I have been waiting for an eternity for the ultimate Dollar collection. Thank You Thereza & Cherry Red. The packaging starts the journey before you have even opened the box, when you do, you are presented with a superb booklet giving lots of information about the group, songs & videos. Then you have the excitement of choosing what you want to hear first...for me it was the DVD, i loved Dollar for the visual journey they took me on as well as the songs and the videos are just superb. Equaly, the music speaks for itself. This is one collection that will surely satisfy the most demanding Dollar fan.

It’s taken 40 years to get the Carrere and WEA recordings together, even though WEA distributed Carrere in the 1970s. Thereza doesn’t hold up the Shooting Stars album, but that one is particularly significant as it’s the first time the original artwork has been available since before Carrere repackaged/renamed/resequenced it in 1982 as The Very Best of Dollar. The 1979 artwork is back at last. Even though I had all the albums, I got this as I love it when labels do this and put everything into nice neat packages. Really well put-together, and it’s a great quality presentation.

Have to say this is a brilliant box set with tons of goodies on it and nothing much to gripe about, but just like Thereza mentioned so glowingly, its those brand new "vintage" 12" extended mixes that are by far the highlights of the whole thing (and its not often u can say that for a box set - more often than not you wish they hadn't bothered with the new remixes!) Who remixed these new vintage classics? I dont know. But it sounds like a daunting challenge to try to come up with some extended pop perfection that improves upon the pop genius of Trevor Horn at his 80s peak, but amazingly they somehow did it - every time! They're all just *perfect* - a wonderful joy for these old ears & everything you always hoped for when you placed your latest unheard 12"er on the turntable back in the 80s. i.e. they're neither just longer versions with barely any real discernible difference to the originals e.g. just a repeated chorus or two to stretch it out a bit. Nor on the other hand endlessly repeated lines that makes you think the records got stuck, or the original has been so completely mangled and chopped up or swamped by an inappropriate/jarring modern dance beat that it either grates on your ears or you can barely believe its the same track (e.g. 12"ers of Yes' 'Owner Of A Lonely Heart' & 'Leave It' both spring to mind for prime examples of that - 100% weird!) And thankfully, god forbid, these aren't "2019-style" remixes - which would have essentially meant (a) making them shorter to try to cater for today's shortened attention spans, (b) auto-tuning the vocals to remove any discernible character from them, (c) replacing the music with a relentlessly dull repetitive new non-tune, and finally (d) plastering the obligatory who-has-the-slightest-clue-what-theyre-ranting-on-about-"guest rap" all over it that actually makes you glad the track had been mercifully cut shorter! No, thankfully Cherry Red had the good sense to avoid all that horror and these are ALL exactly what good 12"ers should be - i.e. an inventive rearrangement of the original elements that allows each vocal & instrumental track space to shine & pleasantly surprise the listener and yet it all still "f-l-o-w-s" just as perfectly as the originals. I bet these would have all been played to death in the discos of 1982/3/4 if they'd been 12"ers back then. Sadly no truly self-respecting discotheque DJ cared for spinning many regular 7"ers. Ah well definitely an essential purchase for your next retro 80s disco. If I were at Cherry Red I'd suggest sticking out a promo EP of them for radio stations etc and surely reap a load more extra sales, or maybe an EP to promote the standalone double-disc version of the Dollar album they must surely be planning soon? Or even a single CD sampler of all the best new mixes in the box which might appeal to purchasers of the Greatest Hits CD? Perhaps in very-slightly-tweaked and renamed versions (named after the genius who remixed them rather than the year?) to keep the titles sounding current. Unfortunately its just human nature that very few will care for a mix labelled last year, no matter how close to pop perfection it is!

David looks quite different and a bit sad. Quiet too. Not like him.
