Understanding how Benzodiazepines (eg valium, xanax) can make anxiety worse with regular use.

Commonly taking benzodiazepines can result in rebound anxiety and the regular use of benzodiazepines can lead to tolerance and withdrawal anxiety. So regular use is a problem and many people can end up stuck on them and have difficulties stopping them. When they try and stop anxiety is severe, but in large part that could be the effect of the rebound anxiety / withdrawal.
The mechanism behind this is neuroadaptation. The brain makes more (GABA A) receptors to compensate for the effect of these drugs on the receptor. Hence tolerance occurs as does rebound anxiety when regular use is suddenly stopped.
Some common Benzodiazepines mentioned are:
Valium (diazepam)
Xanax (alprazolam)
Temaze (temazepam)

Once my withdrawal nightmare started we kept upping the dose until I was on 1mg Klonopin 3x a day. It would work for a couple weeks and then I’d feel worse than before. I never had such bad anxiety in my life. The depersonalization was crippling and had to take time off work while I tapered. I’m 3months off of Klonopin and just got a “wave” the other day. It’s not nearly as intense as when I was tapering but it’s still debilitating and terrifying. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone and I pray that all of those going through this recover to enjoy their life. I’m a 250 man and this has brought me to my knees begging god to heal me. Anyways great video and thank you for the information.

I pray you get back up stronger with the help of God who will bless you, I had similar problems and can relate and what will help you dramatically is to find God’s grace, the truth in life which is in the ORTHODOX christianity religion only. it is the original and true form of christianity that Jesus taught us when he came to earth, and you can feel God's grace through the holy sacraments after baptism, repentance- confession and holy communion in the orthodox christian church, something that completely changes your life and turns you into a happier person with a meaningful life and also saves you by strengthening your bond with God. I suggest you become an orthodox christian at an orthodox christian church near you, get baptised and receive the holy spirit and live a spiritual life (repentance- confession to the priest and holy communion) This is all God wants from us and through these sacraments we will be saved from anxiety in this life and the next💯

Anxiety and panic attacks are hard-wired in some people. CBT therapy can help some. Tranquilizers have helped people get relief. Those that don’t suffer from severe anxiety have a difficult time understanding. We need more education and help for this problem. Don’t just throw them under the bus. During the lockdown so many started drinking more for relief. I was advised to take anti depressants for anxiety but the side-effects are terrible especially the nausea and stomach pain. Come to find out studies have shown at 30% have this reaction. Plus they make you have numb feelings and no libido. Seratonin is mostly produced in the gut. Doctors need to help their patients learn skills in order to manage this health issue instead of only giving out drugs.

I've been 'benzos' as needed for 5+ years and the dosage has not gone up a single time. I have NEVER experienced anything akin to what you describe in this video. I NEVER exceed my monthly allotment and I sure as heck don't use it every day. It is as needed ONLY. Not for if I need to sleep, not if I'm bored, not if I'm overly sad. It is ONLY for when I am either edging on or if I am in the /middle/ of a panic attack. I've been on these for over five years and each year gets better than the last (and I use Less of these medications) because of these medications. Maybe it's because I was taught this "skills before pills" logic, I don't know, all I know is that benzos have a place. Is it inevitable that you will have that rebound or does one-time use sometimes give a reset in which your brain is reminded of this non-anxious state and is able to better cope? Also, does taking the supplement GABA or Theanine have a rebound effect?

  • @thePSYCHcollective

    @thePSYCHcollective

    2 жыл бұрын

Theoretically there’s always a rebound with compounds (like Benzos) that interact with GABA receptors in the brain. But with occasional use, the impact of the provoking stressor resolving is much greater than the impact of the rebound. With regard to oral GABA or oral Theanine it’s not clear to the extent that these compounds act directly or indirectly on GABA receptors. There’s debate as to whether these supplements make it into the brain or of their effect occurs elsewhere. If they exert their putative effect by interacting with GABA receptors in the brain, then they should cause rebound. But they may have other mechanisms- it’s not clear.

I haven't increased the dosage, but two days turned to three ...four....and suddenly anxiety began to creep it's way in every day. I'm currently in the process of trying to get away with halfing the dose, which I'm able to do sucessfully some of the time(I don't know why)...but other days(most) the anxiety requires the full 2 pills or I feel like I'm losing my mind.

