Unboxing a Rare High-Grade Golden Age Comic Book from 1943!
I show off my new copy of All Star Comics #18 in CGC 8.5 Universal with Off-White to White Pages. It’s the Fall of 1943 issue, published at the peak of the Golden Age of Comic Books. It’s written by Gardner Fox and illustrated by a team of artists, including Frank Harry who drew the cover. It’s the first appearance of super villain the King Bee and his minions, including the spider-men and the ant-men.
All Star Comics #18 is a pretty rare book. There are only 67 Universal copies in the CGC Census total, with a median grade of 5.5. At 8.5, this copy ranks at the top 12th percentile with only 5 graded higher!

It is so true I have to buy less to acquire the bigger books This sadly requires discipline and sacrifkce. Sometimes I feel like I'm giving up freedom for the sake of grails. I sometimes question myself if it is worth it. Congratulations on your latest acquisition

Thank you Michael! For me, I like the payoff of the disciplined buys, but one of the great things about the hobby is there are no rules! It’s OK to buy lower quality bulk comics and just enjoy the thrill of having a lot of comics to read or organize or whatever it is about the hobby that you enjoy. I’ve done lots of this kind of buying at different periods of my collecting. Just have fun!

I love your reading in that 1940s voice 😂 The cover and splash page are incredible! Love the way Dr. Midnight punches up and down and the villains fly in every which way 😆 What an amazing high grade addition to your collection 👏

Congrats on this All Star Comics #18, Dr Paul. A beautiful cover at a high grade. I have quite the eclectic collection, with some keys but most aren’t. In the past 25 years, I concentrated on silver age, though I have a healthy number of other periods. I’ve read some and tucked away others. Lack of time (and money) makes this hobby difficult now for collecting high end books and keys. It is a good time to buy, though! Congrats again!

Thank you Peter! I’m actually buying fewer things than I have in years past but they are generally higher quality, or at least very rare. Next up is a new conservation project but I have some more very rare golden age acquisitions to share with the channel soon!

@@ricknestor8930 yes! My plan is to liquidate other collectibles over time and prune the collection to a much higher quality and much smaller collection. But I won’t start that in earnest until I retire. I still work full time and don’t have time to sell, work, spend time with family, create content, etc. but in time I plan to!
