Understanding Invisible Oil Patterns on Bowling Lanes

Спорт

The invisible oil on bowling lanes is the hidden challenge that every bowler faces. It is our job as bowlers to paint a picture in our heads of how our ball is suppose to navigate through the oil in order to throw strikes consistently.

I like what Brad said from 1:50 to 2:20, but one thing that every bowler should pay attention to is VOLUME. Length doesn't mean anything anymore because of ball technology. If a 52' pattern only has 14mL of oil , you can play the gutter. Sure you'll need to break the oil down a little bit, but if you get an aggressive ball with lots of surface that oil is gone by the 5th frame of the first game guaranteed. The reverse is also true: If you are faced with a 35' pattern with 40mL of oil, get ready to go all the way inside, stay aggressive, and loft the gutter cap if necessary. Volume is everything when it comes to oil patterns. Unless it's 80' I guess lol

Sorry for my ignorance...when you throw different lines, what determines your starting spot with your feet. I’m a new bowler and would love to know a rule of thumb on where to start for the 5 arrow, where to start for the 15 and then the 23 as you did in this video. I’ve always started on the same spot and moved arrows to find the pocket... seems there should be a better strategy

  • @AlterSchwedeWieGeil

It's a little different for everybody. First you have to walk consistently. If your starting on the same board every time but finish on a different each time you should work on a consistent approach first. Once you've settled that one in experiment a little o. Where to stand and where to look to hit certain targets(you should be looking for a target at around 40ft). You should be using a plasticball that doesn't hook for this. That's because Reactive balls will skid differently on different patterns and therefore might corrupt what your seeing. You should have a couple of base setups for where to play the lane. I have 3 base setups for 3 different basic lines(8 to 5 / 18 to 7 and 32 to 9) From there I usually make 2 and 1 or 1 and 1 moves. The first number tells how far I move my feet and the seconds how far I move my eyes. I use 2 and 1 to keep the breakpoint the same and 1and1 to move the breakpoint. The 1 and 1 should work for every player. It moves the whole line by a board. The move you have to make to keep the breakpoint the same and alternate the laydown can be different for each player. However most of the bowlers make either 3and1 or 2and1

Most everyone in the tour will use if there right handed the second arrow 10 board to figure out there strategies for handling the surface there bowling where it be a 35 ft oil pattern or a 45 ft oil pattern eventually that ball will either start out over the 10 board and move out to between that mark and the 1 or 2 board or anywhere in between all they they do is adjust left or right on approach

Where your sliding foot should land +7 boards on your intended release point. Right handed players slide foot is about 7 boards left of your release point, vice versa for leftys. 7 is a rule of thumb, but depending on your body size (skinny/wide) it could be 5 or 8 boards. Some times you can't use the same ball on all of your lines tries because you may need a different ball for the pattern. That's why being a professional is beneficial because your sponcer (if you have one) sends you balls till they come out of your ears to drill to any pattern you encounter.

Hi B&K, My strategy is that instead of moving in, I use a weaker ball and even go down to the weakest for extremely dry lane conditions but keeping my same board to stand and same target...also combine a bit of more speed...also incase needed, I stop the axis tilt and go in for a forward roll rather than side rolling but I do keep the same board for standing and also the target arrow/board. I feel for 'myself only' that more I come in, the worst I do is stretching my hand out and many a times the ball doesnt come in leaving 1-2-4 -10 split! I am RH and 90% of my shots are skid-snap rather than inside-out. Let me know if my strategy is correct. If any correction is needed then please do suggest. Can you please suggest some balls 'each' for heavy oil/medium oil/dry oil based on only 'skid-snap' style which is that I need balls with 'backend' but NOT of traction/continous? Thanks.

Asking people how to bowl on specific patterns sounds like a good idea, but once you realize that the lane type, lane topology, oil type, oil machine, lane temperature, ball temperature, etc etc all make such a difference on how the lane will play you realize the question isn't really going to be helpful.

People tend to use what they call their benchmark ball for test shots, and move on from there with there more extreme layouts/surfaces depending. So id venture to say more your medium ball in your arsenal, if you go to either extreme as a test, you have to make more ball changes if you start out with the wrong one.

For me this tends to be my medium aggression ball that kinda reads the mid lane well also. If it goes too long it doesnt tell me much about the pattern earlier, and if i use a ball that rolls too early it tells me less about the oil through the mid lane and end of the pattern.

I try 3 or 4 different places in practice as well. Say if I had done the same 3 places and got the same results that 15 works best but then I see everyone else jump on 15. I will go grab a weaker ball and then go back to the 5 or the 10 that hit to strong and see if I can make that work. If you can get on a line that no one else is on or very few then it will not transition as fast. Like wise I pay attention as the game goes on and if more people start going to my line as their line transitions I often keep my weaker ball and go back to wear they was at say 15 but since they are no longer their and even though they burned the lane on 15 my weaker ball may still be in play there. If not I can step up a ball. I almost always start with my strong ball if I can but I like to throw 3 different balls in practice so I have a idea what ball I want to go to next. There is for sure a lot of strategy and mental game that goes into bowling. And Having a 3 ball arsenals minimum is a must. Not including a spare ball. My strong ball I can throw it then go to ball number, 2 and step right 2 boards and it will land the same spot then my weaker ball I move right another 3 boards and it will finish in the same spot. Havin a arsenals and understanding the difference in how they roll is a must.. I also have a few more balls that fit in between those because I always bring 6 minimum.. No pro is going to bowl with one ball up the 10 board all 3 games but yet I see league bowlers try and do it all the time. They start out good the first few frames but don't move or change balls and follow the transition, and all night their ball goes further left every ball until they are all on Brooklyn. You have to understand lane condition and have a arsenal to match up with the condition. Bowling a sport shot league is the best way to learn to follow transition. Trying to figure the lanes out is what makes it fun.

Can U please tell me how you're adjusting where you're standing when you're adjusting where you are throwing? I've just started taking lessons & bought a reactive ball. What confuses me is if you need the oil, why do you start on 5 which is usually dry to hook onto more friction at the end of the lane? I really need this explained in very simple terms to try to understand this.

Since this hasn't been answered, I'll take a stab at it. I think he is lining his feet to the breakpoint with the target spot in line with the two.

Question. When I go to my local bowling alley or different bowling alleys in my area, I’m just an every day guy nice serious Bowler but I want to start bowling more regularly not for championships nor leagues just enough so I can be better and beat my family and friends. There’s no such thing as a free game you pay either by the hour or by the game. How are you supposed to know that if that’s how most bowling alleys work? Heck even the guy said every Lainez different how about maybe every bowling alley is different? Can you guys expand upon that please?

As someone who is attending his first PBA regional tournament this weekend who is close to the level that Brad and Kyle are at, I can tell you that it all starts with bowling at and winning local tournaments. PBA has regional tournaments and it has national tournaments and the national bowlers always get their start by performing well at regional tournaments. Brad and Kyle were on the PBA regional tour when they started this channel I believe.

1:45 Why does every pro bowler seem to blow into their thumb holes? I just can't understand why they do this? I've bowled in leagues for over 30+ years and I never see any other bowler do this. Even the ones that are very good bowlers with 200+ averages including myself. But for some reason.. almost EVERY LAST PRO does this with their ball.

I like that idea of going up 5. Although, It would've been neat to see a different pattern on the other lane, say a 42-45ft flat, heavy volume, to kinda show the difference. Like if the ball doesn't come back from 5, it just stays straight!!
