Unboxing the Pro-Ject X-Tension 9 turntable

Ғылым және технология

In this video we'll be unboxing the Pro-Ject X-Tension 9 turntable, set it up and mount an Ortofon Quintet Black MC cartridge on the EVO tonearm. This is for one of our lucky customers, and we offer this service free, for anyone who buys their turntable from us.
This video turned out to be quite long, but it does take about 90 minutes from opening the crate, to having a fully functional turntable that's ready to play.

This the most extraordinary video capture of a turntable set-up that I have ever viewed - bar none!!! It is brilliantly done with close-up, in-focus sequences, system at large sequences, a rear panel wiring capture in perfect focus, and the culmination of the entire process with a virtual playback experience. Wonderful share!!!

I simply LOVE this turntable. I want to get it with the S-shape arm. The walnut finish is stunning and there's a mahogany matte finish as well. It's gorgeous! Thanks sooo much for posting this video!

I’ve just ordered this deck along with the Project Tube Box DS2. Can’t wait to get it, but I suppose I’ll just have to.

Hi David, I've just ordered the Project Tube Box DS2 and seriously considering this record player too! Care to share your experience so far? I take it you're using it with the Quintet MC Black

Beautiful table. how does it compare to the Xtension 9 with the S-shape arm ? in your opinion how much of a sonic difference does the extra weight and tonearm length make ?

Beautiful table. how does it compare to the Xtension 10 ? in your opinion how much of a sonic difference does the extra weight and tonearm length make ? I assume you've setup a few X10s too. How about RPM 10 also ?

I own an Xtension10 and the key differences I could see were, the 9 has 3 feet vs 4, the platter is taller and heavier on the 10, but the biggest difference is the Evolution carbon arm is shorter on the 9. The 10 also has inbuilt electronic speed control that can be adjusted in 0.1 increments. I haven't heard the sound on the 9 vs the 10 all I know is that my 10 sonically and visually blew my old Roksan Radius out of the water, chalk and cheese. When I demoed some of my sample LP's it had staff and customers gathering to listen, in fact one staff member said he had never heard a turntable sound so good compared to other Project and other makes they sold. The 9 I think is a smart move by Project, its a decent entry into their higher end turntables without the hefty price jump, and I reckon you are getting 70% of what is in the Xtension 10 component wise. The tonearm on the 9 for me is where the bigger compromise is made, visually the 9 looks a tad stubby, maybe thats a good thing or not, but the Evolution 10 carbon arm is a leap up from the 9 with better bearings and will be more compatible with higher end cartridges, for example the Ortofon cadenza range etc.

Strange that you put the platter on with bare hands but at the end of the video you have on the supplied gloves.

Hej. Har du en ide om, hvordan den vil fungere med en Ortofon Om Super 40?

It’s a beautifull deck! But i don’t like the belt drive concept. The whole thing is dependent on a piece of rubber to turn the platter?

It works very well, though Belt drive is a very proven technology. It think it might just be how the small piece of rubber drives the large platter, that can look a bit strange. I'm a direct drive proponent myself though.

Does that counterweight stay in the place where you dial it into? I've heard that on this model stylus force drifts, and the counterweight is susceptible to moving if touched. Does that happen if you set it up in the shop and the customer drives it home? A video on the model with the S-shaped arm would be welcomed.

We haven't had any complaints with the counterweight accidentally moving, on the ones we've sold. This particular model was partly unassembled again, before we drove it out to the customer and did the final install. We don't have any of the higher end models with the S-shape arm at the moment. If we do get one, I'll make sure and try to make a video of it :)

I feel a little sorry for people who have never gotten to do what you just did. It's exactly what's missing in digital (boring) audio.

late here. looks great , no ? about that. umm $ 4000. + .... minor but real question - the 4 tiny wires connect to back of cartridge - are they. easily replaceable. ? they are decidedly NOT durable. companies should have gotten together on a simple plug in design, I know Technics I think did, maybe 40 years ago but for whatever stupid reason it didn't catch on.> I broke one of the tiny clips wires , instantly made a sort of expensive T'table ( for me ) worth about 2 cents. high fi shops / elect. repair have gone the way of Dinosaur

Yeah, I agree that the SME type headshell solution that basically plugs directly into the tonearm is superior in terms of durability. Re-wiring a tonearm is an absolute horror.
