    The thing with sub is that it is not translated exactly. There are so many different ways they're translated but they're written for quick readability rather than trying to nail everything. People comparing languages they don't speak will always confuse me

    Don't know, I've seen subs with a lot of detailed information with no regard for quick readability at all, had to pause) And at least sub lets you actually hear when some obvious thing gets translated wrong. For example, English translators (and ours, who just translate from English rather than from original) just love for some reason to turn a single gently wishpered name into whole sentence. As if translators assume that non-japanese viewers wouldn't be able to comprehend simple tender "Naruto" without adding "how are you, where you've been, I'm so worried". And sometimes both sub and dub without any reason transform some neutral "so that's how it is" into something like "I'm fed up with this, hate you so much" - changing whole mood and meaning. In dub you wouldn't even know that, while in sub you authomatically understand such basic things, you hear that only three calm words were said, not ten angry ones. So I think subs are the obvious choice...

    @@MWMTEE how so? You can confirm this for yourself if you watch anything with subtitles regularly. Yes, translation often plainly lying, trying to adapt meaning for local culture or add some unnecessary flavor. Yes, with subs you can notice it and understand some original phrases even without knowledge of the language. With dub you can't and just live with wrong impression about story and characters. Just facts, check on your own, compare. If single sigh and name literally gets translated as sentence with several questions in it - what's there to argue about and why would you think I'm wrong?)

    Actually in first clip, sub Kakashi does sound like he is talking to a child as he is being very slow and using very kind and reassuring tone while extending the vowel at the end of the sentence. He does not sound so badass during this conversation. It was just his natural deep voice. Maybe it is difficult to understand his tone if u r not native speaker

    I feel like these Dub vs Sub Naruto videos are the "Normies Sub Fan Apology Tour". Anyone else feel like some of the takes reflect the complete opposite of what's there? People continue to bring this up but Japanese, when translated to English doesn't emerge as cleanly when it's direct. It creates dialogue that sounds robotic and totally not how a person would actually speak. The dub has introduced more colorful language and expressions that we use here in the west that make the characters feel more relatable and human without taking away from the original meaning, but the Normies called that "G-rated sugarcoating" -_- The lines, "Well, both you and I aren't the lucky ones..." and "But we're not the worst either" sound so generic and bland compared to "Neither of us has lived a charmed life, exactly" and "Still, we're not all that bad off". Also, some crucial clips are missing. I know we have to be selective for the videos sake, but if I were making the choices I would've included the scene where we hear the iconic "abandoning your friends makes you worse than scum" line for the first time (even though it's still early Kakashi and Dave gets even better with age/also to bring it full circle with the scene when he says it to Obito would've been phenomenal to play in front of the Normies), the scene where Kakashi monologues internally during his final fight with Obito before he stabs him through, and the scene where he's sitting over him empathizing with Obito after he's had the Ten-tails sucked out of him. Those are crucial to Kakashi's development as a character. The scene right before he's about to finish off Zabuza, shit-talking to him and Haku saves him is pretty good too. I would've removed the Pain arc scene as it's partially inconsequential, though maybe a more emotional piece might've been the scene where he's reflecting on his life before passing into limbo after that same fight just because there's more personal material there. Ultimately, I just have to come to the conclusion that it's weird to have a contest between two different languages and performances when the judges can't understand or comprehend the inflections and expressions in Japanese. When they make remarks about how a Japanese person performed a line and how it affected the tone of the scene, how do they know that inflection means the same thing as it does in English or in a western culture? There's a lot of subtle differences, though I know we're doing our best out here. I feel like they're being harsher on Kakashi and other dub actors in certain instances because they possess the English comprehension to understand fully take it apart. Sometimes, I feel like it's for no substantive reason at all. With the sub, you lack the ability to understand it fully so there's this alluring component to it that makes it sound cool and mysterious. So you can affirm it without truly being able to appraise it. Not saying sub actors aren't amazing, just saying the contest seems weird to have. This would be a more interesting conversation to have with the Normies in a bigger debate, maybe with callers in a podcast format giving their takes.