I like how the current benzo rhetoric is to generalize the experiences of people who shouldn’t be on benzos as the experience everyone will have. The group of people who benefit and should be on benzos are now erased and stigmatized as drug seeking and addicts. Like it’s also no one’s fault but prescribers, and they’re now normalizing shifting the blame onto the mediation and patients so they don’t have to take accountability. It’s so fuckin unethical and abusive.

Some people do a kind of sedative rotation: Benzos then “antipsychotics” then clonidine etc. it’s all rough on the system and may mean one can’t feel engaged with life. A better approach would be to learn some ways of reducing ones sensitivity and becoming expert in anxiety modulating skills. Not easy, but might be preferable to constant states of sedation. We’ve got other clips and sensitivity and anxiety modulation and a booklet on our website which has some helpful resources. But it all takes work, so working with a psychologist to develop these skills might be necessary. Using meds as a temporary scaffold is reasonable. But long term sedation is not ideal.

The problem with benzos is people use them to AVOID the anxiety. The more you avoid anxiety, the worse it gets. You need to learn how to face and accept the anxiety and let it run it's course. The teachings of Claire Weekes have helped many people completely recover from anxiety problems. It's not easy, but it's much better in the long run. If you are already on these drugs, NEVER stop cold turkey. Always taper off slowly at the advice of a medical professional.

Also, they'll work because that's often the last resort people get to. Resources and services are nothing but hoops and hoops to jump through and you have to live in the county where you get these services, so someone living in SF can't go across the bridge into Alameda County for different services. After 2 years of me dealing with things as best I could and trying to jump through some of these hoops, I just asked my doctor to medicate me, and that did the trick. Long answer short: you want people to get of benzos, make therapy much more readily available and cheap. Talking it out vs. taking a pill? The choice is obvious to me.

It sounds like a difficult predicament. I’m not familiar with the medication you are taking. I understand it’s a combination of escitalopram (an SSRI see here: m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/p5NrrtmFZajTcdY.html) and etizolam (a benzodiazepine). Etizolam is not available in my country so I have not experience in using it. I understand that it is very potent and short acting. The combination of short acting and potent often sets up panic due to a rebound effect. I can’t give you any specific medical advise about this drug, but it might be reasonable to discuss with your doctor switching out of the combination pill and substitute the etizolam component for a longer acting benzo such as diazepam in a comparable strength. There then might be scope to slowly wean off the diazepam. It’s something that you really need to discuss with your prescriber. If you are still stuck then you may also wish to consider getting a second opinion.

There are too many variables to conclude that this thesis is the outcome 100% of the time. My first argument is that the drug allows for a good sleep. Good sleep is a preventative of anxiety. So, irregular use of this drug has enormous benefits to preventing the onset of anxiety episodes. In my case, I operate on around 4 x 5mg doses a week, mostly within 2 hours of bed time. I dont take it every day. i dont take it for longer periods where I know its not needed, like when I am on holidays or have not had bad dreams for a week... I also dont take it if I have consumed more than one alcoholic drink. .. I been using it almost a year and it has done wonders. I am not dependent on it (I have had periods of a week or more where I had no need to take it), but I do use it irregular and at need to moderate rest and prevent the onset of an anxiety attack. Against other medications such as Efexor and other SNRI's, Valium is a wonder drug. SNRI's are a death sentence for 90% of users. Once you are on them, it's almost impossible to get off them. Almost killed me when I came off them. Never again will I touch SNRI's or SSRI's..

@Ethan Coward There’s a great deal of variation. It’s not clear where the threshold is. Some people can take them from time to time with no problems at all. From what I’ve seen clinically: Xanax is the worst of the benzos. People experience rapid deep relief from anxiety. But it wears off fast an there is usually a rebound effect which makes people more edgy and more prone to panic. That happens from a single dose and seems to last for a day or two, until inevitably people take another one and continue the cycle. I don’t prescribe it.

