Hey guys, in this video, I'll be unboxing the Chase Sapphire Reserve, comparing the Sapphire Reserve to my other metal credit cards (Amex Gold, Venture X, and Chase Sapphire Reserve), and letting you know why I upgraded my Chase Sapphire Preferred to the Sapphire Reserve. If you've been wondering "Is the Chase Sapphire Reserve worth it in 2023?", or "Is the Chase Sapphire Reserve right for me?", then this video will hopefully give you a better understanding of who the Sapphire Reserve is really for while demonstrating the value it can provide you. The Chase Sapphire Reserve is one of the most valuable premium travel credit cards on the market today, and even with just one travel booking a year, I'd argue this card is well worth the $550 annual fee.

    With the transition between connectors, there are still gonna be some hiccups (like Chase rn for a lot of folks). However, that's exactly what they're working on with the new version of the app. If you want direct support, their help page in the app will direct you to the right place! But if that doesn't work, reach out to me through Discord and I can send you in the right direction.

    I've always really liked the clean look of the Sapphire Reserve, and yours certainly didn't disappoint. It definitely makes a lot of sense in your situation why you applied for the CSR, especially with the lounge access most closely aligning with the options that you have in Austin, at your home airport. Great video as always Spencer!

    I don't have either, though I do have a Venture X card that I got in September 2023 with an elevated 90k SUB (which I recently hit). I am looking to apply for the CSR within the next month since I plan on traveling on two 2-2.5 week vacations (one trip from Chicago to Europe round-trip business class, one domestic trip) next year and in 2025. I am a frequent Lyft user and would get at least $100 in value from that credit alone based on my annual spend. Having access to the Lyft bikes (Divvy in Chicago, Citibike in NYC, etc.) is also a nice perk. If I spent $5000 on travel through the card directly from the airline/hotel (reasonable with the business class flights), I would hit the $105 in extra value w/TPG's valuations based on 2.05 cents/point and the 3x multiplier. Add in the Priority Pass restaurant access (in case the lounges are overcrowded), and I would easily recoup the $205 extra in annual fees (w/CSP hotel credit) between the cards, and would probably gain around $25-$100 in value for the CSR with those credits alone. The Venture X is definitely a great card on it's own, as the 2x in miles on regular spend is great for non-bonused categories, and the card is basically free (even paying you money) with the $300 travel portal credit and 10k miles anniversary bonus. The only way I would lean more toward the CSP is if the SUB is significantly higher - right now, my local branch is offering an in-branch CSP SUB of 70k w/$6,000 in spend over 6 months (60k w/$4,000 min. spend over 3 months), while the CSR SUB is the standard 60k w/$4,000 in spend over 3 months. The banker did mention that Chase usually offers an upgraded in-branch SUB over the Thankgiving/Christmas season, so I am holding off on applying for a few more weeks.

Lock in a high offer on the CSP, product change to the CSR after a year or two if you think it'll give you more value, after 48 months, downgrade the Sapphire card to a Freedom card and reapply for another Sapphire. Slick card, congrats again! Definitely want the CSR! I can’t wait to upgrade from the CFU next year. If I upgrade (product change) to the CSR, do I have to keep it a year before I can downgrade again? I’m at 5/24 but won’t be in 2025, so just wanting to time it out! Love your content! - Ivan

I’m trying to figure out the best way to use the $300 travel credit annually. I think I’m going to use the $300 travel credit with the free night certificate on the WOH card for a nice two night stay at Hyatt💫

That's a good problem to have though! 😆

Let’s say I use the Dashpass credit ($180… 120 membership+ 60 monthly credit) and use the full experience credit of $100 from LHRC…. Is it safe to say the card will pay me $30? Thanks!

    Chase as other card issuers, has random statement credits. We have received about $100 from those this year also. Pretty nice seeing a resturant or gas station you use offering between 5% to 20% for a purchase I'm making anyway.

