As a local of 35 years and business owner in town where we have raise our 2 kids here as well I would like to thank putting a few things straight about Alice Springs. Yes we have our problems along with every other town in Australia has. The media beat up this poor town gets is not good. So I thank you for your great words and support you give Alice Springs. It’s what my family call home. It’s so easy for people to take away with them the negativity. Spread your word and help our beautiful town of Alice we call home. Well done👌👌

The crime and the general atmosphere in most NT towns is not the same as the rest of the country, I am a long time NT resident from Darwin and travelling down south or east is such a refreshing change, no screaming mobs, no drunks, no fights in the streets, public toilets that you would actually go into. I like the NT but its definitely on another level. Staying out of town is a good option.

Did you hear what happened in alice this past weekend? Cop run over, 4 bashed and mugged while off duty and a stabbing. It is another lovely country city during the day but if you're a young single bloke like myself it is unfortunately mayhem overnight and in that regard is a bit misleading to say it's safe.

Yes we did, terrible news!! Definitely not misleading at all - did you watch the video and our recommendations on staying safe? We’d suggest not going out at night to avoid any issues - camp outside of town and enjoy the incredible region - we’d still recommend going in during the day, hope that helps - not sure what to recommend for nightlife unfortunately probably not the best place for night life - the Alice Springs brewing co is just outside of town and fantastic and would be a great option to look at 👍

We booked in for 3 nights and ended up staying 10 days. We fell in love with it and became apart of the community. We were invited, welcomed, offered jobs. But at the same time, we seen a new stolen car every single day crashed and burnt out on the side of the road. We stayed away from the centre of town at night, and me as a female didnt walk on my own. However, during the day, I did go out alone and felt fine, although sometimes intimidated but more fear mongered from the news.

Good to see some positive vibes. 25 year local of Alice Springs. It's not all doom and gloom. We have issues, as much as any other city. Look at Townsville... However Alice and the Central Aus region is a hidden gem. 4WD tracks galore, secret waterholes and much more. You just need a local to show you where to go, because maps dont show you the good spots out here!

@TheFeelGoodFamily absolutely not! I want those placed to remain hidden gems. Too many people from interstate who don't do the right thing. They get their tracks closed in other states and then come out here. What they dont realise, is most of our good tracks aren't on parks land. They are on pastrol land. And station owners are not as polite as the government...

So much to see and do in Alice Springs . I can highly recommend the Olive Pink Botanical Gardens for a morning or afternoon outing. They’re close to the centre of town with remarkable flora and fauna. And superb views. We enjoyed morning tea at the little cafe there too. We also enjoyed a very informative visit to the reptile park, also right there in town. I’ve worn long trousers in the outback ever since discovering that they provide the best protection from the many deadly Australian snakes (they have tiny fangs which cannot penetrate fabric).

Great topic you guys, I’ve not long got back from Alice Springs, totally agree with everything you’ve spoken about, being mindful of your surroundings and the people, I said hello to all sorts and smiled, didn’t matter if they don’t respond. I feel that until the people who do the wrong things get to feel the consequences for their actions, nothings going to change, when they banned disciplining children some years ago, this is the end result to some extent. Great scenery out there, I’m looking forward to going back.cheers and thank you Judy

Thanks for, what we think, was a sensible and accurate description of staying in Alice Springs. We stayed at the “G’day Mate” caravan park next door to the Alice Springs Brewery (which was great) and encountered no problems. We explored many aspects of the town and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We even caught up with The Ghan at the railway station. It was great to meet you briefly at Mataranka caravan park as you were leaving, as we have followed you from the start and learnt so much from your commentary. Happy trails, Keith & Margaret

We’ve had two visit to The Alice, and have plans to go back as we’re missing a chunk of the middle of Australia with our adventures. We can only imagine how special the ANZAC Day dawn service would be up on top of that hill. We will certainly keep Temple Bar in mind; we have a preference for being out of most big towns if possible. We’re not sure if she’s still doing them, but in 2016, we did a fab guided walking tour with Linda Wells, a teacher based at Yuendumu, called Foot Falcon Tours. I hope someone is still doing them; it’s a great way to get to know about this amazing place. 😊 Thanks for sharing. Happy travels to you all 😊

