I think the Iphone 13 pro max had the upper hand since most photos there were potrait photos. Else....this cameras are neck and neck. I love how Mrwhosetheboss or Supersaf did different categories to find out the strengths of each camera. Add variety maybe like more landscapes and stuff. Coz generally, iphones are great with potrait photos hence the win. Otherwise....both great cameras..one can never go wrong with any.

Love how you got the whole gang involved for this video, as we all do see photos differently. Really makes a video like this much more effective.

Great video. I love how these comparisons are so real-world. Seems in the one 3x shot that the iphone turned to mush it may have somehow stepped the lens back down and used a digital zoom without triggering the optical zoom. I wonder if that could have been repeated to verify it wasn't an isolated misfire.

13 pro defaults to 2-3 seconds for night mode shots. But you can manually set it to 10 seconds. If it is really dark, manually changing the night mode for longer captures really improves results.

Nice video. In most portrait mode photos, Samsung lost because the blur effect was very exaggerated, but remember that in the S21 Ultra you can adjust it so that it is not so exaggerated, I think that is an important factor to consider.

This is a huge point because it pretty much encapsulates the differences between Samsung and apple. Apple focuses more on a "it just works" point and shoot mindset, whereas Samsung can produce great quality shots too, but you just have to have a better grasp on how to use the software.

I have a 12 Pro Max and I use the 5G tethering to download and upload large files but when I use 5G my phone gets too hot to the point 5G gets disabled and reverts to LTE. I can’t believe a single youtuber didn’t mention this in their review. I’d like to know if the 13 does this as well. If it doesn’t I will switch becuase the only workaround is putting metal on my phone which absorbs the heat before it slows down.

13 pro max is a good upgrade especially with portrait mode and night mode though Vivo X70 pro is on another level. The iPhone just has worse HDR in photos compared to the S21 Ultra and sometimes oversaturated colors than even the Samsung though Apple's signature tan/yellowish colors look pleasing to western people.

@@andyi3541 no, last year and the 11 didn't do so hot, not like the 13! The only real edge Apple has, is video, standard not cinematic, that sucks lol!

I find comparing some of those photos to be somehow difficult. There are more factors than “camera quality”. The spot used for measurement/focus (selected either manually or automatically) will create much different results, especially for light/contrast. The processing AI will then potentially react differently and increase differences. This happens even when shooting multiple fotos with the exact same device… What do you think?

Hey, a great comparison there! Although I know it’s very hard to do it, but for shots that involve humans or animals, next time, please make sure that both phones captured the scenes at the same time. Or at least, when the subjects are doing the same exact pose. Because shots like the one on 3:20 is so unfair to compare as the subject herself was not doing the exact same pose and her hair wasn’t at the same position as the other shot. That’s because there’s a few strands of hair being blurred, as seen in the second photo.

how often would you use the 10x zoom? many people don't zoom in far enough for that to be an issue, and most people that I know that take photos default to using portrait mode or normal non-zoomed mode

@@jyrvietamarra5488 iPhone won the video. Pictures, it did not win at all. In most cases, the Samsung is the best picture-taking device. Also, those remarks about bokeh and blur, on BOTH phones you can adjust it after taking the pic!!! You can increase/reduce bokeh! Even change bokeh-style on BOTH. So just focus on exposure, HDR, how often it takes a sharp pic, how consistent it is. You're totally missing the point. Ironic too how Apple fans loved flat pictures and trashtalked Sammy for contrasty pics yet now y'all make a 180 turn. Hypocricy man, hypocrite.

Couple of questions for you, Vadim, regarding the photographer on these tests. 1.) Are the shots presented in the video we see ALL of the shots you took with both cameras? That's important to know to make sure there's no subconscious bias in the selection of the photos. And 2.) Do you have a rule for only being able to take the shot once? Meaning, if one phone doesn't get the shot right on the first try and the other phone does, do you leave it be, or do you retake the shot with the second phone? Love these comparisons! You guys are great! As always, I was glad to see your review and blind comparison of photos and videos of these two smartphones. Great scenes to compare and a fair result. The only thing I would add is a comment that any of the phones may not always give the same result, and if you take each picture at least 3 times and choose the best one, the result will be more similar. But the color rendering on the face and details are still noticeably better on the Iphone. But the selfie camera is better in detail on Samsung. IMHO In the following comparisons and tests, please make a comparison in studio conditions with constant lighting from sources and from the window. I wonder how "today" the Iphone is ready to replace a professional camera when shooting models in a studio with a large paid face. It's BS comparison considering the scenarios they used. Do you really think the general public is doing a heap of portrait shots? The comparison is geared towards the iPhone. The 10x zoom camera destroys the iPhone and gives you reason to ditch your dedicated camera. Yet they only had one 10x shot. Apple lovers.

And the ultrawide camera on the S21U is miles ahead of Apples, what are you talking about? This comparison was clearly meant for Apple to win, over 30% of the pictures taken was portraits, n they KNEW the portrait mode is better on the iPhone while shooting..... Unbiased camera comparisons need to be split into different categories, with each category having the right amount of photos, not just one photo for one category then 10+ for the next, completely biased comparison here.

Great video comparing what is arguably the two best smartphone cameras today. I think this video shows that Apple is spending their resources on optimizing the quality of common use cases instead of chasing attention grabbing specs. What's interesting is that Apple has more engineers working on just the camera module + ISP than Samsung has for their entire phone.

I can tell you first hand that I would’ve been happy with the 12 Pro Max but I buckled and bought the 13 Pro Max! It’s a little better in camera but overall I would be perfectly happy with the 12. Save your money!

What blur setting did you have on portrait mode? You can go from 1-7.

