Still helpful in 2019. You gave me the courage to go in there and take things apart.

Awesome video! I've never disassembled the extruder assembly before and am brand new to 3D printing but after watching you go through the process I feel confident in my ability to tackle this issue in the future. Thanks for the great video quality and the close up of the parts as you work. (FYI, you have maketbot instead of makerbot. I was still able to find it from searching Makerbot, but just a heads up in you wanted to correct it.)

Brilliant! Thank you so much for sharing your precious experience which just solved my problem as well. One side note: when re-assembling, make sure the fan wires don't get in the way of the fans especially the front one.

For anyone else stumbling onto this video 7 years later, all you need to do is remove the 2 fan screws as shown & simply unplug the connector on the back of the stepper motor/extruder & remove it instantly for accessing clog. Then heat up the block & use a needle/pin to pierce the clog & pull it out. This video is more applicable to those who have upgraded the extruder to an aluminium one instead of stock plastic, the top shroud interferes with the plunger & ends up causing slippages as the temperature increases. All you need to do there is chop of the piece of plastic underneath the shroud thus sitting flush on your metal extruder gear/plunger replacement.

I know it may look scary with all the pieces hanging out like it just exploded, but this process was actually extremely simple, and I was easily able to unclog my printer (which is wonderful, because I really don't have time to send in my extruder under warranty, since I am using this for a robotics competition). Thus far, no further jams have occurred.

I think the spacer was that black plastic rectangle you showed in the video, which you have doubtless found by now.Something that I have learned to do, through bitter experience, is to have a tray that I lay everything on during an operation like this, so I know things can't get lost. However hindsight is 20/20 vision as they say. Still a very good video to watch

Also, if you have the availability of tools, an allen wrench (2.5 mm) with a "ball end" is handy for removing the two screws on the left, that holds the side fan in place. The screw heads need to be approached slightly from an angle and the ball end wrench will keep from wearing the screw heads prematurely.

thanks, big help, however i noticed that you only ned to unscrew the 2 first bolts, then you can wiggle the motor off the back

What do you do if your extruders are not heating properly

Maybe its clogged because your extruder fan is mounted backwards.

One of the more clever things MakerBot support said to me on the phone, when I was having a problem, was "read me what it says on the front fan" I did, and then support told me it should be turned around so the writing's not visible. When the writing's hidden, the airflow correctly blows from the front toward the heat sink. It does make a difference.
