The homeless population used to be the mentally ill, and they preferred the streets, that has changed drastically over the recent years. There is not enough funding, programs and places for them to go now, they can’t keep up with the demand. More and more people are living in their cars, this is a spill over to that too. The drug population is also now on the streets which makes it especially difficult.

Sadly that is so true. I move back to Florida in 2005. And the people were down there even then. Those are the ones that were trying to stay warm without sleeping on the great on the streets and just basically dying of everything. This is just so sad. Even now.n

Not this many, I had to take that route for two years afternoon to after twelve and I would definitely have noticed.

There's hundreds of thousands of homeless Americans and there all around. Always remember you can be what ever you want just don't ask for money. Unless you a foreign country then you get everything you need

I'm born and raised in Philadelphia and yes we have alot of homeless people. But so does New York city, Las Vegas and Los angeles has us beat when it comes to homelessness, because it's so expensive to live there.

What’s happening to my home town? I won’t move back there to live but I hate to see it disintegrating like this.

This has been going on for YEARS! I left for the Marines in 1986, and it’s never been THIS BAD! (Granted the news clip is covering the effects of today.) In light of the current decade permeated by a botched election, an annoying pandemic, and violent riots that are falsely labeled as “Peaceful,” Philly has lost the appeal of many natives and tourists. Like every other city...Philadelphia has “failure” written in its outlook. My hometown has its days numbered!

There's a much bigger tunnel like the Gallery at 30th Street. It got closed during the 70s cuz my mom called the cops. The people down there chased us.

Country is crumbling. Way too many jobless people and businesses being destroyed.

Raising minimum wage will make things worse business owners are going to say where not able to pay that much they will hire less people or they will just use kiosks to replace a person I think the biggest problem in America people don't have there priorities straight like buying expensive cellphones and expensive cars and then not paying for there priorities like rent and utilities

So many empty deserted buildings, houses. So many people own them and let them go unkempt, unused. Open them up and give these people a job to clean them up while they stay there. Sad to see people freezing and no shelter when there are so many abandoned, neglected empty places.

It’s there as we speak. I encountered it last Saturday and went right back up above ground.

It is tragic but also their are many who choose this lifestyle. I was on Broad and Arch and a lady offered to take this homeless lady to a program that helps homeless people get housing and jobs. The lady said that she was scared of a job and wouldn't ever want to work. Some really need help and others really choose this lifestyle

I think homelessness can be divided into 4 main categories: Substance addiction, Mental illness, lack of affordable housing and choice. Mental illness and lack of affordable housing is beyond the control of the those people. Substance abuse is self inflicted. Choice is by right. I feel for the mentally ill and the working people who can't afford rent. That's the saddest part of homelessness. People who work two or even three jobs and still barely make it. Mentally ill who are allowed to wonder the streets when they should be in an Institution.

Philadelphia has a serious rat problem it will get as bad as new york soon the homeless discard uneaten food everywhere that feeds them. I've seen piles of garbage near homeless encampment. But like always nothing gets addressed til its far bigger than it should have been

One problem that is solvable. Put trashcans every 20ft and a portapotty next to it. Pay sanitation workers to go through and clean both every single day. That would also solve the hygiene problem.

Get the homeless into COVID-19 Hotels for testing/vaccinations, and get them signed up for the Federal HUD/SECTION 8 program, as well! Albuquerque, NM, is doing this.

No city wants to be the first to have bold action because that encourages more homeless to move to the area if they think they can get help which just further stretches already thin resources. That’s why a federal approach is needed.

It would be nice if the govt would build tiny houses everywhere and find out what people needs are to get back on their feet. Do they need to be retrained for a job? Do they need help with mental issues or substance abuse?

Nice thought, but NEVER, ever, have a person you don't know stay in your home. Manager I worked with took a homeless man in. The homeless man killed him. We have good shelters here. He should have taken the man to a shelter.

People have no heart. Do you want people to freeze to death instead? Or squat in tax paying citizens private property? 800,000 more people fell under the poverty line due to COVID 19 in the US, on top of the poverty/homeless problem many cities already have. The city should take care of these people. If they don’t want them here they need to take the 100’s of unused property and land owned by PHA and Philadelphia Land Bank and find somewhere for these people to live !

@@takethat863 that’s part of the answer. Unfortunately there are still many people who will remain jobless and homeless years after this pandemic has ended.

The drugs are plentiful and really easy to get especially since the police can’t go into a persons tent without a warrant or court order.

The way they're handling this virus with these lockdown is causing a lot more issues

Now you know how us people in Kensington feel ! When we have to walk around our neighborhoods with people sleeping,doped up,shooting up,trash and human shit is everywhere

That started in the late nineties with the drug addicts it got worse as the years went by the people don’t speak for there neighborhoods they act like it’s ok. That’s a problem that the neighborhood let grow it’s nobody’s fault but the neighborhood.

Yep.. the illiteracy rate in America is getting worse. People really should learn to use proper grammar too. It helps when they present ideas to be taken serious.

Maybe he should walk through it more often. Bring lots of socks to give out. Homeless people need socks and a smile.

There are places for these people to go. They do not want to follow rules of a OHS shelter. Most if not all are on drugs and you cannot smoke cigarettes or consume alcohol at a city shelter. They make up excuses like "we will get robbed and my life is at risk at a shelter", not true. OHS shelters have rules and you cannot sit around all day doing nothing. And yes, they have drug treatment and mental health programs, These people choose to be on the street.
