use it takes a good detector to "see" it all. My DS1 is incredible. Last time I left Seattle for California at 3:00 a.m. . Your state patrol sits in the dark in the middle of the freeway, or backed up into the bushes using radar in with their cars blacked out. Sneaky. My DS1 knocks him down every time. Oregon just a little bit less than Washington as far as what they use, or what to watch for. Ironically the CHP in California KA ban and that's it. Again a great video! Thanks.

100% useful to know the frequency. Like you talked about, you get used to determining if its a false or a real threat pretty quickly

Excellent video, extremely useful to know the specifics about the different bands. As an amateur radio operator I feel I had a little more insight to how the frequencies work, but everything explained was definitely simple and well thought out. Thanks :]

Yea i been using the frequency feature I have notes on my phone explaining what I captured during a certain number. Once i see that certain number pop up down the line, I’ll know exactly what it is. Door opener, speed camera, blind spots, real K band police gun, etc. depending on the number. 😅

Fantastic job of explaining this! To answer your question, yes I find frequencies extremely helpful, and find knowing the frequencies of every signal that is detected helpful as well. For example, seeing two k band signals together at 24.168 and 24.068 let's me know there's likely a BSM causing the alert.

Much needed video. I have been using frequency display, but it wouldn't tell me much until I know what signals are being used for police radar. So to know what frequencies to look for is the other puzzle piece that I think is needed to understand what you're seeing, and I don't know how anyone finds what's being used in any given area.

Yeah, the accurate frequency ID of the R3 was one of the main reasons I got it. Here officers use 24.150 (at least that is the design frequency) but the radars aren't usually very well calibrated so I always look for something between 24.080 to 24.190. If it's out of that range i just mute it. Thanks for the great videos!

Here in Finland I've only seen police use Stalker Ka radars, so ~34.7 only. They may use laser as well but it's quite rare.

Yes knowing the difference between frequencies is helpful. Its how I realized that semi trucks with adaptive Cruze will alert in the k band section of the frequencies. This is good tutorial on how important frequency information is nowadays. The thing fact that LEO radar equipment uses a wide variety of frequencies, makes it easier to make sense of what you'll see on a long road trip or a jaunt across town. Thanks for the explanations 😊

Great video! I picked up a v1g2 when they were first released. I've only used the app once to watch frequencies. In my daily 80 mile commute I go through 1-4 radar traps...i'll be using the app to monitor frequencies! I never thought of it as being this important to know. My area is heavily saturated with Ka traps and 1 in 50 lidar. Never had a K alert outside of a sign be an officer.

Like you mentioned. I use bogue counter and frequency to 'figure' out what the threat level is. Owning a Falcon HR 24.125 GHz is interesting. I haven't before, but I will definitely start noticing which freqs I come across with my R7. Thanks for the visual scale of those two bands, esp Ka and the freqs at which certain radar guns operate.

I run v1 driver along with waze on my vehicle’s radio through Bluetooth, so I hear the frequency but don’t know exactly where the LEOs range is in the frequency belt… or that each department may only use one frequency. So now I’ll definitely be on the look out for the difference in frequency use per department as I’m alerted. Thank you!

Appreciate the information, as aways! I have the same type of info on MRCD ranges, alerts, etc.

Displaying these frequencies and learning what they mean goes a long way when deciphering between real and false threats. For what it's worth, east TN still uses a good deal of K band. I find that the lower 24 range is common among MRCD red light cameras and LEO'S running K band. Usually something like ~24.083 for MRCD and ~24.067 for K band guns. This is why I can't shut off K where I live. I do shut off MRCD so I can lock out certain red light cameras. Not sure if you've discussed this option if you only deal with RLC where you live but it's worth noting.

All good points and I find the frequency display useful to determine if its a legit alert or BSM or a speed sign on the side of the road. Also if you see the same frequency each time you go past a certain spot you can be sure its a false alert and mute it out on the detector.

I'm going to start watching what the frequency is. I can see where it would be helpful to know what department is using a certain frequency.

I always thought the frequencies were absurd. Now, after watching this I have a great deal of knowledge about frequencies. I think I will take a photo of frequencies to get a better idea of what to expect. I read on another link you provided in the state they only use 2/5/8 and bands, but I was too scared to turn off the bands. After monitoring the frequencies, I will definitely remove the other bands not in use.

Thanks for the great video and explanation! I use frequency info similar to how you do - Had no idea 24.124 might actually be legit radar. I've had that frequency blocked for a long time due to the CX5's you mentioned.

This has been very informative and I have come to the conclusion that (owning a CX-5) I'm not ready to deal with radar detectors and all of their false alerts.

That's one reason I love jbv1.

I use it more so just for knowing the time to start to slow down. Especially with my R7 as I know its much better at 34.7 than 35.5 if I see a 35 signal even if it is a weaker one to start to slow down. If its a 34.7 weak signal I know I probably have time to slow down.

