I have this problem! I have bilateral RIC hearing aids but with the open air dome, and I definitely notice a stark difference in amplfication (I used to have BTE aids as a kid but I don't like how large they are!) My provider has now fitted me for custom solid moulds for the RIC aids and I'm hoping to get those new ones soon.

Hi Dr cliff I have moderate high frequency hearing loss, but fairly good low/mid frequency hearing. I have noticed most standard power receivers have a fitting range that starts at 10-20 DB some of my thresholds are better than that. Will a hearing aid work well if my audiogram is better than the fitting range in some areas?

I don't have my current audiogram, but recall ranges being from 35 to 70 (not over 80). So I think I'm in the moderate to severe range. I got a RIC which is what two places recommended. I chose the Oticon Opn S miniRite R, but Starkey was recommended. I chose Oticon because a previous place (not equipped to do REM) recommended the Ruby S and Open S, so I was bias to Oticon at that point. I tried on the Ruby S and Opn S, but couldn't tell the difference between them. My current dome is Bass 6MM double vent. I have two adjustments left I think. At my last follow up we set the amplification lower because I was getting too much noise, music or youtube videos wasn't (and still doesn't) sound right if I use my hearing aids, calls are ok, and tv is ok (at least I'm lowering the volume now). Due to lowering amplification, the feed back has increased (and she said it would). How does one know if I have the correct dome? How does one know what amplification to have the hearing aids at if they've never had hearing aids for 30 years? I'm a little frustrated as I don't know what exactly it is that I'm supposed to be getting overall. I feel I may have chosen the wrong hearing aids. I'm not even using all the features due to the issues stated above and as far as going down to basic I'll just be loosing the bands/channels I have now. I know I'm supposed to hear better, but that's all I know. I'm constantly turning them up or down via the app just like I did when I had the iic. I hadn't really thought about the dome or receiver until this video. Honestly I thought after 30 years hearing aids would somehow be totally different technology wise from the iic I had at that time. The only difference to now is all the bells and whistles they offer w/the hearing aids of today. Any suggestions?

Audiologist in Canada here. Short answer: Your hearing aid provider should know what kind of dome to give you. Longer answer: Judging by your description of your hearing levels, a double vent dome is probably fine, as long as it's not too small. It should fit snug in your ear canal but without discomfort. But more importantly: If you have gone 30 years without hearing aids, it is common for things to not sound quite right at first, as you need to get used to them again. Do you have any hearing appointments coming up? You may want to book one, so you can let your hearing aid provider know that you have are having questions about adapting to your new hearing aids, and see what they suggest.

What if parts of your audiogram fit _above_ the shaded hearing range? Is it problematic if the hearing aid is overpowered for some frequencies of your hearing loss? How and why? Is it a matter of fine vs crude levels of correction at the overpowered frequencies?

If the entry of canal ( on the first bend ) is small but after the bend, the canal is proper in size, which IIC fitting will be proper? Please guide

My question is: Would an ultra power hearing aid with ear molds work if the hearing goes from moderate at 1,500hz to profound, requiring 110 DB at 2,000hz? Can such a hearing aid help improve speech recognition?

I have the OPNS3 hearing aids minirite version with Oticon Plastic custom moulds! I am using the 100 receivers! An Audi has told me that 100 receivers are the most powerful that I can have for these moulds and that the maximum output of these aids is 100db so that because my right ear has losses extending to 100 at 2000 hz and 110 at 6000 hz he says that I need Oticon Exceed! I thought there was a 105 model of receiver but maybe I am wrong? Does the 105 give 105db output?

Hello, In order to check the quality of hearing can we take an audiogram while using my Phonak hearing aid ?

What would you advise me to say when I go in to the VA in Prescott, Az. I know that my hearing loss has changed. My dishwasher is now quiet when it was loud when installed 5 years ago. Also can not any longer watch tv when my wife is watching it so I have to fake it or not watch when she does. Also she has to repeat at least 3 times to me and gets so frustrated.

Dr. Cliff. Have you ever had patient state that their hearing aids caused their "actual hearing to change" As in listening to music now sounds distorted on certain songs.....now with or without the hearings aids on. Thx-

I think I have some issues similar to this wearing a hearing aid. I couldnt hear a lot of a tv show I was watching, but when the news came on no issues.

Dr Cliff , please talk about issues related to *'Resound 3D app'* . After latest firmware , we are not able to evn pair *linx quattro HA* with the app. It is really disgusting. Out voice is not being heard. Yours will be.

do you think you could review the innerscope hearing aid? i saw some on walmarts website and noticed is was alot cheaper but im not sure if thats for a reason.

My over the counter hearing aid worked well for a couple of weeks, then stopped. I don't want to part with a lot of money, can you tell me what I should do to start my OTC aids working again.

What level receiver would you use for a flat moderate loss? I have had the standard in the past, now just got medium power in my new devices,.. is it normal that they feel super strong? Am I supposed to have a medium power receiver for a moderate loss? Particularly for Widex

It depends on the brand and the actual gain/output numbers for the receiver. It also depends on how much gain is needed for your size of ear canals. Therefore, it is impossible to answer this question without testing each of them inside your ears.

@@DrCliffAuD I was saying particularly for Widex, but I’m saying from a general standpoint, being that I have a flat moderate loss, does that make sense that i was given a medium power receiver? I have also heard that Widex also doesn’t make standard level receivers anymore.. i had only used standard in my other devices, but once i switched i was given the medium power level

I need a decent hearing aid that also helps cancel out some of my tinnitus. Unfortunately I'm not wealthy. $3,000 per hearing aid...yeah right.

@@paddyotable, I’m in a similar situation, though I have an HSA I could use to pay for mine. I went to Costco for a pair of their KS 10.0 hearing aids for $1,399. (That’s for both ears, not each ear.). They’ll test you for free, and you can even make an appointment where they fit you with a test pair baseline programmed to your prescription and let you walk around the store to experience the difference, and the maintenance visits are included in the cost of the hearing aids.
