Understanding Pica--the Urge to Eat Clay, Starch, Ice, and Chalk

The urge to eat clay, starch, ice and chalk has been a phenomenon among humans, particularly women, for a very long time. Nutritional scientist Sera Young discussed her new book, 'Craving Earth: Understanding Pica--the Urge to Eat Clay, Starch, Ice, and Chalk,' November 3, 2011 as part of Mann Library's Chats in the Stacks series.

When I was in highschool, some of my friends ate dirt and clay, however I wasn't interested in it and didn't crave it or give it a second thought. The story changed in my first year of university where I just started craving it out of nowhere. Other animals that eat it that I noticed are the free range chickens we kept at home and turkeys too. When you let them out of their cage they just start chomping on some grass and dirt, even after being fed

Tldr eating clay may be an adaptive response to micronutrient deficiency, or maybe toxins and pathogens. You probably guessed the deficiency thing. 28:12 The idea that small particles mixing with the mucus membrane could filter larger particles or pathogens doesn't justify the redundant examples.

You could also have a parasite that's making you crave dirt so you get reinfected again
