A Scottish man, dressed as a leather biker / LeatherMan (Wonderful piece of subversion) singing about the grandeur of being in Vienna - what could be more captivating?! A song everyone thinks was a No.1 single in the U.K. although it didn't quite make it. Midge Ure removed the heavy leather jacket early in the performance as it was probably just too hot too wear under those intense BBC studio lights! I think he looks like he really enjoyed the role (And about as "butch" as Midge ever got!). I remember seeing this performance (I was 6 years old), but like a sponge, I knew that being a singer looked so cool if I could perform dressed like that and sing such wonderful songs! So glad that it is still available to watch today, years later.

I have a memory a concert performance on TV where a drummer was centre stage with one or two drums with a huge audience. It was indoor so not LiveAid. It was so cool and I always thought the drummer was one of the star performers and that there were two 'leader's of the group. But I can find what I remember anywhere. I think it was later in the 80s. This TOP version comes closest as the drummer is featured, but this was like one or two drums set up centre stage and I don't remember the rest of the band. I'd love if someone has an idea about it?

Im 100% positive what you mean is from the Monument Tour 1983, which resulted in a live album called "Monument - the Soundtrack", and a video release of the Hammersmith Odeon concert. But the drummer wasn't centre stage, he remains in the back - it's the other 3 members who at a point start playing electric drum solo / outro - front-stage: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gG2p27ZqYdm-gNo.html

Um, you got this the wrong way round. "Fetish loving homosexuals" had been wearing that gear for decades before he copied them. Freddie Mercury also copied the gay leather man look on TOTP wearing the leather Muir cap popular in leather bars all over the West.

Absolutely. As an ageing gay leatherman I know exactly what I was wearing in the late seventies and early eighties - full leather with a Muir cap. I saw Freddie in the leather bars of Munich and even ( my main claim to fame ) was chatted up by him in a night club in Earls Court.