Just try to get a good idea from someone with experience that will know roughly. But I just don’t wanna get myself into one of those situations either I’ve heard it can be bad. Nope, fix title, benzos DO WORSEN Anxiety. Horrible the feeling on and off these drugs eventually. Even when you get off them, if you're like me and hypersensitive then you have serious pain, gastrointestinal problems worse than the most painful stomach you've ever had, on top of that you can't be around people because your brain damaged to the point your brain has no breaking system. Flying mania, the exact opposite of the initial effect of calming your brain Hyper spinning through time and space in free fall just dying to reenter the land of the living again. Don't do these drugs, injuries are understood but not common enough knowledge. I've had cameras in every place you would never want them to be and in the wrong direction, blood tests, heart monitors, you name it, diabetes nope, kidney stones, nope, nada, nothing. No diagnosis and chronic pain. One doc literally said, oh don't worry it's definitely not cancer.. 😲😲 Yes definitely not because looking at your records, you'd be dead by now. You will wish for death if you take these drugs and forget housework, creativity, in fact just washing your own lol things, is a monumental effort because of the high strangeness brain fog. A million thoughts a second and you cannot follow one to doing. Promise everyone, any symptoms you have, ☠️👹 is nothing to what you will have if you take these. It's worse than heroin to come off of so just imagine that, fancy something worse than smack to feel better?

I absolutely love the truth in your video's. It saddens me while also giving me hope. May I ask? I have sleep narcolepsy. Normally I would sleep 11 to 13 hours a night with naps during the day. My psychiatrist prescribed me Xanax and I've been on them neatly 30 years. I was suffering severe anxiety and these Xanax made me feel normal. That was 1994. In 2009 I was missing my son and not really paying attention as my psych Dr asked me "How was my sleep?" Well I kind of just shrugged because I was mostly thinking of my son. I was prescribed 50 mgs of seroquel. Then each time I went back it was upped until I was taking 600 whopping mgs as well as 6 Xanax per day. The seroquel ruined my health and my sleep. It made me hallucinate at high dose and when given intravenously. I've only recently gotten off of the seroquel at the end of October 2022. It was hell but so was being on it. I'm midway in my 3rd month getting off of it. Now I figured I'd just live with the Xanax at my age but what you're saying is so true. A 1 mg tablet does only last about 4 hours and often I feel as though a pill will immediately have the opposite effect as in its not sedating anymore but actually causing anxiety. I'm not getting any sleep w/o the Xanax so my question to you is how do I come off of this after nearly 30 years of daily use? Having never dealt with the anxiety it's a scary thing as well as not being able to sleep at all. Is there any hope for me? My Dr each time offers yet another psych med. They affect me terribly. Idk why or how people could treat each other this way with these medications. I truly miss the days of the sleep narcolepsy when I would yes sleep too much but also the best dreams. I loved my sleep but it's rare now. These drugs have had a negative effect on my sleep narcolepsy as well and I don't know who to go to as I've so little trust now. Seems like I've been off of the seroquel for so long but I'm only on month 3 and the damage it's done hurts me deeply. I feel shame for trusting a Dr. I feel embarrassed I was so stupid to have made this choice to harm myself so badly. My biggest problem has always been motivation so I always seem to fall short. And I don't want to die because I trusted a Dr with a medication I shouldn't have. I didn't know and I wasn't told and I certainly wasn't a sober person on both these drugs. Horrible side effects and loss of so much life. Thank you again for reporting real truth.

  • @thePSYCHcollective

NOT MEDICAL ADVISE: Yes there is hope. Different doctors have different approaches to starting these meds. A common approach is: (1) Prescribe a low dose sedating med. (2) then when tolerance occurs increase the dose repeatedly until (3) dose can’t be increased anymore, so shrug shoulders. The predicament: The problem with xanax is the rapid offset which makes slow dose reduction difficult, rebound anxiety/panic is common on rapid reduction of dose. Many doctors switch people to a long acting med like diazepam (of equivalent dose) then slowly taper that. Slowly. It’s a slow process and it’s no picnic.