Great breakdown Vortex, I have been waiting for a better vocused video on the various frequencies used as often you speak of that in other episodes that aren't specific to this. I like knowing what freq. the various radar guns are using, how the police tend to use those various guns and what othere systems are known to ride on that same freq. I had a MUCH older metal grey die-cast aluminum body Uniden back around 2000. It would false Laser when I got near our local Doppler radar. I don't think my R3 has ever done that...hmm? Anyways, I know the R3 is at it's limit as far as on board memory for the programmers to adapt further. I have wished they would try this one technique of perhaps adding an user lockout for just simply a displayed number. So let's say using on board filtering involves a LOT of programming work (and hardware), what if resolving the 24.160, 24.167 and 24.168 was as simple as the MCU knowing it is about to send an alert and it knows that alert is at those frequencies (because the display is indicating such) and allowing the user to turn on a self mute for at least those super sommon frequencies. I know Uniden would probably have to leave out the seperate user mute for the 24.124 because of this memory limit (I would assume have that also display mute selected on it's own would add more lines of programming) but just having the radar detector know it is about to display 24.160, 24.167 or 24.168 and have that self mute would be the best thing to happen to the Uniden R lineup. Consider it simply a "Display Mute", it will only mute if it knows it's going to display that number....no further filtering, no further hardware. I feel like it would take a lot less lines of programming to add such a feature rather than using the sensing and frequency counters on board the MCU of the detector. If you still have a contact at Uniden, please forward this comment. I hope you understand my ideal here! As the price I paid and how good this R3 already works I cannot afford to upgrade to the R8 or even Thea when it comes out. Cheers and thanks for a very well written and informative video. If only we can get more unterviews with officers who use specific guns or know better the ways they would use each brand of gun, that would also be very informative. Things such as this "xx" gun doesn't like dark or rainy days, or this "xx" gun doesn't work well on blind spot cars or near power lines? Thanks so much for this! Having just picked up my r7, this is handy. I was wondering, does power matter? So in regards to the CX5(etc) I’d imagine those are fairly weak signals- so it would show up pretty late with a strong signal. Is that accurate? Would it also be fair to say that enforcement uses a stronger system so you might get a weaker alert earlier. Let me know if I’m on track here.

What kind of modulation do BSM and radar guns have or use? And which detectors can detect those modulations?

Nice video. With some of the information you put through a few videos, I made a recent purchase of a uniden R3. It's basic , is somewhat stealthy with some precautions. But question is the following: I know from what you said in this video, changing the antenna will change the frequency for transmitting with a radar unit , in this case for example, ka band? In other words the frequency changed with what the antenna tuned to, but it is not at the transmitter unit itself is that correct?

Don’t know much about this, but can knowing the frequency help you tell if a radar gun is out of calibration?

When I was 16, I just slapped a cobra up on the dash and called it good Only “false” I got back then were automatic doors in town 25 years later and I’m running the Uniden R8 and having to watch 50 videos to understand how to most optimally use this thing 😂

haha a lot has changed in 25 years of tech and yeah there’s so many more radar transmitters in operation today than there were in the 90’s. :)

Escort MaxCam 360 falses 35 598 always with 1 bar and forward. Randomly (never in the same area, and often no cars or buildings near by)

Wasnt Radenso's Thiea long promised RD to sort all this out for the end user?

We’ll done… My previous Escort detector was false alarming so many times in Ka and I found it was the BSM on my 2018 Subaru Outback that uses Ka causing my detector to false. My new Redline unit has done away with this. I don’t believe I’ve received any false warnings on this unit.

Off topic but which stealth RD has the 'best' app? My location requires I hide my RD so running via an app is very beneficial. Great episode Ariel (as usual). I see these gun frequencies listed online but nice coming from a trusted source.👍

The answer to that question depends on the Radar Detector you're using or plan to get. I'm using a V1G2 and supplement the detector with the JBV1 app on my Android phone (this app isn't available for Apple phones). It's an awesome combination and gives me so much control and information that I feel naked if driving without the detector on AND the app running. Highly recommend combination if you have or plan to get a V1G2 detector.

@@El_Diablo_LI Using an R3. Had a full Stinger system and wasn't very impressed for the price. Here in Au we have to import RD's as they're illegal and Spectre is big here. Stealthy RD's are few and far between. Been wanting to upgrade for a while now but waiting for that 'great leap forwards'. I'm leaning towards a V1G2.

I asked a question on another one of your videos and I thought this would be a great follow up place for it. I'm getting constant KA band alerts every day and I watched the frequency today. They are all 33.479 and if I'm understanding correctly this is not used by police. Is it possible to turn off this frequency on the Escort Redline 360c and would you suggest that in this case?

Sure you could disable that segment 1 scan. It’s probably a satellite dish or something.

I have a 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Limited. Do you know if I’ll have any radar detector interference from that? It has eyesight, blind spot detectors, and a backup collision avoidance system. I can’t find the specs so just wondering if you knew.

If you’re in CA, you can shut off X and K band and run it in Ka only. It’s still a great detector. Filtering is bad, but you won’t need that with K band disabled.

