Not the sort of thing that would usually catch my eye but I saw it in the wild and remembered your video. I had to pick it up. Thanks for continuing to share your thoughts.

Reading this is a joy as you have well described; we are very lucky to have access to what is considered the best radio production (broadcast BBC January 1954) via KZread with Richard Burton as First Voice, with the wonderful Hugh Griffith as Captain Cat. Unfortunately, it is abridged. Reports indicate that it was a rushed production in light of the poet’s passing only a few months previously in New York. It is also unclear when it was recorded. In the Dylan Thomas box set of collected recordings (Caedmon Records); while in New York in May 1953, he gave a performance of “Under Milk Wood” with what is reported to be a rather rushed throw-together cast before a live audience (sounds like they were having a great time!). The sound and clarity is iffy at times but having the man himself as First Voice (and as Reverend Eli Jenkins) is special, it appears to be the full work and is worth hearing. It is sad to consider he would be dead by that year’s end.

I haven’t ready anything by Dylan Thomas, and this sounds like something I would enjoy. I am going to try to pick up a copy! Thanks for the great video and for your thoughts, Matthew!

I saw a production decades ago in Chicago which I thought was awful (though it was much touted). I’ve never read it, or even seen it on the page, but I can sure hear Thomas’s voice in that bit that you read.

My father had an LP version of the play with Richard Burton I think it is best to hear “Under Milk Wood“ done as a radio play.
