I asked them why there isn't a 2.5gb LAN and why the ram isn't upgradable and they never replied lol. I didn't even notice there is no display out at first lmao.

I'm kinda surprised with some of the choices they made with this device. Might have to pull it apart and see what's in the box lol

Still a bad deal though...
What kind of drugs are they smoking over at Umbrel? Who in their right mind would buy this, especially at this price? Utterly insane.

Maybe they think people are stupid :)
the specs are decent for a media streaming box, but it should be passively cooled and also theres no reason it cant have 2.5gbe at that price
Thanks for making this video so I can skip this hardware for my home lab :)
Its kind of cool but like others said the price is absurd for what it is. The software is what makes the device so maybe just sell that for a reasonable price instead of trying to sell an outdated, underpowered device with no display out for $600!!! Edit: Just saw you can get the Umbrel OS for free to install on your own device. That makes this device even more absurd!!! I don't see anyone in their right mind wanting to buy this at this price!
I'll stick with my Pi + CasaOS thanks. Why does it look so much like CasaOS anyway ?
Thanks for the review. How does the VPN works? Is it a subscription based app? Or is everything that comes with the Home we can use without extra fee?
Nice video, great to see you posting videos 👍 For $400, one can buy a nvme-only 6-bay NAS with 2x 2.5Gbe, two sodimm slots incl. a single stick of 8gb ddr4, eMMC 32gb, hdmi and dp out, and that same N5105. Consumers didn't cheer that price, but it looks like a more featureful device than the Unbrel Home and for less money. Also, the usb-c on the rear on the Umbrel Home I am guessing is not PD 3.0 with display capability. Kindest regards, neighbours and friends.
Cant you put USB video out?
Thanks for this video. I do have a question. Why don't smaller companies like this used refurbished Mini PC, like the HP EliteDesk or the Lenovo ThinkCentre?

It would be nice if they could, but they can't warranty used hardware. You could, if you wanted, get your own used PC and install Umbrel on it pretty easily
It would be nice a video comparing casaos, umbrel, cosmos, tipi... There is a lot of interesting options nowadays!
The new model Umbrel Home with UmbrelOS v1.0 (post beta) has the N100 processor and the price has dropped to $399. It is a very popular choice for running a Bitcoin node.
Hi - Casaos local can be accessed by IP + port or by new domain, I suppose that with Umbrel you can do the same
@DBTechYT

The problem is that Umbrel OS is set up to make sure that you are logged into Umbrel before giving access to any of the services. It does so by routing users to ports 2000 to do the authentication check which screws up using a different domain. There may be a way to disable the authentication, but I haven't spent enough time with it. They are working on using a tunnel for remote access, but it uses one of their domains.

🤦♀🤦♀@@DBTechYT
I quite like the whole Umbrel OS.. the hardware sucks though. I may set it up on a proxmox and benefit from better cpu/memory/storage and 10Gbe ethernet whilst reaping the benefits of not having to worry about too much command line stuff
With the Umbrel now being $399, would you recommend it? Seems very attractive at that price.

Because of MY interaction with them, I wouldn't give them a penny. I feel like they were deliberately deceptive in the presentation of the device. That said, if you want to run Umbrel on a device where it "just works" and you can't find a better deal on a low-powered small-form-factor device, then it might be worth it.

@@DBTechYT I was also thinking of going the beelink or used dell micro form factor and downloading umbrel on it. Do you think that would give a bit more flexibility? Great review by the way
Watched the review this isn't for me at this price point if was £250 maybe - You can get a similar spec with graphics with 512GB rom instead of 2TB NVME for £180 but add your own SSD for storage. I would want the ability to change the OS even if add USB Graphics.
Did buy it at 349,- euro on Black Friday deal 😅

Me too. Unfortunately the power supply is only US standard. No converter possible for Europe and UK. Kind a tricky to use custom power supply which breaks the guarantee

Hello DB Tech -There is also this other alternative to CasaOs cosmos server -

it looked like the 2TB drive could be swapped out. maybe try another drive with OMV or something else?

@@DBTechYT I agree with you. I am in the process of choosing a mini PC, and I am dubious about the reliability of the offerings on the market.
Hi DB, I would like to see a video on how to setup and configure Teleport for my Homelab. You rock keep up the good work!
A teardown would of been informative!
There is a display port. You need to open the case

Yeah I know. I made a video about it having an HDMI port on it a couple of days later: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nX17s6eupdfamM4.html
i dont understand who gonna need to buy this )= you can get any nuc intel or mini pc like the nuc intel for less than 200$ and some have RAM that can be upgrade and often have a second slot for an SDD, it's better to have 2 SSD for those kind of projet, an SSD for the system and another SSD for storing the data no HDMI, why... (or any display port) in their website, you can download their OS to install it on a Raspberry for example, so make less sense to "buy" this device for 600$ )= using their OS and app store make you dependant from them essentially, the day the company disappears => you will be sad to have to change everything

The Umbrel OS seems nice but the hardware is way overpriced. Get a used pc and install the OS on it.
I think it's a good idea for Umbrel to rely on hardware for its main profit
i think i would be most interested in hacking a device like this and putting ubuntu server on it or something like that. the prebuilt os doesnt seem as comprehensive imo and i would think making a guide on how to install linux on the machine will help avoid it becoming ewaste in the first place.
$600?!?!?!? WTF? An Intel nuc is like $100 for seemingly similar specs.

A NUC with specs are not $100. You can get a NUC several gens back that cheap, but not new specs. Secondly, NUC has been discontinued, so we will need other options.

Who in the name of Jeebus are they marketing this thing to? Umbrel is primarily designed for crypto and that is about it. It is designed to run on a Pi 4. It doesn’t need 16gb of ram. The 2tb Nvme is a nice touch though as run ing your own node requires quite a bit of space. Miners run nodes. Miners also BUILD their own mining rigs. If they can’t figure out docker, they have bigger issues. Hell if you need Umbrel this bad, run a fricking Umbrel node in an Lxc container on a NUC or even a Pi4. This thing truly looks terrible. Awful execution. No display port, what a crime. That hardware isn’t actually that bad and would make an awesome HA or Frigate system with a coral. Even a decent little NAS with a external enclosure. Six bills for this? Maybe at 200 people might take a risk. Not for six bills. Things like this are an impulse purchase because you were fried one night and watched a video on PiHole and thought it was cool, but couldn’t get a Pi. This pops up and you run away when you see the price.
Thanks DB Tech. Not in my price range.
@DBTechYT

You are definitely not alone. I'm not sure why they chose the price they did.
Why give your data to big tech, while you can give it to small businesses with little to no oversight. 😂 The no display port is kinda ok for security reasons. Price is crazy of course, and the single ssd for all your data equally bad.
fr though... who in their right mind will buy this ?! A mini pc with no display port, outdated hardware and a "locked" server OS ???. What use did they intend for those 3 external usb 3.0 ? 3 USB sticks ? 3 External hdds ?
This thing is a joke I'll rather build a much better one at that price and also be quieter
Meh...Expensive beelink china box, vhut less useful
yeah at that price, no one is going to buy this, unless you're a buttcoin shiller that doesn't know much about tech.
Why would you recommend this? Smells like a payed review.

I never said I would recommend this product. I'm only covering a product that was sent to me. Also I never take money for a review. Any time I take money for something, I clearly mark it as a paid sponsorship, which this was not.