So are the three threat ranges you gave for Ka-band ALL the potential threat bands, or are there others on Ka? I don't want to start shutting off others if there is a potential Ka gun range not mentioned.

I recently got a new iPhone 13max and been noticing a lot of laser faults on my Max 360c. I noticed in the diagram of the phone camera it has a LIDAR antenna. Any coincidence?

Yeah the face sensor for FaceID can cause laser falses. Try moving the phone or detector and see if it fixes it.

I have the Max 2 and just use the bands, x, k, ka. Even if it had frequencies, I wouldn't use it. I just like to keep it simple.

Are we officially past the point of new cars no longer using K band for BSM?

35.5 around me means it’s the county sheriff and they don’t fuck around. Everybody else is running 34.7 and very rarely 33.8 is used by our city cops

Will the R9 be able to tell you how many frequencies it’s picking up? And should I wait for the R9 since it’s supposed to have built in laser jammer?

Recently drove from Pennsylvania to Florida using the V1 gen2 along with JBV1. I was getting a ton of 33.711 signals. This is while on the freeway. Any ideas? Is this a frequency I can just segment out? I also seem to get a lot of laser falses and I believe it's from sunlight. I hate to just turn off laser as I did see one or two police officers using laser on my journey. Fortunately waze marked almost all of the police officers.

Interesting. Usually that freq range is from nearby leaky / cheapy / poorly designed, but the V1 Gen2 also gets its own share of Ka falses regardless. 33.8’ish is where MPH guns transmit as discussed in the video so it’d be unwise to try and segment it out.

Yeah definitely be careful with segmentation. That’s also an advanced feature and when used incorrectly, you can shut off detection of legitimate police radar. It’s great that you’re researching the topic first. :)

Hi there Vortex, do you know how common it is for police to use RDDs in states where it’s legal. I’m in NY, I purchased the uniden R7 and your video on its stealth was proof you can’t rely on it. Will I still be targeted, is this something I should bother worrying about. The whole idea is to avoid police not give them something to perk their ears up. Your feedback is highly valued, take care.

How many different brand radar guns are? Are the ones you mentioned 99% of what you see on the road?

The four I mentioned are the only four brands I see these days for traditional radar. There’s lots of others for photo radar though.

G’day from Australia, Great vid. Im curious tho, you’ve mentioned the ability to turn on and off some of the KA bands based on frequencies commonly used by coppers etc, however I can’t see the freq. range on the selection. It’s just numbers (1, 2, 3 etc) how the heck do I know what which number correspond to what freq range?!? There is nothing on the user’s manual. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤔🤔 I am just a user, def not a savvy tech guy.

@@VortexRadar but great cars. I have a 2017 mazda 6 and my wife has a 2016 CX5 without the collision avoidance. Never had an issue. as you mention in your video, i look for the CX5 when the detector goes. you either slow down or pass him. LOL.

Oh I love me some Mazdas! I would have definitely considered trading my MX-5 to a CX-5 for the fun driving experience had it not been for the K band issues. :)

So how do you get over the thought that if you start shutting down frequency bands you could be missing a change in new use of a frequency. Wouldn't you rather have a false alert that makes you slow down for a little bit then get a ticket to find out that you shut down a frequency that was used by that particular department? That is also to ask if these only worshiped, with the current range the gun manufacturers have, would you still buy the detector? Wouldn't you think that was limiting? So I'm trying to understand shutting off frequencies and how you get comfortable with taking that chance?

If you’re concerned, just have your detector scan everything and accept the performance hit to your detector. Turning off frequencies is an advanced feature. Police radar guns are only designed to transmit on certain sections of Ka and so you can turn off unneeded frequency ranges to get faster response time for your detector and a little better range. It’s all a balance. You can always scan a little wider range if you like, particularly in areas where police radar guns are known to drift in frequency more. If you’re concerned about the risks though, just have it scan everything and don’t worry about trying to get every last ounce of performance out of your detector.

Wouldnt all the BSM noise interfere with radar guns in the same band?

How about an uodato the "Creating a simple reference for where bands can be turned on and off" site.... and for those with "rare use" put a star in those areas. P.s. so far with my R8 I haven't found any law enforcement using anything but ka. Eastern ks (Oklahoma boarder to kc (non-turnpike) and western Missouri Kansas city area. I have found the traffic lights in Merriam ks using k band (knew before but didn't know where there till I could see the frequencies) Also, the R8 isn't falsing on the traffic speed fixed laser (some roads and multiple lights not speed enforcement)

That’s sorta what the now defunct RDFGS was aiming for, but that hasn’t been updated in years. A simple reference would require the collaborative effort of hundreds of people. We need someone to take the initiative to restart the project.

If automotive radar sensors use the K band frequencies between 24.05 and 24.25GHz why not just block those in every radar unit? Wouldn't that eliminate most of noise.

Oh I don't even remember anymore. I think there were some videos where I had some issues with trolls so I disabled comments for a bit to avoid unwanted headache, but I don't remember the details anymore.

What would be interesting would be a radar detector not only tell us the FQZ of the radar gun but the radar gun being used....
