It's especially funny for those of us who listen to the podcast, cuz usually they're a lot more off the rails themselves. Though I will say, when it comes to the actual notes and tastes, even when they're drunk on their own show, they do make it a point to keep those things serious and genuine. But everything else is a wonderful shit show, highly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed this video.

We intentionally pour the beer that way to get the carbonation going and some good head on the beer. It agitates the beer and opens up the aroma, which is important for tasting. Plus we're using little tulip glasses. We don't really need to tilt it.

Fun fact: Roasted malts taste slightly like coffee and chocolate because coffee and chocolate get most of their flavour from being literal burnt seeds. Just like Roasted malts. Second fun fact: The Reinheitsgebot is still in effect and Bavarian brewers are getting antsy because they want to add cool things to their beers, and french people are getting antsy because they think it's unfair and violates the treaty of Rome, or some shit.

We learn about different types of beer, how to properly enjoy them, how to talk about them like we know something, and (most importantly) learn what a beer suicide tastes like. (I am grimacing even as I type these words). Hopefully you'll be ever-closer to perfecting the "gentleman" aspect of the Modern Rogue after watching. -BB

10:55 is so true. Guinness was a no-go for me, but living in Ireland, it's almost frowned upon not to drink it. After a year or so on a warm summer's day I had a nice and cold Guinness and I really started liking it. So much so that I hardly drank any other beer for the subsequent 2-3 years. Now I'm more into a good IPA and if it's on a night out in a pub I'll go for light lagers (as I age I can't drink too many heavy-ish beers on a night out).

Just a little thing you should know as Beerists: Pislener Urquel is from the town of Pilsen in the Czech Republic. It's considered to be the world's first pale lager and the origins of the beer give name to the beer style pilsener! And to be honest, Weihenstephaner is not know for their pilsner but their wheat beers, their pilsener is not that common outside Bavaria. Warsteiner, Bitburger and Kronenbacher are the more common ones, in Germany that is. But keep up the good work educating Americans on European Beer culture.

I live in Michigan and this place is just lousy with good breweries. The breakfast stout from Founders is pretty good, but their oak barrel aged Scotch ale called Backwoods Bastard is, by far, the best beer I've ever had. It's strong, it's sweet and syrupy, and it's got great flavor. I prefer dark beers, so it may not be for everyone, but I highly recommend it. Speaking of dark beers, the color I look for is the foam. Dogfish head makes (or made) an imperial stout called Miles Davis Bitches Brew. My wife made fun of me, saying I was drinking soy sauce.

In regard to pilseners, it was my understanding that the only true pilseners came from either Belgium or the Czech Republic, kind of like the only true champagne is made with grapes from the Champagne region of France.. Anything else was just made in the pilsener style. Edit: Speaking of taking a few tries to clue into some beers, I've been gaining an appreciation for darker and darker beers over the last few years. My first experience with a Guinness was back when the darkest thing I'd drink would be a Yeungling lager. I gave it a few shots, but it was entirely off-putting from the first three sips. Fast forward three years, I've started trying and enjoying some things like Sam Adams cream stout, so I give it another shot over a pasta dinner and it immediately became my favorite companion to a good fettuccine alfredo. It's amazing how our tastes change over time.

I hate when people say things like "german pilsners". The word "pilsner" is from Pilsen which is city in Czechia. The term originates from brand of czech beer (yes, czech beer NOT german) called Pilsner Urquell which wash the very first beer of this type. Pilsners are NOT german.

  • @matz4k

Pilsener was copied from Pilsener Urquell and later adopted in Germany. The word Pilsener is nowadays a beer style in germany, while the only remaining pilsener from czechia is the original Urquell. So saying german pilsener is completely alright. Have you ever heard of french fries? - spoiler, they are from belgium :)

@@matz4k Firstly, there are dozens of breweries making pilsners in Czechia. Secondly, have you ever hread of cultural appropriation? Finally, the word pilsner is a beer style in many countries, not just in Germany. It changes nothing that it is in fact czech beer the same way as Lambic is Belgian beer even if made in Indonesia, or Gose is German beer even if made in New Zealand. By the way if you call yourself "fries expert" and claim that french fries are french you are just a fool.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching Brian's and Jason's reactions to the gose and the imperial stout. Stouts are my go to and the heavier, darker, and higher gravity the better. What John said about imperials, "you should not finish one of these by yourself", made me question a few things because I have finished many a bomber of imperial stout in a night all by myself! And I decided I loved every sip and John is wrong about bombers of imperial! For science I'll add that I also love strong black gourmet coffee, 2 or 3 cups a day. I just put a dash of cold water in my coffee so I can drink it right away!

Mishn0 to be honest I think you could say pilsener is a German&Czech kind of thing. Before pilsener beer from plzen tasted like shit, that's why they brought in a Bavarian brewer to teach them how to make good beer. as a result a changed version of the Bavarian beer was created, pilsener urquell. and soon after everyone in Germany made their beer like that.

I think because it was introductory, they decided to go most familiar (Pilsner) and work toward the most wild (Saizon, Gueze). They had some semi-familiar ones in the middle (IPA, Stout, Quad), so I think that the progression made sense to me for what they were trying to do.
