Understanding How To Install Mac Apps Downloaded From Web Sites

Ғылым және технология

macmost.com/e-2170 Often when you download apps from third-party web sites you are given a disk image and need to do a drag-and-drop install of the app. New Mac users are sometimes not sure how this works and may not know what to do with the disk image or try to run the app while it is still in the disk image. Learn how to get the app into your Application folder and then run it from Launchpad, Spotlight or the Dock.

    Seeing is believing. Using Mac PC after Windows seemed so different. My tendency is to be visceral. When it comes to learning I tend to go with someone that fits my learning needs. Guitar, flight sims, camera, etc. My first impression of your videos has all the check boxes checked. I didn't feel dumbed down because you spoke clearly and precise. Some tutorials have blaring music in the presentation and shaky video, blurry images or I can't understand every other word due to their tone or lack of pronunciation. Great smile reinforced the nice positive mentor position. I've subscribed and look forward to your next or past instructional tutorials. Tony from San Antonio, Texas.

They seem to design for people who respond well to an intuitive interface, but those of us who have a more literal mind need more explicit instructions a lot of the time.

    I like to keep the disk image files around for a while. I have plenty of disk space. The reason? Sometimes there is an app update I don't like. Like recently thee was an update to my preferred browser which disabled some functionality. So I uninstalled the update and reinstalled the app from the dmg. I then keep an eye on future updates to see if my issue gets fixed. It's sort of old fashioned thinking, but I find that it works if something gets changed too much.

    For a platform that prides itself on the philosophy of "It just works", this is a very cumbersome way of installing applications.

  • @macmost

    @macmost

    3 жыл бұрын

    Apple provides a very easy "it just works" way of installing apps: The Mac App Store. But if developers want to no use it, then they can do what they want. What you are suggesting is that Apple forces all developers to use the Mac App Store, or perhaps be forced into using a specific way of installing. That's fine if you want that, but note that others do not want that at all.

  • @GroudFrank

    @GroudFrank

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@macmost Sir, I wasn't suggesting anything of the sort. I understand some of you feel the need to religiously defend your platform and proselytize for it but I didn't come here to attack you or Apple. I simply made an observation, one I have heard even dedicated Mac users make. Fact remains that it is unintuitive. .exe, .deb, .rpm all provide one click solutions for app installation despite the fact that there is a Windows store and countless app stores/installers on Linux. Even flatpak and snaps installs are more intuitive than this. It is unintuitive, period. Your video did help though so thanks 👍

    Perhaps I’m misunderstanding your original comment. Installers can be built just like I imagine they can be built for Windows apps. It is completely up to the developer. Apple doesn’t force them to do it any particular way.

    How come there is no disk image for all applications. For example, when I downloaded IntelliJ, I had to drag it into the application folder to install since it was a disk image. However, when i downloaded VisualStudio Code, it downloaded a zip file. When I opened it, a message popped up that the file was being expanded and then as soon as the message went away, a new visual studio program pops up in my downloads. I know it is installed because it shows up under my applications folder so my mac recognizes that it is an application. How is this possible without me having to drag it into the application folder to install it?

    Great instructions for explaining the concepts of installing software on a Mac! ... When it comes to uninstalling an app, I use AppCleaner. Drag the app from the Applications folder to AppCleaner (available for free), and it will examine the app files as well as the associated user data that probably would NOT be deleted during uninstall ... Another thing that has confused me in the past is when software cannot be installed because the author/developer can't be verified. I keep forgetting the ability to approve installation is in the Mac's Security settings.

    Clean My Mac is not from Apple, it's from MacPaw. It's not a bad app, but it doesn't really do anything you can't do in macOS if you learn how. I use it on my everyday machine but I wouldn't use it on a machine that had critical work on it. If you want to uninstall CleanMyMac it will do it itself. Use the inbuilt uninstaller in the app, and just click the checkbox for CMM. No, I'm not Gary.

And then still have to unmount the image.. I can't believe they have not fixed this method after all these years..
