Unconventional Cucumber Planting Techniques Exposed

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, we're diving deep into the essential steps for planting cucumbers, focusing on bed preparation, choosing the right varieties, proper seed spacing, and the tools and techniques we use to ensure a bountiful harvest.
Bed Preparation:
The foundation of a successful cucumber crop starts with proper bed preparation. We use raised beds created with our tractor-attached row builder. This method ensures our beds are well-formed, allowing for excellent drainage and root development. We also ensure the site selection is perfect by choosing areas with full sun exposure, as cucumbers thrive in warm, sunny environments.
Varieties:
In this row, we're planting pickling cucumbers, which are perfect for making delicious homemade pickles. Later in the season, we'll be planting longer varieties of cucumbers, which have different growing requirements. Focusing on pickling cucumbers now allows us to stagger our planting and harvest times, ensuring a continuous supply of fresh produce.
Seed Spacing:
Proper seed spacing is crucial for healthy cucumber plants. We use a dibble wheel to accurately space our seeds. This tool ensures each seed has enough room to grow without competing with its neighbors. For pickling cucumbers, we recommend spacing seeds about 12 inches apart within the row. This spacing promotes healthy plant growth and maximizes yield.
Tools Used:
Kit String for Straight Rows: Using a kit string helps us achieve perfectly straight rows, making planting and maintenance much easier.
Dibble Wheel for Plant Spacing: This tool is indispensable for ensuring our seeds are evenly spaced, which is key to healthy growth and high yields.
Fertilizer: We use a 15-15-15 fertilizer to provide our cucumber plants with the balanced nutrients they need. This fertilizer mix ensures strong root development, lush foliage, and abundant fruit production.
Unique Trellising Method:
Our unique trellising method involves using tomato cages laid on their side. This technique supports the cucumber vines as they grow, keeping the fruits off the ground and reducing the risk of disease and pests. It also makes harvesting easier and more efficient.
Step-by-Step Guide:
Bed Preparation: Use a tractor-attached row builder to create raised beds. Ensure the site has full sun exposure.
Site Selection: Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil.
Spacing and Planting: Use a kit string to mark straight rows. Use a dibble wheel to space seeds 4-6 inches apart.
Fertilizing: Apply a 15-15-15 fertilizer according to the package instructions to provide essential nutrients.
Trellising: Lay tomato cages on their side within the row to support the cucumber vines.
By following these steps, you'll be well on your way to growing a thriving cucumber crop. Whether you're an experienced gardener or just starting out, these tips and techniques will help you achieve great results.

I am glad you have a way so you guys can have a garden. I have never lived in a big city, so I am not sure about communal gardens but I am sure they have something. Fortunately for us, space has never been an issue. Thanks for the response and good luck with your next video. I am thinking Everybody likes pickles… just saying...Take care

We have a Kubota L4300 (4 Wheel drive) and we use it for the “more difficult” (moving round bales for the cows, row building, Tractor mounted tilling, pulling potatoes, hilling corn etc.) farm work around here. Just seems like a waste for 100-foot rows, but maybe your right I will think about it. Critters are a real issue this year, I suspect we will be fighting with them all season. Thanks for watching
