Uncovering the artwork of Stanley Whitney
He's been painting for more than 50 years, but artist Stanley Whitney - whose bold, colorful canvases offer vibrant hues and deliberately ferocious brushstrokes - is just now getting his first major retrospective (including many works never before exhibited publicly), at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum in Buffalo, N.Y. Correspondent Alina Cho talks with Whitney about the breakthrough that came during his artistic journey.

Thanks for this profile about Stanley Whitney. Whitney's vibrant colors and composition are unforgettable.
My 9 yr old was watching this segment with me this morning. She questioned why this is art when a child could have made this. It triggered a discussion on What is Art? By the end of the hour and a few google searches later, she’s at the table painting her own masterpieces. You never know where inspiration comes from.

Hopefully your child will grow up with a better understanding of what art is

Also. A child couldn't do what Stanley Whitney does.
I'm glad that he is being celebrated in his lifetime...In addition, that he shares his thoughts on his artwork is Priceless...Blessings to him & his family!!!
It’s all about the color. You just experience it. His greatness comes from knowing where to put the colors and in what way on the canvas. If you don’t like it or understand it then that’s ok. Doesn’t mean it’s not great.
'it's about rhythm it's about space so people can think clearer.."- I felt that deeply.
That would look so beautiful in my living room.
Very nice, like Piet Mondrian or Rothko. Like the jazz too!
The King's New Clothes!
Just curious, colored square on canvas....huh?

You don't understand the non-verbal language of art -- you probably don't even know that there IS one!!
I love Stanley's creative confluence of colors in his art.
All abstract art reminds me of the fairytale "The Emperor's new clothes".

I feel sorry for you.
And I do feel better. Thanks, Stanley! 👍✨💕
“Art”
Not a formula, he says - in order to make you think he's not pulling the wool over your eyes.
Um......okay.......bright squares
One of our great living painters? Have we lost our way?

He can paint a two bedroom apartment in one day. You don’t think that’s great?
Thanks for the story ❤
the colors tell the story, the colors create the rhythm.
one of my favorite artists
Well after watching this morning on CBS,i now see that my two granddaughters,9 and 6 can look forward to a rewarding career as artist, they love colors and squares to. If something like this art in the video was done by your average person at home and shown to an Art Critic, they would most likely be laughed at.
There are a lot of unknown artists in this country. We clearly all don't agree what "art" is. ... And I don't really think this is art for me.
Thank you.😊
Please
come on...
My 7 year old niece must be a huge art critic and pointing out the drips, uneven inability to stay within the lines.

My 9 yr old loved the drips and felt it gave them some personality. Kids are too much!

She’s the unfortunate product of the education system that tries to dampen children’s impulses with rules and false constructs of “staying within the lines.”
I can get those free at Home Depot or Lowe’s.. they call them “paint swatches”.
I always feel so stupid when I don't understand what's special about art that looks like you could make it yourself.

Add me to that list, I fail to see the talent 🤷♂️

No need to feel stupid- it’s not academic, it’s completely about the interplay between the colors and how you feel looking at it. If you feel uninterested in it then that’s fine since you’re not meant to understand it.

My kid asked this. I told her ‘you can make this?’ “Yes.” ‘But if you did, you would be copying his style. It would be a copy of HIS art.’ “Oh well I would make circles instead and use different colors.” ‘And that’s why this is Art. You take his IDEA and make it your own. Now his art has made an impression and influenced you.’
Hmmm ...🤔
Sounds like he needed an excuse to escape the draft and to really make sure he did, he left for Italy.

It's great that every ethnic group in our country is represented in our current media. Even the interviewer (Alina Cho) is not Caucasian.

Hey Jane, how hard was it to keep a straight face while calling the crap art? My dog is in a similar class of artist, he uses poop, but the results are remarkably similar.
What is a good painting?
@samadamms3432

In my experience, good art evokes an emotional response from the viewer, therefore, it’s different to each person. These squares don’t do it for me, but some of Pollock’s drip paintings do. Don’t really understand why though.
this is obviously not art

Dude’s a conman.
Sorry but I fail to see the talent in painting colorful squares 🤷♂️🤷♂️
White people acting astounded and thinking that his art is on par with Raphael or Rembrandt. One of them said that "he's the greatest american painter alive"... I like Stanley because even he seems like "what the hell do you mean "what is it about?"... i just painted colorful squares!".
@BlahBlah-em2ed

Yeah, it’s a “white people” thing.
Meh
The interviewer’s questions are idiotic and demeaning. Really cringy.
Looks good but ultimately meaningless. Curators trying to attach meaning to this work is pretty laughable, when the artist himself doesn't even try. He knows it's just decoration.
I like abstract art but I am sorry - not these. These are too easy..
