Under Pressure (Instructional keyboard tutorial)

Комедия

This is my keyboard cover of Queen's "Under Pressure".
The song seems pretty simple, but there are some underlying parts which most listeners wouldn't hear. I, originally, thought the only keyboard part was the simple, repetitive, descending "5ths" riff. Upon further listening, I found that there are some horn-sounding parts, as well, and an organ+piano bridge.
I've split the lower keyboard into 3 piano zones. I play the eighth note triads in the middle part of the keyboard, but I've transposed the upper "5ths" zone down an octave so that the part is an octave higher up on they keyboard (allowing greater "ergonomic" separation of my wrists...playing with my wrists 12 inches apart for a 4-minute song could get tiring).
I apologize for the distortion in parts and the mess-up toward the end, but you get the general idea of how I've worked out the parts for live performance.
P.S. - You will notice that the low note that I play after they sing "people on streets" has been transposed. I wanted to be able to play this note using the lowest note on my keyboard, because it's the lowest piano note in the song and playing the lowest note on my keyboard made sense (and makes it easy to find).

As I've commented on some of your other videos, I find this instructional cover very helpful and interesting - for more than the obvious reasons. In the verses, you are playing all of the progressions as D A G A. If you listen to the isolated piano tracks from the original recording that are floating around on KZread, you'll hear that sometimes in transition to the A, Freddie raises the E to an F#, effectively turning the transition chord into an F#m. Sometimes, he will play the D A G in a different voicing with a pedal tone A on top, making the progression D5 A G9 (or even D5 A Bm7). I obsess over things like this when I'm leaning a song and agonize over the voicing and how to fit everything in with two hands. Once in a while I need a video like this to show me that it sounds just fine with simpler chords and voicings and that 99+% of the audience won't know the difference. Thanks!

Thanks again for your comments! I, normally, obsess over the small details, but it looks like I didn't pick up on those small variations (I should have seen if there was original isolated piano floating around out there - perhaps from Guitar Hero). I'll have to take a deeper listen, for sure. Those variations definitely make things more interesting (I like the Gadd9, in particular). :-)

goatghost My brain is entirely unable to tease out individual keyboard chords/voicings from a full band mix. Respect to anyone who can.

Actually, when we did this live we had a percussionist on stage who wasn't doing anything, so I had him handle the high fifths so I could play fuller voicings. I liked the result... kzread.info/dash/bejne/gayTw7iefa2nmNY.html

Wow...you guys sound awesome! I've wanted my band to play this for a while, but my bandmates haven't really been into it. Hopefully, someday. BTW...is that you playing a Nord in some of the other videos?

alvies jbass Thanks much! I really appreciate it. I'll have to listen to "Smoke On the Water", sometime. I have always thought of it as a guitar song, but organ is definitely an important part if it. :-)

It's great to hear the attention to detail. The string sound sounds like a filtered lush string sound. What famous string sound is that closed to? Like a CS80 string? Or JP8 ? Also, what type of organ sound is that? Vox? Thank you for the video

Thank you very much!!! Actually, the lush sound is a french horn section patch with lots of reverb. The organ is a B3 simulation. :-)

The last chord is wrong. It's not A9, should be A7. Cause a "G" note is heard clearly in the original ;)

Yes, I believe you are correct! I'm not sure why I heard it as A9. Apparently, it appears to be less complex than I thought...lol Thanks for bringing that to my attention. :-)
