Vanya, like everyone else in the Umbrella Academy, was born unexpectedly on the same day. What's interesting about her, and the others birth, was that none of the women who gave birth to these children were pregnant before that day. They conceived, carried, and gave birth within a matter of moments. What's more interesting is that the children born on this day all seem to have some special type of ability. 43 super powered individuals were born on the same day. Vanya, like her siblings was found, and adopted by billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, and formed the Umbrella Academy. She later goes on to become known as the White Violin, a character with tremendous destructive power.

I actually like the backstory with Leonard much more than the comic one. In the comic it's kind of a Generic Bad Guys plotline, but in the show we get a pretty good glimpse on how abusive relationships actually work. He's preying on Vanya's insecurities, isolating her from the family, gaslighting her, convincing her that he's the only one she should listen to, and constantly telling her that all of his questionable behaviour is for her own good. This storline is less fantastic, but more terrifying.... because it can happen and does happen in real life.

I like the show better than the comic, because the comic is just too vague at times and the show gives a lot more context to situations, such as with Vanya. The show handles Vanya's transformation into the White Violin with a lot more detail and gives believable circumstances to show why she would snap.

  • @KeyIssues

I do totally get your point. I personally really like the show, and really loved the comics 9ive had to read them about 10x each now for these videos coming). The main problem with the show versus the comics is that there just isn't enough of the comics. The writers are given a bit more leniency and because of that they are able to flesh out events. For instance Apocalypse Suite and season 1 are clearly the same thing, but there are elements of Dallas in there as well, and a ton more character development in season 1. One thing I am going for in these videos is to be as thorough as possible, due to the fact that there really isn't any resources for Umbrella Academy online. Hopefully my intense deep dive into the comics will prove to be one of the defacto knowledge bases that lets people flesh out these wiki's for other people to learn without needing to read the books.

Vanya is a character that makes my heart hurt. Of course her actions at the end, like killing Pogo were wrong but I think what most people need to understand is that she never caused the apocalypse. It was her siblings who were the cause except for Allison. The think about Vanya is that she is majorly depressed. You can see it from the beginning of the show. And that depression is (I believe) due to those pills that Reginald gave her. Just imagine having your powers being suppressed for so long and not even remembering them! God knows what it did to her psyche! And then shit happens. Leaonard targets her and of course she falls for him. Just imagine being so lonely and having this one person who you think genuinly cares for you and want you to succeed. He just wants to make you happy. And tell me really.. why would she have listened to Alisson? A woman who is practically a stranger to her. She has not seen her in 12 years and even before that she was ignored by her and the rest of the siblings. Vanya doesn't exactly have happy thoughts related with her siblings (except Five. I feel that those two were on good terms). So, yes for Vanya it was a hurtful experience to have her 'sister' dismiss her boyfriend. Of course as we see in the first timeline, which was changed afterwards, Vanya realises that Alisson was right. And Vanya loves her sister. That much is clear. She loves Alisson and Alisson love her. Their sisterhood blooms beautifully during the show and I absolutely adore it. When Vanya slits Alisson's throat with her bow, her immediate horror at what she had done proved to me that she wasn't a bad person. Vanya is just a person who is rediscovering their powers and who never got a chance or the correct guidance to control them before. She is getting all of those powers back under the pressure of an abusive relationship (which she doesn't know yet) and that de stabilizes her mind. During a time when Vanya desperately needed a guide and a mentor, she instead got an emotionally manipulative and abusive boyfriend. Just watching her story progress makes me so sad. And then she goes home, so scared but still ready to own up to her mistake knowing that she might lose her family for good for her actions. And what does she find? Her 'big' brother pretending to comfort her and then proceeding to lock her away. She sees Alisson try to free her but then the little girl in her awakens. She was alone and scared and all of those memories were coming back. And Vanya snaps. But see that snap wasn't so sudden. And even afterwards when she was playing her violin on the stage, she was fine. The world would have been just fine if the siblings hadn't interfered. If they had just let Alisson deal with it in her amazing way, things would have been okay. Because we see Alisson smile at her sister and Vanya returns that smile. For me this was a beautiful scene between two sisters who finally are becoming sisters. Alisson (bless her beautiful heart) forgives Vanya and Vanya does the same. That split moment was all that was needed. That was all Vanya ever needed. It is what all any of us need really. Someone who loves us and accepts us and shows us the correct way. Vanya didn't need an abusive father belittling her and drugging her and destroying her self-worth. She needed someone who truly loved her and cared for her, just like Alisson came to do later on. So, don't think that Vanya is feeding of off the victim mentality. She is genuinely a victim of terrible circumstances (still not excusing some of her actions) and I believe she is a good person. Just majorly depressed and in need of help and lots and lots of love from her big sister.

