Understanding Disk Allocation In Pro Tools

In this video we take a look at the Pro Tools Disk Allocation window and discuss reasons why imported files may not end up in the session's main audio files folder and the best ways of managing disk allocation and file locations. We also discuss the 'Automatically copy files on import' option.
Gaining an understanding of the settings discussed in this video will help to prevent missing file issues when moving sessions between systems in the future.

Especially when trying to balance creativity and tech. Thankfully there are people like you who help educate inform and help us maneuver so we can get back to writing unique quality music. I had moved my session around a bit and now backing up to hard drive. Save Copy in suggestion is perfect. Great info and moved along swiftly!

Thanks. You'd be surprised how many times I see sessions from people who have moved them around and lost files in the process.

Thanks for the video, however, I'm a little confused regarding the specifics earlier on. Whether "Automatically Copy Files on Import" is checked or not, my imported audio is found in the session's audio files, no problem. I've attempted multiple times with .wavs from my downloads folder, which is primarily where both my previous and future imports would be coming from. What am I missing here? Appreciate any help.

That will most likely be because the audio you're importing is of a different sample rate to that of your session. Under those circumstances, it always gets copied into the Audio Files folder as Pro Tools has to apply sample rate conversion, thereby creating a new audio file at the new sample rate.

Greetings from Morocco. thanks for the great video paul. love your contents. I wonder if you could help me sir. I always have a problem in PT since I am mostly working on documentaries. I don't know why but I always struggle when I am given OMF files. I always have to link the audios manually, one by one, in the task manager. it never work automatically. and sometimes there are more than 1000 audio that I must link, one by one, and it is time consuming. is there a way i can commit and link the audio files manually by one click? or is it a way I can make it work automatically not manually. thank u

If it doesn't link automatically, you should be able to point Pro Tools towards the files in one go using the Find Links button in the relink window. Use this rather than Find All Candidates if you can. Also, if you're having problems with externally referenced OMF files (ones with separate audio files), ask the editor for one with embedded audio for future projects and you shouldn't encounter any issues.

@@paulmaunder3007 Thank you so much Paul. I guess the editors always send me separated tracks and not embedded. i'll make sure it is embedded next time. I already tried the find link buttion, and tried all possibilities (by name, by date, both...) it couldn't link any. I always have to select each audio, one by one, than click on find candidate... till I group all my needed files and click commit at the end. Thanks for the great help

In Pro Tools First, I have no disk allocation tab under Setup. Any ideas where I could find it?

  • @professorfunk847

I don't even have "Disk Allocation" option under my "Setup". I am using Protools First. Is that why? Is that also why I get "Can't create Audio File on Drive xxx"?
