Unboxing the Axminster Craft AC305WL Woodturning Lathe and SK 100 chuck

Please watch: "live burl bowl"
• live burl bowl -~-
This is a very basic unboxing and first inpressions review of the Axminster Craft AC305WL Woodturning Lathe and the Axminster Woodturning Starter Kit SK100 Chuck Package.
Both of these products where a gift from a charity called The Leonardo careres trust and came as a package deal straight from Axminster tools.
At first glance i found the AC305 WL lathe to be a very sturdy and a well made peice of machinery .
The only real issue that i came across is that the lathe came with the wrong instruction manual and a few scratches to the paint in various places .
in my opinion the Axminster Woodturning Starter Kit SK100 Chuck Package is everything that you need for most woodturning projects, The quality of the chuck itself is very high and well packaged.

    The lock device should never be used to change things in the Chuck. It is for indexing work and if like me you don’t intend to do this type of work, do not install the insert in the top. If used to change chuck etc it may damage the lathe. The spanner’s are for changing tools etc in the chuck end.

    To fit the Jaws you should fit them loose bring them to the centre and when all 4 Jaws have the faces touching then tighten them up this centres the Jaws. You can see from the image that they don't look Centred. The Axminster Team have Videos on the web site and show you how to doe this. Hope this helps.

    WARNING: DO NOT USE THE INDEX PIN WHEN REMOVING THE FACEPLATE OR CHUCK OTHERWISE THE PIN COULD BREAK! This message is printed in an Attention coloured box on page 11 of the correct manual for the AC305WL There is another similar warning on page 13 under 'Removing the Faceplate'. I put the above text first in my comment to make sure it gets seen easily, but would have normally begun by thanking you and saying how helpful it was to see you go through the setting up of the same machine that I actually did yesterday. I too wondered about the odd plastic bits - for which I could see tapped holes on the back of the base, so was pleased to see one of the posts explain that they were cable tidies. My chuck came with what I thought was a set of smaller jaws already fitted and I did think that the screw plate did not fit in the jaws at all securely. Seeing you attach the actual jaws and then fit the screw plate made me realise my silly mistake, so you have probably saved me from a nasty accident. I did find that the grub screw holding the actual plate screw came loose, so that might be a candidate for some Loctite! I must admit my heart was in my mouth when you kept popping that index pin, in in case it did break - and in view of the warning, I think I will only fit the stop plunger when I actually need it. I must say I like the lathe very much, particularly the easy locking/unlocking and moving of the toolrest - I disliked this feature on the Charnwood mechanical variable speed lathe that the AC305WL replaced, and also the roughness of the casting and general finish on the old machine. I love the quietness of the motor and the electronic speed control. Since you said you 'popped in' to Yandles, I guess you might also be down here in the South West - I'm near Bridgwater - to where I retired and started woodworking some years ago.

    Thanks Don im glad this video helped in some way for you ,i found recently that the 2 black plastic things do screw to the back are infact for holding the 2 black spanners close by so you can use them to remove the chuck instead of using the indexing min lol , yes im only in poole and maybee i could buy you a coffee sometime .

  • @donjohnson24

    @donjohnson24

    @@TheBeardx16 Hi Rich, you obviously didn't fit those plastic bits yet, since you would have found that the tapped holes in the lathe bed are oriented vertically, so the plastic bits go on 'sideways' and therefore would not support the spanners. And to confirm - 'cos I got the CORRECT manual - the picture on page 9 shows them captioned as 'Power cable hooks'. I've now mounted the chuck jaws and the screw chuck plate fits very securely, so again, thanks for that. Also, thanks for the offer of coffee, but I'm one of those weirdos who doesn't drink coffee - or tea - but, No, I'm NOT a Mormon (look for donjohnson24 to get more boring info' about me)

    Can I make a suggestion based on my chuck instructions? May want to see if yours is the same. Mine says to leave the jaw screws loose, tighten the chuck all the way to center so the jaws all push together with no gaps and perfect alignment, and then tighten the screws while it's like that. I, personally, totally missed that bit of the instructions the first time I assembled mine.