In the comic Diego can hold his breath for an indefinite period of time, something not touched on in the series, which would make him highly valuable underwater. If I remember right, Sir Reginald made a comment that Diego was "perfect for taking down people", which is also something a kraken was known for doing. Beyond that, there's little else to indicate the origin of the name.

To clarify, I think she is on an anti-anxiety med, like valium, not an anti-depressant. She is shown taking it at various points thru the day, and it wears off pretty quickly for something she has been taking for years, implying it is a fast-release medicine. Valium and things like that tend to make you feel pretty dopy and mentally slower than normal, and I have been on them before and personally found them to be very hindering; they suppress almost all emotions and as a musician myself.... yeah... I don’t think this completely true yes benzos are to treat anxiety but antidepressants especially snris at a high dosage are used to treat anxiety as well and can cause emotional blunting meaning you have neither highs or lows , benzos can also be used to treat ptsd or mania which can cause aggression or outbursts in radical emotions which I find more likely for her to be treated for as she from later seasons of the show find out she took out all the living nannies when they tried to make her eat her oatmeal until mom replaced her , but what I find more likely is that she didn’t have any disorder at all that she was a normal kid with normal anger issues jus with lots of power at hands so Reginald concocted a mix of drugs into pills in order to suppress her powers as we see in the show the more time she leaves it since being out of her system ( like snris and ssris rather than a benzo which has a few hours before it’s left ur system rather than snris that stay in ur system upto a week) the stronger her powers get but she is shown earlier in the show to be distressed yet nothing happens power wise suggesting that the medication isn’t for her mood but for powers and the reason she thinks they calm her down is cus it’s acting as a placebo as she THINKs they help her mood/anxiety

I disagree because the "Jean Grey's version" is a very common and repetitive kind of story where in a group of people with supernatural abilities (mostly), there is one generally more powerfull and more emotionally unstable than the others who ends up growing mad, destroying everything on his way, even attacking people he loves. The big difference is that Jean's madness is due to her possession by the Phoenix when for Vanya or Carrie or Andrew (from Chronicle) , it's the result of years of facing abuse. And generally at the end, this person tragically die. Well not in the Umbrella Academy. 😊 By the way, Vanya development is pretty well done and you understand why she's desperately craving for attention and approbation, being an easy prey for a cunning and manipulative psycho.

I always felt that their father let Vanya play the violin in order for it to be a catalyst for her powers (kinda like how Thor's Mjölnir is the conduit for his powers but not necessarily the source of it) in the future since her powers have to do with sound and/or music. Maybe one day he was going to tell her about her powers and by then after mastering the violin it might've been easier for her to control them (at least maybe in the tv show). Things probably didn't go as planned so she never found out. Just my personal take on it!

Out of these seven emotionally wrecked children (that I want to take care and make sure they’re always happy if I could btw), my heart goes to Vanya the most. I REALLY like her character. She’s very complex and I think she did not deserve to be locked up by Luther at that time when she was so scared and confused about the power building up inside her. My heart was breaking watching her go through that pain and confusion and having to watch her siblings walk away scared while expecting them to be the ones who should understand what she’s going through. SHE NEEDED HELP and it was only Klaus who really understood this to be honest There was a reason why she had to be alone growing up but it doesn’t mean that makes it less painful for her having to go through all that. And I just really want her to be happy, you know? She deserves it! Sorry I got carried away

Uhm...the whole point of the series and the comics is that as lewd and obvious as it may be percieved, the audience is made to think that the 7 children were emotionally scared. But they're not. Turn monocles into a strict dad, mom into a doting loving mother, and strip away the kids of their powers and you have regular people in a suburban household. And vanya's a bitch btw. A likeable bitch.

@@acinorevagetro5532 exactly. Siding with Vanya is actually a dangerous indicator of how one can be easilly manipulated by a person who acts fragile and plays the victim card, when in fact, she's the only one who has victimised herself. At a young age, she has shown no remorse over murdering her nannies, has no skill to control her very dangerous ability which the Dr. might have percieved as dangerous to herself and everyone around the household. You have 6 other children who might be murdered if Vanya goes on a tantrum, so it's kinda understandable why she put in a chamber. And even when Vanya grew up, she didn't really emotionally develop. She used her entire family's loss for her own comfort (when she wrote her memoir) so that the world may side with her, nothwidthstanding the fact that she's also hurting her family in the process. That's why Vanya's a bitch. A likeable bitch. Everyone's felt to be a victim at some point in our lives that we can somehow understand her situation. It's just that, dear Vanya's managed to take it to the extreme with her lack of empathy and emotional maturity that people find ways to get out of their situations somehow. Problem is, she refuses to escape it since she's grown comfortably in it.

