Underground Explore Of Historic Desert Gold Mine, Aerial Tram, Ore Car, Artifacts and Mountain Hike🔦
For this underground mine explore we start by driving the Jeep as far as we could up a narrow and remote canyon in the mountains of Death Valley. After reaching an impasse we hiked the rest of the way up the canyon until we came to the historic abandoned mine site. Once there we found a very large ore bin and the associated lower tram terminal of an aerial tram. After exploring the ore bin and the mechanical equipment of the tram, we found the steep trail that leads high up the mountain to the mine and to the upper tram terminal. We first explored the underground mine drifts and found some interesting artifacts and workings. We then headed over to the trestle that leads to the tram terminal. The upper tram terminal is very interesting and the equipment to move the tram buckets up and down is all still there. We hope you enjoy the explore of this beautiful area and the historic mine and mining equipment.

How do I contact you?
The side dump car at the bottom is not part of the truck up in the mine, as its a swivel dump truck. i worked that mine back in the early 1990s and i am the one that hauled the gas engine and elevator winch up to the top of the tram. We gave up using the too and fro tram and used the elevator winch to haul one of the tram buckets up and down the tram cable. The name of the mine is the Gold Spur mine, and you missed one tunnel about 75 feet above the canyon floor. i worked the mine on top for about 3 months before i climbed up the small canyon from the main canyon and found a tunnel that was started to run under the ore body and followed a 4 foot wide clay seam. a flash flood had removed the dump because it was mostly fine clay. Up in the main mine, i drilled one hole into the stope and hit a pocket of pure iron pyrite that rained glitter like pyrite down on me. In the early 1990s there was a nice road to the camp at the bottom of the tram and i drove a car to the camp with no problem.
@TomandJulieMineExploring

Thanks for adding all that information, I really appreciate it. I didn't think that side dump car at the bottom would have had a swivel like that one inside the mine. I saw what looked like the box from the truck that is in the mine way down below in the canyon below. Someone must have sent it off the edge. The tram operates as I suspected, just the one bucket up and back. How did you manage to get the engine and tranny up there? If I ever get back there I'll look for the lower working. Thanks again for the comment!👍👍

Hi Tom and Julie. That engine and Transmission is an L series engine possibly an L1600 built from around 1967-1978 Most likely in the US from a Datsun 510 Sedan. If you figure Datsun car bodies didn't last very long in those days, your probably looking at that mine being in operation as late as the mid 70s to mid 80s.

Tram and ore tram bucket definitely old school, thirties and forties. That datsun engine and trans from a later period, someone came back in the eighties and reworked it when gold prices went up. A lot of time and energy went into that place, looks like the ore body played out pretty quickly though. Probably not a lot of profit made on that venture.

The rail is 12 lb ASCE section. Rail was available in 8, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, 25, 30, and 35 and up sections. The sections up to about 20 lb were used in mines and industrial purposes. Some of the early narrow-gauge railroads used 20 or 25 lb and up rail. These small rails were usually 10 feet long and then from 30 feet. With two carrying cables, this aerial ropeway had 2 buckets at one time. The loaded one would pull the empty back up.

Thanks for the comment, Roy. I agree about the rail size and that the tram was once a gravity style setup. It was converted in the 1990's to the one bucket with the gas engine. Appreciate the comment!👍👍
Hello T & J. Really enjoyed your explore here & glad you made a trip to this one. The last time we were there was around 12 years or so ago and pleasantly surprised that it still looks the same and that the ore cart trestle is still walkable! If I remember, that wheel barrel in the mine used to have a steel wheel on it. The canyons throughout that area are sure scenic!

I don’t know much about the mechanics and all of the miners gear but can say they were some hardy hombres lugging that steel up thar. You two are some hardy folks yourself and thank you for all your insights

They are fun to see. They are probably relatives of the burros that worked in the mines back in the day. Thanks for the comment, Joe!👍👍
Love the trestle and tram

Oh yes, aren't they great. Would have loved to see an ore car rolling on that trestle. Thanks for watching!👍👍
Awesome artifacts, I'm amazed the mineshaft was so small considering all the work to move the heavy equipment up there... Merry Christmas

It does seem to be overbuilt for the size of the workings. Fun to see it all though. Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas, Dave!👍👍

It is unbelievable that man was able to overcome completely inhospitable places into working, money making ventures. To be able to assemble trams at such extreme angles. At Cerro Gordo that tram over there goes on and on over canyon after canyon bringing buckets of ore way up in the air to trucks or processing plants way down below. It's cool that this guy worked at a mine and is able to explain EXACTLY what is what and how it works. neat.

Yes, it is almost unbelievable what the miners accomplished back in the day building these mines. I don't understand how they even got some of the heavy tram parts up the mountain and then wrestled them into place. Today you would need a crane to move those parts into position. Thanks for commenting, Paul!👍👍

@@TomandJulieMineExploring Exactly. It must have taken massive amounts of manpower. Thanks for making these videos. They are good.
Hello Tom and Julie, Very interesting. It's obviously an old mine that was reworked in the '90's or later. Seems like it was still Datsun in the '80's. I'm guessing that the later operation used only one tram bucket and the winch ran it up and down. All of the air hose and fittings looked fairly new. Wheelbarrow did not look very old. Oh, 12# rail. Thanks for the tour.

Good point about the tram only having one bucket. I was wondering about that engine as I believe it was originally setup as a gravity style tram. Thanks for the rail info. Appreciate your comment as always, David!👍👍
