Uncle Roger "exposes" Asian culture in a good relatable way. I love the tiny details like 'smacking remote when battery runs out'... that's just pure truth. And the accent? I love accents!!!! asian, latino, french accents,--- it makes one authentic. Geeeesh people are easily offended sometimes.

I think Uncle Roger is just funny by sharing less serious, cute side of a lot of Asians. It's so nice how I'm a Filipina but still can relate to most of the lines. And yes, Filipinos have to follow the Western standard of accent. Although, I think people should just accept the cultural differences and embrace it. It's never bad to have a thick accent.

You both are talented and fuiyoh! I am actually born and raised in mainland China and basically have no experience living abroad (hopefully going to Europe for further study within a few years). However I just found that Uncle Roger is such a relatable character for his accent, values, belt phone case, leg on chair, the HAIYA which is similar to that in Cantonese Hakka etc.. I’d got no idea about how the Chinese’s life is like abroad before but now I know. Perhaps some are suffering those racist issues, some’ve already got whitened unintentionally for easier life of course while some are still proud of their ancestors’ culture. Anyway it just reminds me that we have so many various life experiences which are all valid in their context, and I would really love to explore the diversity in Asians’ life around the world, and hopefully visit Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore and Chinatowns in different countries. I hope this comment could be fully understood although I don’t speak fluent English. Like you guys sharing your in-depth ideas. 爱你们!Nigel and sweetie Evelyn!

As a Malaysian-Chinese, we are just flexible and very used to code switch our accents automatically to adapt to our audience or the environment. We can speak with Malay & Indian accents with our Malaysian friends, even when we speak in Chinese, I have to switch to different Chinese accents based on who am I speaking with, e.g. Mainland Chinese, Taiwanese Chinese, Malaysian Chinese, etc. Western-born Chinese may feel more offended but Malaysians are born and raised in a mostly-peaceful (put those racist politicians who are intended to start a race war aside) diverse environment, we feel more comfortable and closer to play with our accents among our friends from different ethnicities. A lot of Asians, especially Malaysians are feel relatable when we saw Uncle Roger because that character is exactly displaying the common traits of the middle-aged uncles/aunties in our community. They are really sassy, arrogant, funny, judgemental and can be a bit savage too, as well as thinking themselves knowing more things than us (young people) because they are older XD

This was a great episode, thank you. As a native San Franciscan and American (of Chinese descent), I recognize all of the discussed issues. I love the Uncle Roger character, because it’s also familiar to me having spent a good part of my youth growing up around Chinatown. I can hear Nigel’s Asian accent even when speaking like he normally does, but shame on me for being “surprised” his English is as good as it is, being that he grew up in Malaysia. My friends from Singapore also showed me I shouldn’t assume their ability to speak English fluently is compromised just by virtue of having been raised in Asia. As for Evelyn, I’m MOST surprised she’s from Sweden - she sounds 100% American-born. Incredible. ;-)

Hi, Ive been following your content for quite a while and find it enjoyable and educational (I and a number of my friends have a strong appreciation and interest for south asian culture) I think people who are intelligent enough are able to see the comedy for what it is and the accents as a celebration of the diversity, I think Uncle Rogers accent is a way of reclaiming that aspect of that culture, It in many ways reminds me of what Sanjeev Bhaskar did for the indian community in the 1990s with "goodness gracious me". I think in many ways because we know it is comedy when we enter that arena (ie pod cast comedy club etc) we should expect roasting and that direct critical lens, people with complaints are usually people with personal insecurities and usually cant see the big picture. As a northern english white guy from a poor background I find that some of the things you talk about about your background have similarities (I grew up with some Uncle Roger character types). personally I think accents are important to make characters whole, the uk has tons of regional accents and dialects there have been famous Brums and Scousers where their accents have been a big part of their act (Actually historically the BBC would not allow regional accents on radio or T.V. which is partly why ITV was created which was created from regions in the uk, also for a long time theatre companies would use birmingham accents to represent thick people and yorkshire or cornish accents to represent peasants and farmers).

About the accent thing: I see where people are coming from, but I don't think it's Uncle Roger to blame. He's literally a younger version of my dad/uncles right down to the phone case lmao. I think it's white people not understanding people of the same ethnicity can have different accents due to a whole bunch of factors like diff life experiences/situation/different languages/who's in the room. Like, I'm Chinese American living in the UK and no one thinks I can speak English upon first glance (STOP IT!) and even I have a sliding scale of how "Chinese" I sound depending on whether I'm with friends or at work, etc. I don't share the sentiments of people bothered by the Uncle Roger accent, but I believe part of the knee-jerk reaction is the fear that it'll feed into Asian face = an Asian accent (hello, Hollywood, you are guilty), similar to what Evelyn said. Some of us gonna sound like auntie Hersha or Evelyn and some of us won't. I hope that they can see the Uncle Roger is coming from a place of love and his existence isn't trying to diminish the fact that Asians, esp. diaspora Asians, with more Westernized accents also exist (that's what Hollywood be doing, STOP IT). Also yes Nigel I had that same experience talking smth Asian with a group of white people. I was just enjoying my boba and someone said "I don't understand why someone would pay this much for tea" unbelievable.

I think what makes Uncle Roger so powerful--beyond reclaiming our Asian-ness--is encouraging this type of dialogue. Part of what makes the accent uncomfortable for Asians in the West is here people with Asian accents are subjugated and othered--made fun of, shamed, or thought of as lesser-than. At the same time, in Asian countries the "accent" is part of everyday vernacular and completely normal. Props to this podcast for bridging perspectives between Asians brought up in Asia and the Asian diaspora!

Omg the “stop it” sounds exactly like my mom. Actually, my mom got in the car while I was listening to this, at the point where Nigel kept saying “stop it” and she cracked up 😂

Keep up the occasional serious discussions! I really enjoyed it. I’ll admit, I initially wasn’t going to tune into this podcast because I thought it was purely comedic based on Asian cultural observation humour, but I really like how some issues are actually discussed!

After seeing the Uncle Roger character and watching Nigel as himself I have really enjoyed learning about his culture and all attributes of Asian life. Very interesting and the comedy aspect has brought happiness to myself during this Pandemic and series of lockdowns. Keep up the great work. Big love to both of you

An uncle Roger cartoon would be so cool! Everyone always complains about everything. You both are fantastic. Uncle Roger is not offensive people are just really sensitive about everything.

What amazes me is seeing the huge difference with uncle roger sub numbers and the small number of people complaining! I think that should say it all. Keep up the great stand-up, uncle roger and the wonderful podcast. I wish I had found y’all earlier. Thank you both. You are appreciated.

Anyone who takes issue with Uncle Roger's accent, must also take issue with black comics doing black characters and white comics doing white characters... which means they dont understand the concept of humor. I hope you dont let these hypocritical detractors stop you from releasing these incredibly funny videos. ❤💪🍻

I just watched a video with a white guy who grew up in Malaysia and he literally sounds like Uncle Roger. Kinda mind blowing. As an Asian growing up in the west, a white person doing the accent always seemed racist, but if a non-Asian grew up with that accent, you can’t call it racism...it's literally how they learned to speak.