I lived in the NT (Darwin) but have spent a bit of time around Alice also over the years. Also taught in a part boarding school… the issues with youth crime are complex. My bestie’s hubby also used to work at Don Dale (the child prison). There are two main reasons for crime up in the whole of NT, although there are many others also - children are not safe to be at home because of insane domestic violence, so take to the streets to get away from it. Places like child detention give the children a bed, 3 meals, aircon, and education. It can be more than they get at home so a lot of kids keep reoffending to have a bed and free food. I have a plan to build some safe houses as a humanitarian project in both Alice and Darwin later this year or next (depending on my funding timing) that will get these kids off the streets, keep them safe, teach them hands on skills and have ppl to care for them in situations where they don’t have a safe home to go to. 🙏

We “The Claydons” were there 5 weeks ago (stayed for 10 days) totally agree with your comments, Alice is as safe as most other towns, this was our second stay. We did see one small fight outside Woolworths, but it was broken up very quickly by Security and the Police. We can highly recommend staying at the Showgrounds, it is fully fenced and locked up at night by a very large electronic security Gate, if you do go out or come back late the gate can be opened with a mobile phone number which is given to you when you book in. Another reason to stay here are the large sites, competitive site costs with plenty of them with power and water. Most important of all you are supporting the local community.

We camped for a week with our van at the G,Day Mate park next to the brewery in July. After all the warnings we had been given about Alice Springs and the risk of going out at night or locking things up etc. we never had a single issue. Loved our stay the old telegraph station, Anzac Hill, drives to places like Standley Chasm, the opportunity to do some proper shopping we even went to our first ever AFL game between The Dockers and Melbourne. We had to show our ID to the police to enter BWS but the policeman was more interested in having a social chat than what we were buying. They were turning a few indigineous people away who were known to them but other indigineous people could enter as long as the had their ID. We will go back there again and it wont be with the same concerns that we had after seeing media reports before we actually got there. I,m sure they have problems at times but so do a lot of other places use common sense about the places you go, listen to advice from locals and make sure that things are locked and you should be fine wherever you are in this country.

G'day Paul & Katie, we agree the Gold Coast & many other areas can be dodgy. July 2023 were only in A.S. for only about 4 hours, we had a couple of issues. We called into a caravan park in town located behind a pub about 1pm the reception was closed & sign on the door directing us to bar for inquiries,in the hotel once inside ... a very confronting experience. We didn't stay at van park and decided to buy fuel as we arrived at the servo there much there was yelling ,people running up the road what staff said the sevo had been ransacked. Just our experiences ,we drove to Uluru and stayed there. Grog& drugs appears to be the problem a reduction of the sale of grog and reduced alcohol? Katherine, Tennant Creek, Kununurra etc no issues. Staying out side A.S. like yourselves next time !! .We might just have been unlucky. Safe travels.

Thank you very much!! Fantastic video that seems balanced and equanimous. Got two questions. We are non-Australians (EU) planning to stay at Alice in mid-August, for two days, before a camping trip around the area. We were planning to do our pre-camping grocery shopping in Woolworths and Coles (near Todd mall), most likely between 4 and 7 pm. But these seem to be problematic areas (though you show some video footage in there, I think) and times. Any suggestions? Second question: we will be staying in a hotel. I understand we definitely want secure off-street parking for the car. Are BBs good choices, or should we aim for a hotel? Any suggestions?

  • @TheFeelGoodFamily

Thank you and you will have a wonderful time exploring the region! 1. Woolie’s is our choice and you can safely park across the road in the main car park and we generally go in for groceries at 4pm and no worries at all! The BWS was opening at 3pm when we were there and can be busy so waiting till 3:30/4pm is a great idea. There are plenty of security and police patrols so we felt very safe. 2. We are not familiar with either of these options so best to phone the hotel/BB and get some honest advice from them. Safe travels and enjoy!

I spoke to the locals there and they tell me they sleep with their keys under their pillows as break ins are common. This is a seriously ridiculous video. No - you don't have to lock your stuff up almost anywhere in Australia - what utter tosh. Secondly telling people not to go out at night - you'll be fine is just thoroughly bizarre. Alice is a genuinely dangerous place to be at night - 100%. The curfew according to the locals has pushed the extreme violence - and it is 100% extreme violence - out into the suburbs. The official warnings, statistics, videos, reports and all basic facts and logic point in a 100% opposite direction to what you are posting.

The problem is we pay people lots of money to come up with ideas so they think that they need to be complicated or they won't be employed. How about the judge tells the kids they can't wear any name brand clothes for 12 months if they offend and if they're caught doing so they go straight to detention simple things like this would have a major impact. Also they need something to do they needs to be some sort of television for them that doesn't have anything to do with this American rap bulshit . And of course the social media company he should be banned from operating in Australia if they don't stop promoting crime . And of course lastly get the parents of the video games and get them acting like adults instead of children themselves