@@thePSYCHcollective thank you. Yes my Dr was talking about longer acting benzo's but I hear they're harder to come off of. It would be nice to sleep more than 4 hours. As I've gotten off of the seroquel my dopamine is supposed to be improving in the 3 months time. I hope to see improvements starting soon anyway. I can't imagine even living w/o my Xanax. I'd rather shed that skin while I'm alive. I take other drugs too so they all effect each other in concert. I'm in my 60s. Coming off of the seroquel was so bad. The seroquel will kill you. Pancreas attacks. My heart. Every night I'd wonder if I would die. Terrifying dreams. 123 lb weight gain. They removed my GB and I still have pancreas attacks. Nothing wrong with my GB at all. I've only just quit smoking. The less sleep I get the more I smoke and smoking also halves the effect of the Xanax or so I'm told. Don't let this world use you in this way. Trust only yourself. I needed my gallbladder and it was healthy. They put me on another psych drug and after fighting for it for 4 years that drug made me think it must be my GB that's messed up. It was just the drug. Surgeons do surgery. Be careful when you go. It's what they do. All Drs and hospitals give psych drugs primarily now so that's what they do. I myself would rather take an opioid for pain any day than a psych pill. I hate drugs that make the mind not feel instead of what's hurting. It's hard not to hate. Happy for another day. You have a nice day.

Probably fine, but it depends what you mean by safe. I’d say that short term use to get through something very difficult where there’s an end in sight is quite safe. That dose is low so the risk is quite low. Rebound symptoms shouldn’t be too much of an issue. A risk is that it ends up becoming regular/long-term use and tolerance then causes the dose to go up/rebound to get worse.

I was prescribed 3 mg of Xanax a day for 6 years and recently stopped taking it. The initial withdrawals were awful but what stuck was this intense air hunger. I thought it was never going to go away and was convinced something was physically wrong with my lungs... I had flipped on forums and saw others were suffering with it for months and even years. It seems like the longer people had taken it the longer their air hunger lasted. Luckily about 3 or 4 weeks I started feeling better but I still have intense anxiety and feel like I need to go back on it but I'm not going to because that'll put me back to square one or even worse. I had no idea this medication caused such intense withdrawal, I thought it was a miracle pill at first. They're cracking down on it in my state because so many people are prescribed it.

This is my point. Everyone acts like benzodiazepines are this evil class of drug where you'll need more and more and more to get the same effect. Benzodiazepines are actually one of the classes of drug where evidence has shown that tolerance to the amnesic and anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) properties don't usually occur especially with long acting benzodiazepines like Valium (diazepam), Klonopin (clonazepam) & Librium (chlordiazepoxide). Many people take the same dose for decades and never need an increase in dosage. Even Xanax being short acting, i know someone who was on Xanax for 25 years and never increased their dosage past 2mg a day.

I have been taking bromazepam 1.5 mg in morning and 1.5 mg at 3 pm since more than 20 years. Doctor prescribed me this benzo for major panic attacks. I take Zoloft too since then. I did not know much about benzos. And my dose of benzos has remained more or less the same since I started taking it. I would add 1.5 mg or 3 mg during panic attack or while flying. Now since 6 months ago my new psychiatrist said that we need to tapper off benzos exactly because of the same reason which is explained in this video. I was terrified to hear this. I was too dependent on it and was very scared to tapper off. But she said that you are getting anxiety with same dose. And now the amount of time the effect of this medicine stays in my body is lowered slowly. And once the affect fades away you will have more anxiety than when you took the pill. So this needs to be stopped otherwise the dose will keep increasing. She increased the dose of zoloft to cover my anxiety and staring tappering off the benzos. As expected after 1 month when we reduced my dose till 50% I had a relapse and needed to take the same dose which I was taking all my life. I think I should try water benzo way in which we put 300 ml water in a glass and put the daily dose in it and stir it. And lower the dose from syringe my 1 mm everyday. And take the dose in my case twice a day. Please anyone help me by advising any other way. I am extremely anxious person. Thanks

The ladies question at 11:13 is a classic example of an Academic that’s obviously never taken a Benzo in her life . What a ridiculous concept, no skills are going to Reduce anything further if you have a true dependence on benzos. it consumes your life until it’s under control. You’d have to switch to a long acting benzo if your not on one already . Stabilise for a length of time on a benzo stabilisation program, and reduce under guidance from likely a clinical nurse specialist who will dispense the medication for you and ensure your physically and psychologically ok as it’s both these play a big part once your hooked on these . Also coming off benzos if you have been on them for a long duration of time, it’s that last little bit that’s the hardest part , and it can make you super moody and agitated, and likely something like olanzapine will be needed to combat the mental side of coming off benzos in the short term . Sure learning skills will help , but not when your messed up on benzos . You learn skills once your off this crap .

