Understanding Makoto Konno | The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006) | Character Analysis

Ойын-сауық

In 2006 Mamoru Hosoda technically released his third feature film after The Digimon movie and One Piece, called The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.
The film follows Makoto Konno, a student that unexpectedly finds herself having the ability to leap back in time.
After her bicycle malfunctions and she hurdles towards an on-coming train, Makoto somehow travels back in time to where this accident does not take place.
From there Makoto uses her abilities to travel back in time nonchalantly, she uses it to get good grades, to enjoy more free time, and to avoid difficult questions.
But unaware to her is that there is a limit to how many times she can go back and the first day she gained this ability becomes the last day for her to use it.
And what ensues is her friend Kousuke uses that same bike that was broken and hurdles down towards that same on-coming train that was meant to hit Makoto.
Killing him. Leaving Makoto distraught.
But luckily for her, there is another user who can travel through time, another friend Chiaki.
He goes back in time and stops that accident from happening. But that leaves him stranded in a time that he isn’t supposed to be in.
However, Makoto figures out how to get everything back to normal and says goodbye to Chiaki as he goes back to his time and the movie ends.
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time has one clear question.
What would you do if you could go back in time?

this is by far my favorite movie. i still go back to watch it, cry with makoto and go through the same emotions as i did the first time i watched. the movie came to me at a time in life where i too desperately wanted to change the past, to make better memories and the girl who leapt through time was comforting in a way i didnt knew it would. thank you for this amazing video and the great analysis ❤️

I have to say the film turned out to be deeper than I expected and deeper than I had initially interpreted on my viewing. The film is crazy deep and poignant. Have to add, that Makuto's Aunt is surely herself (Makuta talking to herself, somehow, whether symbolically or actually). Thinking about it, as I am now, the ending is about optimism and hope, even if the love she had found is never ever realised, echoed by her Aunt's reflection of her one love from Senior High Days. Her Aunt's description could be argued to be identical to Makuto's. Her Aunt concludes, 'But Makoto, you're different. You're nothing like me, at all, are you. If a boy is late, in meeting up with you, you're the type to go look for him, aren't you.' It leads me to believe that that is indeed Makoto somehow meant to be talking to herself, persuading her not to wait or be passive to make the effort herself, to seek out and find. Later, when Chiaki tells her, 'I will be waiting for you.', she responds, 'OK, I won't be long. I'll come running.' When this is considered alongside her 'Aunt's' words of her own, 'He promised to come back for me. I wasn't planning to wait for him but...anyway, so many years have passed now. It didn't seem very long. Time flew by fast. But Makuto, your different...'. Is as if she, Makoto, (as her own Aunt) is telling herself, not to make that mistake again. She (as her Aunt) appears to be single, alone. She is telling herself that she should not allow that happen (again). 'You're nothing like me at all, are you', her Aunt says. But that's just it, they are one and the same. She is instructing herself in the most profound way, you can also be different or do things in a different way. Whether it is Chiaki or someone else, make sure not to make the mistake. I think the film ends with Makoto feeling a sense of optimism and hope, that it is in her hands (to a degree). For many of the viewers of the film, though, it concludes on such a poignant note as to leave the heart and soul wanting to know there was some kind positive outcome. Once again, the film is so much deeper than I had come to expect and deeper still than I had initially thought after first viewing. It is only after watching and thinking and reading, that I understand it like this, knowing also that it is only my own interpretation of events.

@@filmisjustmovingpicturesand I don't like it a bit, when chiaki is a twist. so he really is someone from the future huh.. I prefer a little magical spice, like "Mirai". a mysterious garden or park or an unknown world is colliding haha.. actually, I just finished all of Mamoru Hosoda's films. and he really is still the same person, hasn't changed at all until now. except for his experimental work as an episode director in an anime TV series, I forget the title

@@AbahDirgaLv997 "How chiaki know his friend kousuke use bike makoto ? And he know makoto bike the brakes are broken." ---> At around 1 hour and 10 minutes and 7 seconds, Chiaki explains: "You don't remember, but Kousuke and that girl died once at that crossing. A certain someone was crying with guilt so I had no choice." So he already experienced that, which is why he went back in time. You know, just like how Makoto experienced making tempura and then having an accident, and then going back in time to switch that accident to someone else, or spending 10 hours in Karaoke. We may not have seen Chiaki's perspective but that explanation is enough to know what's going on. It's just a matter of whether or not we understand time travel that much. And also whether we remember details. Like for your "And he know makoto bike the brakes are broken." question, in 58 minutes and 48 seconds, Makoto gets a message from Kousuke saying "I'm borrowing your bike." He's using her bike to give Kaho a ride home. The same bike that she used to experience the same accident Makoto had in the beginning. So yeah, it's about remembering the details and how time goes back, and that 2 different people that can go back in time can have different time leaps. Anyways, I hope you understand. I've also watched The Girl Who Leapt Through Time just before watching this review and also got confused a bit at times. But sorting the information together, it all makes sense. Though yeah, I now got an itch to re-watch Steins;Gate. Another time travel show that's amazing. I recommend it. Anyways, have fun watching anime.

it’s also about the power of love (for someone or something, like a painting). Time waits no one, and what makes it relevant are our passions. Better challenge ourselves in the pursuit of living them fully instead of regretting afterwards (like the lonely aunt)

But I've thought about your questions and here's some theories but take them with the smallest pinch of salt because I could be remembering the movie wrong... First question...maybe that's just a romantic gesture that has no real possibility but it's a nice way to end things with Makoto Second question: I think his future is in a war (future trunks style)...and so that painting is a time of peace... A place where he can be safe again...(could be chatting absolute rubbish here) Third question: the aunt has also experienced a similar thing that Makato has gone through so is more understanding Again... probably wrong on all three

it’s all about the viewers perception in the end but i can help you out. 1. chiaki comes from the future and from my knowledge they never see each other again or if they do makoto would be very old 2. the painting just has a deep meaning to chiaki i mean if u we’re able to time travel to see something that is not possible in the present wouldn’t you? 3. there’s a manga about auntie witch where she fell in love with a guy who also time travelled, hence why she believed makoto.
