Uncovering Lisbon's Best: Our Search for the Perfect Pastel de Nata!

#PastelDeNata #Pastries #PortuguesePastries #Lisbon #Portugal
There are so many things to do in Lisbon, but one absolute must-do that belongs on every visitor's list is enjoying a Pastel de Nata, or two. Maybe three. It's the most famous Portuguese pastry. It's not uncommon for a pastelaria (pastry shop) to sell six-packs of them. Pasteis de Nata (plural for Pastel De Nata) are delicious and they're egg tarts, so one might even call them nutritious-ish.
We put three popular Pasteis de Nata spots to the test:
Pasteis de Belem (the original)
Fabrica da Nata (one of the newest)
Manteigaria in the Time Out Market
A note on Time Out Market - there are now a few of these cool food halls around the world, in places like NYC and Montréal. Lisbon's Time Out Market is the original. The concept was created by the editorial team at Time Out Portugal magazine in 2014.

A pastel de nata snd a bica is what many portuguese have for breakfast in the early morning before going to work, eating and drinking them at their local pastelaria/café (pastelaria is a pastry shop).

Nothing like a pastel de Nata and Bica to start the day off right. In reality they're good any time of the day. Counting the days to devour some more. Cheers

We tried those same 3 last fall in Lisbon. My wife and I both ranked them Manteigaria, Pastéis de Belém, and finally Fabrica de Nata, as we like them on the "burnt" end of the spectrum. We ate lunch at Belem in the "big room" farther back from where you sat, and the toasties and other dessert items were delicious and surprisingly inexpensive. Highly recommended for folks who are spending the day touring the sites around the tower, monastery, etc. In Gaia, we tried some of the different flavors at Natas D' Ouro, next to the lower station for the Teleferico. While they were interesting, they were certainly not as good as the others.

@@chrisplusmelissa We tried the chocolate, orange, and lemon, plus they have port and caipirinha flavors. We spent 9 days in Lisbon and Porto, and I don't recall seeing such flavors at any other pastelaria. Curious, have you tried ovos moles? We didn't make it to Aveiro, but I bought some in Porto. Not a fan, LOL!

These are some of my favorite treats to make, and boy howdy are they awesome fresh out of the oven. They are a labor of love to make them from scratch but totally worth it to have them. Plus they are still really good the next day with a quick reheat in the oven.

@@chrisplusmelissa I've been working on dairy and gluten free baking for friends who need it, and I'm trying out a new dairy and gluten free egg tart recipe for Easter when I get back from Ireland. I'll see how it goes and pass it along if it's close to my traditional recipe. Cheers and keep up the great videos!

I'm born , raised and living in Lisbon and I assure you that you can heat (like 30-40 seconds, and then let rest for a minute) a pastel de nata in the microwave and that will do the trick!

You "wasted" your time going to Belém in search of the perfect Pastel de Nata. They don't sell them there, they only sell Pastéis de Belém, which are different and exclusive to them. Everyone else calls them Pastéis de Nata because the Pastéis de Belém name and brand are trademarked. If I had to make a technological analogy, I'd say that Pastés de Belém are proprietary software and Pastéis de Nata are open source software. Well, at least you experienced the taste of the incomparable Pastéis de Belém.🙂

Hi there. Please, don't take this the wrong way but could you avoid calling a Pastel de Nata, Pastel de Nada? "De nada", in Portuguese, means (in a rough translation) "Of nothing". So, when you approach someone at a counter and ask for a couple of "Pasteis de Nada" (or Pasteis of Nothing, if you will) it could lead to a bit of confusion... Other than that it was enjoyable to watch.

Don't add powdered sugar to the pastel de nata, it is like a crime. No portuguese adds it, it is sweet enough as it is. That is just a tourist thing. If you see someone adding powdered sugar it is most likely a tourist. In most portuguese cafes you won't even have it, just cinnamon.