Not a fan how a bunch of pictures were taken at different times and/or angles. It makes the comparisons unfair in some of the examples. Such as the portrait when he hair was straight for the iPhone but frizzy for s20. And the steering wheel photos were taken at different points of the road. That entirely changes the dynamics of a scene

I got 20 : 10 for the iPhone 13 Pro Max. My suggestion would be to give each foto a mark between 1 and 10 - so I think this would give a bit more fair comparison. But anyway: very good and useful test - congratulations!

In some shots they both do really look great.

It seems like the iPhone likes to heavily saturate the sky with blue, even in the night shots. I was able to predict with almost complete accuracy which photo came from the iPhone if the photo had the sky in it. I did like the extra blue in those shots. I do have to wonder if it accurately reflected what was in the scene.

Good video. I started shooting in ProRaw with 12PM because even when I turn off HDR it still tries to expose way too much of a scene, creating a lack of shadows/tones. The 13 Pro seems better in this regard.. allowing shadows.

I did notice the iPhone tended to artificially brighten shots more and in general go for a much warmer WB. It was pretty hard to critically appraise on an iPad Air 2. I think the 13’s great for SOC shots but if you want to manipulate the image a bit (excluding the portrait mode thing) I think I’d prefer the S21 Ultra. Both great options for that quick snap or vid.

I like computational photography fights! Could you also make one with Pixel 6 when it comes out? Very curious.

The two best phones going head to head. I love both. Apple and Samsung are really pushing quality!

Very nice! Can the iPhone take night mode portraits on all cameras this time around? Last year it could only take night mode portraits with the wide camera, not with the telephoto nor with the front camera.

I always like downloading it when it is the 3 of you, analysing the images

I upgrade from iPhone X 2017 to iPhone 13 pro max. Honestly, the feel of the phone and look doesn’t feel too much different then iPhone X but the camera, the screen, feels like a huge difference. I realize it’s best to upgrade every 4 years or every big redesign

It's not unbiased considering the sample they used. There's too many portrait shots and not enough zoom shots. IRL the zoom camera is much more important.

@Nico Angelo A photographer wants their camera to work for multiple types of shots. Tourists for instance will make much use of 10x optical, also nature photographers. Even taking photos in the city there's loads of scenarios where 10x will give you a unique shot.

@Nico Angelo you're gripping for straws. You're basically argumenting against a 10x optical. Why you're doing it is beyond me. It's like oh crap this phone has 10x optical I don't want it. Instead of realising how many more scenarios you can use the phone in. The s21u will work in many scenarios where the iPhone will be out of its league. Its essentially becomes a 1100 dollar potato machine.

@Nico Angelo Useless when your subject is further away. The s21u offers something which the iPhone doesn't have. Also the notch has grown higher, even though the width is smaller. I saw wide-screen video on the iPhone 13 and I started laughing. What weird design choice to shrink the width of the notch and you actually get a worse situation with increased height. The increased screen real estate can't even be used properly. Steve jobs would kick everyone out if he had seen wide-screen video on the notch iPhones.

iPhone definitely has a better dedicated portrait mode. I almost never use it on my S21 Ultra because the massive sensor has real bokeh without the need for portrait mode IMO.

The iPhone def looks good in a lot of photos, but you had so many portrait shots. I never use portrait mode and I don't know a lot of people who do. Happy with my S21 Ultra :) I like the iPhone color profiles feature though.

One of the best unbiased smartphone photography comparos I’ve ever seen. I’ll absolutely keep this video in mind when I plan to buy an iPhone 13 Pro Max (she also mentioned maybe the 12 Pro Max as well) for my wife in the next month or two, upgrading from her iPhone 7 Plus.

Apple absolutely killed it with the portrait mode this year. I also prefer the 3x zoom pictures compared to the Ultra. So much better dynamic range and colors. That said the ultrawide is seriously disappointing. Ultrawide shots on the iphone are completely lifeless with poor dynamic range and softness...Android flagships are leagues ahead of Apple when it comes to ultrawide cameras.

The most annoying thing on my iPhone 13 Pro that I noticed is that when I try using the telephoto lens, it sometimes uses the digital zoom of the 1x lens instead of using the actual telephoto lens. And that is what causes some of the photos on 3x zoom to look pixelated and overall bad. It might be the software that is messing with the cameras, but I hope it gets fixed in the next update..

You can tell on every picture which phone is which. The iPhone 13 was brighter and sharper on every picture. The S21 looked better when you needed the shot to be a bit more "artsy" or darker.

Thanks for the amazing video. BUT, what about moving objects rather than pictures of stills? I always find with Samsung they can't capture as fast and there's a blur and Apple doesn't have that noticable movement blur. Currently on the Note 20 Ultra and always have to ask my friends to not move an inch when I take pictures.

This should be an eye-opener for everyone who says the iPhone 13 pro (or max) is just a minor upgrade to the 12 pro max. I bought the 13 pro on release to replace a 12 pro max and I noticed a huge difference right away.

I'm curious to know if all pictures were taken with auto mode or had any changes to get the shots between phones. Also one complaint I have, was that some of the zoomed photos weren't taken from the same distance as this distorts the comparisons, because it favors focus over actual focal length and lens/camera capabilities.

Yep. "Oh, this camera works great at this distance but this one doesn't so let me move up so the camera that doesn't work at this distance looks better" instead of showing the actual comparison of the cameras at a specific distance. But yeah, it was unbiased. And "I'm going to shoot mostly portraits" but yeah, it's unbiased. I shoot a lot of videos and landscapes with some portraits. For me, Samsung won hands down. It wasn't even close. For someone doing close up portraits, then Apple was a little better (I didn't always agree with their pick).
