Ben's Watch Club tends to cover affordable watches like Seiko, Timex, Casio, Citizen, MVMT, Vincero, Bulova, Orient, Hamilton, and more. We rarely feature luxury watches like Rolex, Patek Philippe, Breitling, Tag Heuer, Tudor, Grand Seiko, Cartier, Omega, Audemars Piguet, or Hublot due to their price.

Affiliates are no longer permitted to use Amazon web pages in their videos, and we can’t afford to get booted, as it makes up a large portion of our revenue. Actually the idea of a 24 hour watch that only marks the hours is not new and I am quite sure that this type of watch has been produced even by some expensive brands that at the moment I can't recall (Meistersinger?) . @@mountainhobo ok, slightly higher beat then. To be honest I find it only to be a gimmick in this watch, since the second hand is prone to stuttering. You don't get a very nice constant sweep anyhow. I do like the AM 0171 with the Miyota much better. Same watch, other more reliable basic movement, lower Herz, but less stutter. Also comes in different colours. The silver-white sunburst one is quite stunning in all its simplicity. When I bought it, it was 45 Euros on Amazon. It was quite the package for the money. Import laws (EU) have changed however and prices might very well have gone up for the EU market.

    "Genuine leather" is actually a leather industry term for low quality leather, bottom of the cut, heavily processed and it doesn't contain anything from the original hide's grain.

  • @MaximRecoil

    @MaximRecoil

    2 жыл бұрын

    "Genuine leather" can refer to any type of leather. The subcategories of "genuine leather" are "full grain," "top grain," and "split." The reason that the term "genuine leather" is associated with low quality leather is because when companies make products from the cheap/weak lower splits, they can't call it top grain (top grain is also split leather, but it's an upper split, therefore good quality) and they definitely can't call it full grain, so they have a choice between "split leather" and "genuine leather," and these days they usually choose the latter because they think it sounds good. "Full grain" is leather that includes the outer surface of the hide, the part that hair/fur grew from when it was on the critter. It may be a layer cut off the top or it may be the entire hide thickness, which, in the case of cowhide, is quite thick and would only be used for something like shoe soles. "Top grain" is an upper split that doesn't include the outer surface, but it's still high enough to be in the grain area of the hide. "Split" overlaps "top grain," but it also includes the garbage splits in the lower non-grain areas of the hide. "Genuine" overlaps everything, but when the term is used by itself by manufacturers it nearly always refers to a crappy lower non-grain split. There's also "bonded leather," which is even worse than the lowest genuine leather split. It is like particle board or Spam, i.e., ground-up leather scraps that are pressed/formed/glued into a sheet of leather-like substance. It's commonly used for cheap furniture and cheap Bible covers.

    While the starking has sapphire and is decently built, their in-house Hi-beat movement is really quite sloppy. Mine works and keeps decent time, but as was stated in the video, the rotor is very loud and using the crown to set time or date feels a lot like using an unsynchronized manual gearbox that has been driven to hell and back. I do not think the watch will function for very long. Also, the watch repair channel did pull the movement apart and it was clearly poorly built in unclean environment, and I have heard many cases of them arriving DOA. Would not recommend getting one, even though it is a high-beat automatic with sapphire at a very low price.

    The movement inside the starking is something quite curious. It is basically slight modified DG2813, which is a derivative of the Myota 8205 movement design. However it is 28800 BPH and outer dimensions are the same as the ETA 2824. Even the hand pinions have the same dimensions as an ETA classic.

    I think the weirdest Chinese watch I own is a Temeise... it is an actual full chronograph but instead of hands there are spinning coloured turbines, however a design oversight meant they forgot to put a reference on dial and turbines so good luck trying to actually understand the chrono turbines or the 24hr wheel. What else is weird it is bigger than an Invicta Bolt II Zeus Magnum, seriously super heavy and I got mine in the gold chrome and it looks like I got some rappers arm when I wear it. Its bigger than my Invicta Russian Diver or my TW Steels Chrono...

    I have an anticlockwise watch I bought on amazon about two years ago. It's the only anticlockwise watch I could find, and it was about 20 USD. It's called the 'Time Fly Back'. It's alright looking, like a basic dress watch. The band is garbage but I've yet to put a decent band on it. She's a funky little watch and the anticlockwise feature turns heads when people look at it.

    There were some stores here in Norway that sold anticlockwise wall clocks around 25 years ago. I think the point was that you could hang them in the bathroom and watch them through the mirror. Almost bought one because they were so weird, but they disappeared quickly, so probably not too popular.

    I have to say, some of the downsides of some watches aren't necessarily downsides. Some people prefer simplicity over a bunch of notches and bezels. Also, that cheap Casio is exactly the sort of thing I would wear at work back when I was stocking shelves - it has a cheerful enough look to it and is thin enough to not snag on things too often while working in tight spaces, and it comes in at a price point where you wouldn't be upset at breaking it or scuffing the heck out of it within two years.

    Lancaster looks pretty decent. As to one-hand watch - it's a 12 hours watch, one-hand watches only have one (hour) hand but more indexes (every 5 minutes) so that it's easier to tell the time. Since hour hand moves so slowly, it takes 12 hours to complete the circle. And there are more such watches - you can check Luch watches or more prestigious MeisterSinger watches (e.g. Pangaea Date PMD 901 or Lunascope Automatic Moonphase Date LS908G_SG03)

    I've got a Skmei touch watch (same module, slightly different, more retro-looking case). Cost me about £12. I think it's a fun little watch, but you're right: the touch response is a bit finnicky, the hand logo is annoying (might try removing it with solvent) and the animation before displaying is pretty annoying. But hey, it looks retro and it is bright.

    I know this comment is super late to the party, but I HAVE to talk about that Skmei touch watch. The "button" is at the bottom of the screen, which is why it can sometimes seem unresponsive; you're just not tapping the correct spot (unless the watch is dead or really dirty). You set the time by holding down the "button" until it enters the time-setting mode. Then you can set all the values one at a time, holding the "button" whenever it's set correctly. It's not super intuitive, but once you figure out there's only one button, you can usually figure it out. Or just read the instructions that came with it, haha. Anyway, the reason I know all this is that I've used strikingly similar watches in the past. As in I'm almost 100% sure the watches I used have the exact same movement and display that this one does. They're sold by Dakota Watch Company, a chain of shopping mall kiosks in America that does watch repair services and also sells their own watches. The ones that (probably) use this movement and display are sold under their Fusion brand. They're little one-piece silicone/rubber watches sold in various colors, and the material covers the display. It looks like a rubber bracelet, but when you press the "button" (which is much more responsive, I think), the LED display shines through the material and shows the time. I'm not gonna act like they're revolutionary, but for $15 mall watches, I think they're neat. Probably better for kids than adults, like you said. I definitely think it's a better use of that movement and display than the Skmei; I see no reason to use cheap-ass metal when rubber or plastic would both look better and make more sense for the price.
