Understanding Outsider Art and the Search for Authentic Creations

When most people think of the popular works from the art world, they usually ridicule it and say, THIS IS NOT ART. These conceptual creations were made to challenge and deconstruct societies expectations of what art is in line with emerging postmodern thought. But what if you wanted to look at art to see the innate creative urge that has existed alongside humanities development from the earliest years to the present day? Then you need to move your gaze from this over the conceptualised sector. Instead, begin to appreciate the work of other artists, such as outsider artists, who tend to create intense and bizarre visionary compositions.
So, what is outsider art? Watch to find out!

The thing I like about Outsider Art is that there aren't any specific rules to it. It is like the punk music movement of the 1970s, they didn't have to be master musicians, but just get on the stage and perform, if it worked then it worked. All that is needed for Outsider Art is to create, nothing more, if it works then it works regardless of the skill of the artist. I even find it liberating to hear something like "my five year old can do that," which means anyone can do it provided they have the will to do so. I even believe Outsider Art will save us from the restrains that so-called A.I. art imposes on us. It's originality and color in a manner not found in regular will enhance and save us from artificial and mechanical styles.

yes and no. artificial and mechanical styles is reflection of tools used. in 1980s a lot out sider art was lo fi because of tech. alot of my music quantized to hell. though my early vocaloid songs would fall under outsider art because I did not know much music theory. now with modern tech you have AI vocal synths which different form AI art generators which are not tools.

I paint but I've had people ask me if I do folk art or modern art or even primitive art . I don't think it matters I try many different things and have for a long time . I do however feel that " outsider art " does have some distinct aspects that appear less often in other forms people might associate with outsider art . simply put the outsider artist might often not know ( or care ) about the merest aspects of art from influence to academic concepts . Remember even grandma Moses was inspired to reinterpret the prints of Currier and Ives in her earliest works .

This is a wonderful topic. I've explored a few outsider-art museums and was surprised and impressed many years ago by the Baltimore OA museum (in the harbor area, for those who might visit). What struck me as well was the respect and investment shown to the establishment and "curating" of pieces, if that classical term fits. Lisa, would it be possible to slow down the narration just a tad? Thanks for this work. Are you writing a thesis or just enjoying a studious life?

Hey, thanks for commenting. I am officially a doctoral candidate as of last week! I'm still figuring out how to make an engaging video so I appreciate the advice. Also, I have a published article on this topic if you're interested: cgscholar.com/bookstore/works/reenvisioning-outsider-art?category_id=cgrn&path=cgrn%2F410%2F184

I saw a documentary on outsider art a while back . Some people complained about the designation " outsider art "being too narrow others griped that it was too broad . Ironically one husband and wife who as gallery owners specialized in buying and selling outsider art complained that people tried to pass off " fakes " on them , whatever that may be .