    Thanks man! In reality, the credits aren't what I'm banking on to make back the $250 effective annual fee. One trip a year through the portal will likely effectively make up that value for me, but the lounge access already pushes me over that threshold before that in all honesty. It just depends on how much you value those things and how much you'll use em!

    There are rarely elevated SUBs with the CSR - the last publicly-available one was 80k in October - November 2022. To get the standard 60k SUB, you would have to downgrade the CSP first to a no-fee Chase card (i.e. Chase Freedom Unlimited, Chase Freedom Flex) before applying separately for the CSR.

  • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial

    @SpencerJohnsonOfficial

    9 ай бұрын

    The comment above really summarized it perfectly! In general, people apply for the CSP over the CSR because it has higher elevated offers, and you can get the bonus on a new Sapphire card every 4 years. You just have to downgrade your current Sapphire card before doing that. Also, just be aware that if you reapply for the CSP, you won't be able to product change to the CSR for a year. If you want to go straight to the CSR you can definitely do that, you'll just have to stick with the 60k bonus most likely.

    @@SpencerJohnsonOfficial I am looking to apply for either the CSR or the CSP within in the next few weeks, as I plan on buying round trip business-class tickets by the end of the year from Chicago to the Netherlands for a 2-2.5 week trip next summer. I enjoy flying long-haul trips in business/first class, and that purchase will knock out at least 90% of the $4,000 minimum spend (if not 100%) I have vacation time saved up as well, and plan on spending 2-2.5 weeks as well in the US Southeast, visiting Atlanta, New Orleans, and Memphis, flying economy/premium economy to Atlanta and using Amtrak's City of New Orleans train for the segments from New Orleans to Memphis and Memphis to Chicago (and possibly the Crescent from Atlanta to New Orleans). I already have the Venture X card, so the CSR vs. CSP additional benefits come down to: - 3x vs. 2.1x on travel (factoring in anniversary bonus) - 10x vs. 5.1x on Lyft + Lyft Pink membership - Priority Pass restaurants and spas (not included with Venture X) - Additional insurance protections (not factored into calculations) With the business-class flights and other travel, I will easily hit $5,000 in spend, netting me at least $92.25 extra in rewards points with the CSR, factoring in the CSP anniversary bonus (effectively 2.1x on travel with CSP) vs. the 3x on travel with the CSR. I also use Lyft a few times per month, and spend about $50-$60/month, so with the Lyft Pink membership, I would save $30 @ $600/year with the 5% discount, and earn an additional $60.27 in points at 10x vs. 5.1x on CSP, netting me just over $90. I also use Divvy occasionally, which is a bikeshare network owned by Lyft. I would value the Lyft Bikes/Divvy membership at $30, as using the free classic bikes would save me from having to call 1-2 Lyfts/year when the bus doesn't show up as schedule. My total net from the Lyft Pink would then be around $120. Just from those two categories alone, I would get an extra $212+ out of the CSR vs. the CSP. Factor in one airport restaurant visit @ $28 at a Priority Pass restaurant (if the lounges are at capacity, which seems to be more common), and the minimum of $240 in value > $205 in differences in annual fees ($250 w/CSR, $45 w/CSP & hotel credit). The CSR seems like a good choice for my needs, if the SUB is equal to the CSP. The CSP tends to have elevated bonuses more often - right now, my local Chase bank branch is offering a total SUB of 70k w/$6,000 of spend over 6 months on the CSP (60k w/$4,000 of spend over 3 months, w/additional 10k for total $6,000 of spend over 6 months), while the CSR is the standard 60k w/$4,000 of spend over 3 months. Given that the value I would get with the CSR is only slightly more than the CSP per year, an additional SUB of 10k miles on the CSP (roughly $205) would be more than sufficient to get me to sign up for the CSP over the CSR. I can always track my expenses in Year 1, and migrate to the CSR in Year 2 if my spending justifies the move.
