A doctor whose last name starts with the syllable "Kil." Can't beat that. A Bugs Bunny cartoon even spoofed that, with a "Dr. Kilpatient."

Lew Ayers was a conscientious objector during World War II due to his religious beliefs. It took courage to risk his career to stand by his principles, and he was stigmatized for a long time. Hollywood for a while wanted to forget he existed. They worked him back into the nation's heart and he got lots of good work, but there was that hole in his work history.

@@robertdesantis6205 Oh well, I'm not big on Wikipedia. Years ago I looked up newspaper stories from WW II about Lew in a CO camp in Oregon. The NY Times also editorialized an overall sympathetic view on his Christian rationale for refusing to fight, but concluded that it was not practical. There was a backlash against him, with theaters wanting his name off their marquees. Then, Ayers decided to serve as a non-combatant medic in the Pacific. Media started hailing him for his service. Some COs (and I knew a Christian minister who also had been a CO during that war) said he had sold out their ideals for public image. It's complex.

Sure. My initial views came from a book about Ayers, although even biographies & auto biographies are not totally reliable. You might find "The Great Starvation Experiment," by Todd Tucker re: COs during WW2 interesting.@@brianarbenz1329

Surprised no one noticed that the unconscious patient was Michael Forest, who would later famously play "Apollo" in the Star Trek episode, "Who Mourns for Adonais." He wasn't easy to identify until he 'awoke.'

This was produced in 1960, from the same team behind "ONE STEP BEYOND" [producer Collier Young and director John Newland, who also filmed their series at MGM], featuring Lew Ayres as an older "Dr. James Kildare" {he previously portrayed him in the initial MGM movie series from 1938 through 1942, and a syndicated radio show from 1949 through '51)- this time mentoring young physicians following in his footsteps at good ol' "Blair General". This half-hour pilot found no takers for the 1960-'61 season, but MGM refused to give up on reviving the idea. A new hour-long pilot was produced by Norman Felton in early 1961, featuring Richard Chamberlain as "Dr. Jim Kildare", and Raymond Massey as "Dr. Leonard Gillespie". NBC bought it for the 1961-'62 season. p.s. the scene at 9:16 was featured in a photo in the April 4, 1960 issue of BROADCASTING magazine, in an article on TV pilots for the 1960-'61 season. *"In the past few weeks {ad} agencies have been holding screenings such as this one in New York at McCann -Erickson (of MGM -TV's Dr. Kildare pilot film). At right (I to r): Thomas P. Losee, executive vp and assistant general manager; Thomas A. McAvity, vice president, client services; Mary Harris, director, tvradio programming services; backs to camera: George Newi (foreground), junior executive. new program development; Hal Graham, director, tv -radio client services; Curt Peterson, account executive, all M -E Productions (programming division of agency)."*

I should really thank you, for sharing this episode with me. I didn't have a clue about it even being filmed. I'm so glad, Lew wanted to do this, even if it didn't make it as a series. It was a great wrap up story for Kildare as Lew. It answers a lot of questions about him. He did find love again and he did take over for Gillespie, when he finally stepped down. Gillespie would have been so proud of him.

Great video! I'm 61 and still a practicing Registered Nurse although now I work in a county government office job. But for many years I worked in an Emergency Department (trauma center) as a charge nurse and watching this video shows me how much medicine and patient care has changed and how much it's still the same. It's funny, in my mind I remembered the show Dr. Kildare and knew the character (Kildare) I was looking for but when I Googled it, that character didn't come up as the person I remembered. However, all the time I was thinking of the show Ben Casey. It took until I saw Vince Edwards playing in another role in a movie that I realized the show I watched was Ben Casey. Whew, I'm glad that mystry is solved!

1960, when unironic earnestness was still possible. I almost want to whisper, "Vietnam's coming. Beware Dealy Plaza." But it wouldn't have meant much to people at that point. There's the America before and the America after those two things. This was the America before. Also, very sudsy. Probably why it wasn't picked up. It's executing the usual tropes but there's not much life or energy in them.

@@brianarbenz1329 No, not the housing crisis. The1979-81 Recession was much worse; I was there. my parents lose their buisness and house. Fun times. As for 9/11 I kinda/sorta disagree. Vietnam was a process, 9/11 was an event. The Second Iraq War is more similar to Vietnam in that it announced that the military industrial complex was firmly in control and driving policy. Something that is still happening to this day. The other, and main reason, the comparison fails (imo) is because we weren't innocent in 2001. Too much shit had happened. _Vietnam_ happened!

@@scottmccrea1873 You say it was "objectively" worse, but you acknowledge you are relying on only your family members' experiences. The nation was on the verge of collapse in 2007 through 2010; the entire financial sector needed a trillion $ to bail it out, all because the governing process was had been completely changed from the late '70s through then because of Money is Speech. PACs bought the decision making process and when they nearly brought the nation down, they bought the process of ostensibly fixing the system, which meant putting all the toxic mechanisms back into place.
