Uncovering BIG problems with our NEW narrowboat | It's going to cost us a lot to put right
This past week has been a rollercoaster of emotions as we’ve had some very bad news about our narrowboat.
But before we check on our boat at the boatyard where it was lifted out of the water, we’re using our time on land to tackle something we’ve been hiding away.
When we started our boat life journey in 2019, we temporarily locked away all of our belongings. It’s about time we put that right!
If you’re new to the channel, hey! This week’s video is a little different as our boat is having some work done. We’re Jack & Gabby and we live on our new 54ft electric narrowboat on the UK canals, which we are slowly doing up to be our fully solar-powered eco floating home.
Do subscribe to our channel to stay updated with our journey. Thanks so much for watching and we'll see you next time!

ABOUT US
We're Jack and Gabby. Since 2019 we've lived an alternative lifestyle travelling the canals of the UK.
Truthfully, we had wanted to find a slower, more simplistic way of life for a while. But, it was a shock redundancy that gave us the final push. We stumbled across boatlife and haven't looked back since.
Living on a narrowboat is not without its challenges. For example, the lifestyle is fully off-grid so we have to manage our resources such as power and water. For us though, boatlife has provided that 'real' life that we were desperately craving.
If you enjoy this video, we'd love for you to see our other vlogs. We have a playlist of each episode in order here:

I had a survey done last Friday, the hull & 15mm base plate fine but surveyor said think about grit blasting & 2 pack, spent today ringing around, forget shiny paint & fancy interiors , the hull is the most important component. Good luck.

Yup. Two pack sounds good, although I'd worry about how long they claim it lasts. We quite like getting the boat out every couple of years for blacking... It gives the opportunity to give the hull a once over
Only yesterday I had a friends son over in my garage and loading his cage trailer up with all my old computers, electric motors and a lot of small loose bits of metal to clear some space. He took it to the cash for scrap place and got himself $140 although they didn't take the old CRT monitors which went to the tip. Now I have a lot of empty space which is nice for a change. Clearing out is always hard while you do it but feels good later.
I looked around your boat just before it went to you. I took delivery of the boat just after yours. My boat is on a hard standing at moment just about to be fit out by myself. Will check the blacking closely

Oh wow, Beatrix potter, Jemima puddle duck rocks, can’t believe you have vinyl version.. you will make a lot of happy memories playing those stories for little one on trips up and down canal…we have happy memories of listening to Beatrix potter on long car journeys with our little ones..
Over the years I have come to believe that the reason for storage is to eventually realise that you don’t need 90% of the stuff originally stored. It’s an expensive lesson to learn, or realisation to come to, but it happens.
Definitely keep your record albums, get rid of everything else in storage, save money, new baby will bring tons of new and used stuff…remember “ live tiny”..simplify,simplify,simplify, you will be much happier…good luck on the boat, doesn’t look too bad on camera, have seen much worse..Gabby, stay off ladders!!!! Take care of yourselves 😊

What a nightmare! Just what you didn’t need, and so stressful. As you said though, it’s a good thing you found out now and the boat hasn’t been in the water too long in that state. Hopefully it won’t be too long before you can move back on board knowing it’s all sorted out. I know you can’t talk about it, but I’m sure you’re looking at who should be funding the reblacking and other issues which should have been rectified before you bought the boat. Good luck getting it all sorted 😊

Hi you 3 sorry to hear about the barge I suppose you will hear lot's of advice but after having a shop I was always told that goods have to be fit for purpose so I would think you should have some claim against the boat builder so keep 😊
I moved out of a 3 BR house that I owned several years ago and into my Toyota Prius, by choice. The adjustment, while “fun,” was stressful and challenging. I still have a storage unit nowhere near where I am most of the time, so I only go there when I need something in it or want to get something out of it to give away to my children. One of the “things” I have stored is a very large collection of 33 LP vinyl records. Most of them are from the late 50s to the early 70s and I have promised them to one of my daughters…or so I thought, until another daughter said SHE wanted them, too. Being basically a coward and not wanting to “choose” who will get them, in the storage unit they stay. My Prius currently runs well, but in my future somewhere lies the time to replace the large battery that powers this magical car. That is an expense I currently cannot afford, so like you, I am happy that I do not need to find a lot of money just yet. I wish both of you the best; your life has challenges! Always remember, as I am sure you do, that you have each other, no matter what.
Feel for you, silver lining, as you say, you're found out now and not in three years time! Good luck with the decluttering.

You seem to be on top of it even though it came as an unexpected shock. Thoughts and prayers for you that the boat builder does the right thing and reimburses you for whatever it takes to put right..

Normally when you buy just a shell or a part built boat they come as standard with a light coat of blacking as a holding coat so the purchaser can decide what they want to do with it you should never put it straight in the water without putting extra blacking on it

@@thistinylife I have two fav--a very old vinyl of Revolver and also Abbey Road and it would be hard to choose one over the other. I saw Paul McCartney live last year (Orlando FL) and he is still amazing.
Firstly, many congratulations on your wonderful news! Don't be fooled into thinking they're tiny for ages! It'll go so quickly and he or she will be leaving school!! Make the most of every second and don't be in a hurry for them even to be sitting up on their own. 😊 So sorry to hear about the shoddy workmanship, hope it's sorted in your favour. On the subject of records, I've just turned pension age so impossible to choose one! Zappa, Joe's garage, Queen night at the opera and Jackson Five Destiny closely followed by B52s and UB40 cassettes !!! sorry but it's a big desert island with a big dance floor!!! 😃💜
Keeping those records in the storage unit is not good. Most of those units aren’t temperature stable and your records can warp. You should get them somewhere they are in a stable temperature. If you can’t keep them with you, give them to a friend or family member to keep for you until you can make space.
I'm so sorry this happened to you. I really hope that you can get some compensation from the people who were supposed to do proper blacking in the first place. Regarding records - well with major downsizing we got rid of our collection many years ago. However, if I had a record player then I would keep a record of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. It has the capacity to cheer me up even when I'm feeling really down. Of course, I can listen to it on other devices these days but somehow nothing is the same as vinyl!

There are a lot of narrowboat KZreadrs. I'm sure many of them would be happy to warn potential boat purchasers about the clearly negligent vendors who supplied your boat in an inadequate condition. Maybe you should mention that in your negotiations.
My record collection is over 3,000 and I don't say that to boast. Yes I love them but the majority I inherited, unfortunately my personal collection was stolen years ago from our moving van. Anyway, good question not sure of absolute favorite. But one that was stolen was the Star Wars album, I saw the first movie in 1977 and got the album when it was first released. Sounds silly maybe, but I was also involved in the orchestra at the time and we were playing a lot of the songs from the movie as well. It was a blast playing along with the original composition. Anyway, sorry for going on...... Take care and good luck to you.

Oh my! I was watching "The Narrowboat Good Life" channel yesterday, episode 14, in which they go into their first years costs after moving aboard their brand new narrowboat. They had had to have their boat completely reblacked (after less than a year). Take a look and get in touch with them to find out if it's the same boat builder... it could be they are using faulty paint or applying it incorrectly. That is SUCH an impressive collection!! Where do you keep them all?! Do you have a log system to find them?!
The hull has not been properly prepared, and the blacking will continue to come off, unless the job is done correctly. That means going back to bare metal, and someone who knows what they are doing, sorting all the problem areas. Bearing in mind the fact they have been unable to coat the hull properly, there are likely to be numerous other problems, and court action in respect of a full refund is really the only sensible option.