This is such a narrow-minded thought process. I've been on clonazepam for years, same dosage and i have had plenty of progress with therapy. I no longer have depression which I used to struggle a lot with and my overall anxiety has gotten much better. Clonazepam was a lifesaver for me. Without it I don't think i would have been able to even start therapy and i certainly wouldn't have been able to live a normal life. Just because YOUR experience is one thing doesn't make it true for everyone. Benzodiazepines especially long acting ones have been proven in study after study to NOT cause tolerance to the amnesic and anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects. You do build tolerance to the anticonvulsant and hypnotic effects though so they're not the best when used for insomnia. It's alarmists like you that could end up getting this class of drug banned and then many who would benefit wouldn't be able to receive rhe benefits. Some people therapy and antidepressants dont work for their anxiety. Then what? Gabapentinoids have just as bad of a withdrawal as benzodiazepines and they're the only other option besides alcohol and gaba-b agonists which are easier to overdose and die on and also cause a horrible withdrawal. Benzodiazepines are actually the least damaging of all of those options. They're well tolerated, hard to overdose on and aren't as sedating as their predecessor the barbiturates.

Then with advice I took one extra half pill somewhere in the middle of the day. But in the last few days it's felt like.. I can break one pill just fine for during the day, and have the other half in the evening. I've honestly felt amazing. And strange and surprised. Just many many feelings about all kinds of things. And it's just been great being able to feel things again and feel touched again by all kinds of things. I've had very deep conversations about random things I thought I wouldn't anymore without weed. I am getting my regular hunger back also. I have started hanging out with people again without anxiety. There's still some stuff to learn about how this bee version exactly is going to function more. It's only been 2 weeks. Oh....and there was something I was really proud of. A recent friend of mine apparently smoked pot. I hung with him and he passed a puff. It's never ever in my life been so easy to refuse. Just for real. Just... Focus on just wanting to feel normal. Feeling normal without wanting do just die out of anxiety feels like it's changing my life for the better. I wish you good luck 😊you'll get through the sweat if you get them. Yeah ps: I use what is commonly known as "ambien" for sleep. It's extremely heavy, but I can't otherwise. The sleep might be the most important part of the process

there's actually no end. Mediation, rea more good books, learn do deal with anxiety on your own as literally billions of humans do. Anxiety, for one, can push the mind the a place where you say (without even knowing) "how can I fix this? what's causing my anxiety?" Followed by that realization, many people naturally, find ways to improve their life without medication. If you can have more faith in yourself, tough it out through some tough times, eat well, sleep, well, think positive, and exercise even if its 10-15 minutes a day. Get fresh air. Now the conclusion: I am prescribed 60 2mg Xanax bars a month along with 60 2mg Subutex. I have been mostly tryin to save most of my Xanax bars for the apolocalypse, but that's easier said than done. I don't take any of the Subutex except in a blue moon if I feel like gettin fucked up.. I take Kratom instead...lol I like it better no joke. Never did dope. Did a shit load of roxys (perc 30s, blues). First time offered Xanax was well over ten years ago from my old Kush connect he would bring 300 sticks back with my quap. I turned him down at first I just liked my Kush. So I took a bag of the sticks w the kush..it's spotted anyway, but its no drama like that -im on point. Yo ahah its funny as hell first time takin em my boys came to me like yoo bro no more those things, I dont remember the last month mannn..... next week..." yo where those bars at?" ahah oh xanax. wish I never started but whatever i got a script plus another that ppl would murder for. soweeeeeeeee

@@puckerbutton7025 use cdb AND thc. get a 1:1, or little edible gummies. That way you can control your thc intake at a low, controlled pace. Me personally my fav from all time is the CheebaChews 180mg thc DECA DOSE tootsie roll.. I had a of em and a told good friends MAKE SURE you only start with half IDCCCC how big of a stoner you think you are. Let's just say that a cpl ppl lost their jobs over this cause they couldn't make it to work or were sick. Didn't listen to me. Edibles are completely different especially 180mg medical dose. Hey u live and u learn I guess lol. I had Quad doses, same size as the Deca. The Quad, which is probably their most popular, destroys me in a perfect way, not overwhelming. I had to develop a tolerance before I could eat a whole Deca and not be completely zonked out. Ate half once back when and slept through the super bowl. I got these cheeba chews straight from the owner. Happens to be from my home town. He mailed a care package back home and it was great. over 100 candies at 1/3 the real price.