Jakeylicious7891 I don’t think she was playing the victim card?? I actually think she remained loving of her siblings and I don’t remember her meeting them again and went accusing them they’re the reason why she has a shitty life. She never tried to hurt them UNTIL that part in the last episode and I don’t think she did it only because she just wants to hurt people. All the years of neglect and betrayal, I can’t imagine anyone being okay with that and sooner or later, anyone in that situation would snap. And this resulted to her burst of intense emotion that also triggered her power that she can no longer control because she wasn’t really guided of it in the first place. I’m not saying I agree to everything she did or all her decisions but one thing that I like about this show and the characters is that there are no good and bad people they are only people who make good and bad choices and that makes them so painfully human and that’s alright!

So some differences that you missed. In the show vanya power is not tied to the violin like in the comic, however she harmonizes with sounds and converts that over to her power. Kind of a weird thing to try and explain, but it is why when in a chamber where no sound can get through, she harmonizes with her heartbeat to blow it sky high. In the show the person who helps her with her power is a crazed fanboy who wanted to be like the 7 but just wasn't special, he found the book and went for vanya to trick her into learning her powers.

Pyth0n - If the people who caused you the trauma aren’t going to stop while you’re able to defend yourself? The issue with this character (Vanya) was clear. They wanted to lock her up in the metal box and were never willing to let her go because they thought she was a danger when all she wanted to do was to apologize for losing control over her powers. But instead, they didn’t allow her that and dismissed her by locking her up. She understood from their history that she was being naive and they weren’t what she thought they were (family). She unlocked her rage and lost control. Remember, humans can take on for awhile until they reach the breaking point. If you don’t have anyone or anything to turn to since your childhood and everyone tries to put you down and no one ever allows you to belong, your development isn’t going to be normal and you’ll definitely not follow what’s right or wrong because you were never part of that discussion in your life. You can hold people accountable when they’re included and part of the conversation or whatever they supposed to be held accountable for. Otherwise, you can’t demand anything or uphold standards for everyone when the rules, rights, responsibilities aren’t even there or fair for everyone.

Based on your summary of the comic rendition I can say I definitely like the idea of the tv series Vanya more. The portrayal strikes me as much more nuanced. For example she doesn’t intentionally cause harm to any of her family members until after they throw her into the prison of her childhood nightmares when she returns to them to ask for forgiveness and seek help. While they were not being truly malicious this event, when combined with everything else she had been through her whole life and the previous days, seems to cause her to experience a straight up psychotic break as opposed to deliberately choosing to turn her wrath upon the world. I didn’t even get the impression she went into the concert with the intent of causing the apocalypse.

I knew she was dangerous at that point and has no qualms about hurting people -- but I personally thought that she was just doing what she knew her whole life so I was very annoyed when her siblings kept interfering with her moment -- especially before that when she was locked up without consideration.

Ive only watched the show, but from the character impressions I've gotten from that you're sorely mistaken on Reginald's outlook towards the kids. He has an extremely pragmatic and realistic attitude, generally to the point that he can almost be mistaken for a pessimist, but his actions are pretty well grounded in the best and most helpful solution, his design for Mom being one of the most outstanding. You're right, he doesn't have a very loving personality, which is where Mom came in. Big hint to this was when Diego was asked, I think by Luther, if he ever thought her personality came from Dad, because of how cold and calculated he always was; Mom filled that loving void, and gave the children that motherly nurture aspect. Vanya was his, "baby girl," without the coddling aspect. You could see his self loathing when he had to put Vanya in the soundproof room. And, I don't think he'd have ever let any of the other kids use Stella's violin, let alone how much he smiled when Vanya played it. Mother's android nature was purely required due to Vanya's rebellious and uncontrollable side; the scenes of Vanya harming/killing the previous maids was a huge nod to this factor. When Reginald hits Vanya's wall with the wine glass exercise is when Reginald realized he wouldn't be able to help her with her powers in the long run, leading to altering her life to suit having, "no powers." Luther is probably the most self righteous and biggest baby out of all of them, though with some reason after the gene treatment incident. I'd have to say Luther pushed Reginald into putting him on the moon after he became entirely introverted and pretty much ostracized himself. Reginald was probably hoping that the prolonged sense of purpose mixed with seclusion would help him start coping with his new physique. Like I said, only watched the show but the character in the show certainly isn't as great of an antagonist as you seem to make him.

Since they jumped they can effectively inform their dad that keeping her powers under wraps will make her end the world, and instead of just blatantly shut her powers down, lessen the dosage of her medicine so she can still take it and have access to her powers, so she has limiters in place.