    Kakashi's dub voice actor is honestly fucking amazing. Like Guy, he stands out in almost every scene. Kazuhiko Inoue is one of the greatest VAs of all time and I love his Kakashi, but I wouldn't be upset at all if Dave took this. His Kakashi is just that good. And that's the thing with English Dubs- they often are standout performances that almost everyone loves, but the overall quality of the cast is often much lower than the sub. In Japan voice acting is taken very seriously. Major VAs are mini-celebs and the best of the best are just calebs. Because of that, even minor roles are given careful consideration and the VAs really do give it their all. But when a dub needs someone to voice "Background Character B" it really does feel like they're pulling random people off the street sometimes.

  • @awsomeboy360

    You think voice acting isn't taken seriously here? Lol. People always bring this up, but that has nothing to do with how the quality of the dub. They take their jobs very seriously and I don't think another cast would have done it any better in English.

  • @animagamer2

    @animagamer2

    8 ай бұрын

    @@awsomeboy360" You think voice acting isn't taken seriously here?" *_Yes._* Many famous voice actors spoke out about how undervalued they are in the industry despite being at the top of their game in the Western voice acting scene. And it's worse for people who work primarily in anime. When someone wants something dubbed and they have the choice between paying Jonny Yong Bosch a fair rate for his talents or just hiring some random C-lister and paying him a fraction of the cost, 8/10 times they go with the C-lister. That would never happen in Japan. The D and C list voice actors work their way up the chain, typically only getting background roles in major productions and starring roles in minor ones. If an unknown voice actor plays a major role in something it's because they have a lot of people in the industry vouching for their talent. Western voice actors wished the industry cared enough to ask for their opinion on anything. Oh, by the way, this is why if you look through any famous Western voice actors role listings you'll almost always find a role in some random leggo Star Wars game. Because games with large companies backing them just want their games to be good and are willing to pay top dollar to get the best talent. I can't remember who, but someone said in the past that it's those roles that put food on the table and that they only voice work for anime out of passion.

On the other end of the spectrum, voices for Hashirama and Tobirama are vastly better in sub so it would be fun for them to hear it in this setting as well.

To paraphrase Connor, “Japan has voice acting school whereas we just have acting school.” Now, we do have voice over class, but it’s still not the same thing. Either way, most dub voice actors lack the training of their Japanese counterparts. That issue combined with the problem of having to match the lip flaps puts western anime actors at a substantial disadvantage to their Japanese counterparts. Furthermore, a lot of people accuse western voice actors of sounding unnatural and emotionless. I feel that criticism misunderstands both VO and traditional acting. Believe it or not, many voice over teachers do NOT teach you to sound natural, they teach you to sound CLEAN bc natural dialogue sounds disgusting when recorded into a track. They also teach you to enunciate EVERYTHING in order to sound as clear as possible. So, when someone accused a western dub actor of sounding unnatural-well, that’s the point, at least according to my experience. Trust me, you do not want to listen to raw audio-audio that hasn’t been cleaned either by the actor or by sound editing programs. Now onto the emotion part. Western acting schools don’t teach you to “put emotions into your delivery”. Instead, they teach to be believable and, more importantly, to play what your character is DOING. The last point is kind of hard to explain, but, here’s how I put it. Let’s say your character is asking a question about something important in a scene. Chances are, a traditional acting teacher will teach you to play the ACTION of asking a question, not the “emotion behind the question”. I really hope that makes sense. The point of doing this is to make the dialogue sound ACTIVE, not natural. A great example of of this kind of acting is Violet Evergarden’s English VA, Erika Harlacher. The character is meant to come off as kind of emotionless and flat, which can be boring to watch. However, Harlacher manages to avoid this pitfall, by playing what the character actually DOES. During Violet’s scene with Aiden, Harlacher plays, well, the actions of talking to someone else, reassuring someone else, changing her mind, etc etc.As a result, Violet’s dialogue feels active even though she’s “emotionless”. With all this said, I need to address the elephant on the room. People on Quora said that “being believable” and “sounding clean” can make you come off as boring in an animated production. I imagine the same thing applies to the whole “play actions not emotions” technique many western actors are taught. Furthermore, I’m rooting my entire argument in personal experience. I’m sure I missed or messed up some concepts. If any fellow voice actors or actors hear this paragraph, please let me know.

    Forgot to mention that acting teachers teach you play the desire behind an action as well. For instance, if your character asks a question, you would play the act of asking that question and the underlying reason why the character asked the question.

    Dubbed anime is bad tho, they always sound stilted and all the women sound too old for the roles they play, female enlglish VAs need to learn how to sound like teenagers and not 40 year old women being teenagers...
