THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I HAVE BEEN SAYING! I'm so sick of the gatekeeping and "white saviourism" in the pagan community!

It's really just that simple. Sometimes it takes people a little (sometimes a while) to get the mental gears turning again.

Thank you for this video! You're making some valid points. I'm very eclectic but I don't want anyone in my community to feel like they're being threatened because of what I'm doing or even just being. Which is why I keep observing where certain practices I've adopted have started for me and if I'm honoring them enough. If those practices are something I can call mine to begin with. Language matters too. For example instead of saying "smudge" I say "smoke cleanse" and source my tools for such cleansing from Europe or at the very least the folx who don't steal these resources. I care about the energy of exploitation that those thieves have put onto those tools. There's also a lot of appropriation when it comes to Eastern spiritual traditions and practices but going into all of that would be a freaking novel. I have been guilty of doing that too. It's way too normalised. But we are constantly growing. These are important discussions so I'm glad you posted this video 😊

It's funny I've always called it saging even if I'm burning cedar or something. But yes the words are important as well because it spreads misinformation of what the actual practice is about.

I'll definitely discuss some of this in my own content too. I've kinda referenced it here and there but a proper video has to be made lol. It's a broad topic.

I believe indigenous people have the right to hide their rituals and the names of their spiritual entities, but do not have ownership of the plants of nature (no one should, certainly not pharmaceutical corporations), and also do not have ownership over ideas and philosophies. In fact, I believe we all enrich each other when we share our spiritual practices.

I agree no one has ownership of anything within nature. What I do understand is that the popularization of white sage has made it endangered and we wanna make sure they have access to it for their specific rites and rituals while others should be honoring the plant as well. I do believe everyone is enriched when we share our spiritual practices only when we truly listen and immerse ourselves in other cultures. Otherwise everything is a watered down version of it's truest extent. At least that's my understanding from seeing the arguments on both sides ❤️

I am newer to this subject. I am still confused about gate keeping when the person has no intention of learning the subject as it’s core and the intent is to modify the practice for personal profit… specifically indigenous and yoga. Is it appropriate to gate keep them? And tell these people they are wrong? How do we become an ally to preserve the sacredness? Maybe that’s not my job as a white person? Still kinda confused on where that line is drawn.

If it's an open practice guide to them to proper resources. If it's closed and they can be initiated guide them to someone who can speak for that community. If they have no true idea of sacredness sometimes they have to hit rock bottom to realize the forces their dealing with and why it can't be taken out of context. You can't help someone who doesn't want to learn even if you give them the proper information. I really think gatekeeping is just for closed communities. Otherwise, it comes across as dismissive if it's an open practice. Many people have their own idea of what is considered a closed practice but a good rule of thumb is understanding that there are certain cultural contexts that we can't integrate or requires an initiation. Anything else is misconstrued gatekeeping usually in the form of white supremacy. If that makes sense.

You can be an educator for the misguided if they're willing to listen. Otherwise you could only speak for your own self and experiences. If you're not part of that said community that is actually closed then it's best to let them speak for themselves.

I don't believe white sage has been declared as endangered and neither is Palo Santo. But hopefully they keep an eye on it.

7:30 i definitely feel this is possible. I've been drawn to specific pantheons since childhood. And drawn to Satan. I was never scared of the "Boogeyman" more curious.

Very important topic that can be very easily misunderstood. Cultural appropriation has become more prevalent because of diasporia and specifically white people thinking we are entitled to learn and consume especially if it's been somewhat openly talked about or published. Some people may be well intentioned, going in with the desire to learn, and share what they've learned but we need to understand where it is our place and where it is not. I acknowledge we are not perfect but when in doubt we should seek guidance. I like how you said if you're looking to practice something you should be taking the time to research and learn so you can properly respect that practice/culture. Just because we resonate with something does not mean that we have to consume it or practice it we can respect it and honor it from an outsider's perspective and I like how you acknowledge that. Also, I believe gatekeeping has been used as a slur and in my opinion, in certain instances, it's necessary to retain the sacredness of a culture and practice. If you are not within that culture or practice you have to understand that you can 100% be denied to be initiated or go through a right of passage to learn more because it is not up to you if you can practice or not it's up to the people within that culture-- because it is their intention to safeguard their cultures and practices from being whitewashed and appropriated. Thank you for this!
