So I purchased the equivalent to the venoms from Dutch. I also purchased the Dyneema continuous loops for a becket hitch from myerstech hammock labs and they have a awesome little loop that takes the pressure off when you pull out your becket hitch the next day. I bought mine on eBay but his etsy store had me too.

My dutch titanium cinch buckles shredded my webbing so I bought his spider webbing. It shredded those too.

Venom straps with a becket hitch is what I use as well for my ultralight hammock. My only concern with them is that after a lot of knotting the webbing doesn't lay flat anymore, it's very compressed and deformed, it looks more like a rope than webbing. I worry that it's not doing a good job dispersing weight on the tree and could be damaging it. I feel like I may as well be using just a rope. I can flatten it back out, but it's very finicky and takes several minutes every time I set up.

I have the same issues with the straps. I try and put them around the tree twice whenever possible. I also got some 2” venom huggers from Jeff Myers. Those have been a nice addition to my kit.

I use a 50 cent coin to straighten out the tapes when they get messed up.

Seems like you could marlin spike your whoopie sling as short as the fixed loop- if you wanted to. My 2 cents... or even toggle it through the fixed loop- if it's a locked brummel loop! Can't get much shorter than that!!

Great info.! I'm at the point of discovering these products and this was the perfect video. hammock gear and dutch gear is all I'm looking at now, I've wasted so much money... wish I would have learned about this stuff sooner. Thank you very much for the video! Ultralight seems a little less money with hammocks then tents. Maybe not, I just paid 400 for a dyneema tarp from hammock gear, by the time I get it all together it might be about the same. I understand the saying buy once cry once though. All the crap I've bought before finding the good stuff was a total waste of money

Ive been using NRS-15 straps for over 10 years. As a person that likes to indulge on the river its the easiest setup Ive ever encountered. Im not too concerned about weight as long as I can drag out when my ride shows up. LOL, Cheers!

Great information, well explained. I'm starting to want to move away from my Dutch polypro and beetle buckles to a becket hitch, saw the same as you that whoopies can only go so short. Going to have to look to rsbtr for some venom straps, although Warbonnet have also come out with some new ones

Good info! I am working on getting the lightest hammock set up and this looks great! I tried to find the 1” venom strap but couldn’t seem to find anyone that is selling it right now. Is the 1 “ UHMWPE Straps that Dutch sells the same thing? It shows it weighing 2.4 grams/ft. Thanks for another great video!

I made my own EVO Loops. If you don’t want to make your own, Jeff Myers at Myers Hammock Lab has some available. They’re like Dutch Clips but made out of Amsteel. One of my favorite additions to my kit!

Same journey as mine! Haven’t tried the the Venom straps. Will have to try that out next. I’m currently using straps from MyersTech (find him on Facebook) which is about the same set up as your Venom system, but there are attachment points for your tarp as well on the same system which has enabled me to get rid of the continuous ridgeline on my tarp! The only thing I don’t like about his rig is the strap material has a fair amount of stretch to it. Perhaps I’ll try doing the same thing with the venom straps. We may have a winner here!

John Phillips pros of the Venom Straps are that they don’t stretch, are extremely strong for the weight, and, for me, allow the Becket hitch to be used without slipping. One con is that the material does “bunch up” and needs to be straightened out, but that’s not a big deal for me. I haven’t experimenting with my tarp attached to my hammock suspension. I like having them separate but that’s just me. Maybe I’ll take a look at that in the future! I would recommend the Venom Straps if you want an extremely lightweight option that doesn’t use any hardware! Thanks for the comment!

7:06 ... or you can just skip the whoopie all together if the hang is tight. Just hang the hammocks CL directly on the marlin spike hitch. I don’t trust the becket hitch after it inverted on me and I woke up in a short free fall 5 am in the morning

Ola Andersson yes, you can eliminate the Whoopie all together and use the CL if that works! I also had the Becket hitch fail on me using mule tape and Spider Web 2.0 webbing. However, I’ve put the Venom Straps that I currently use through a bunch of testing and it hasn’t failed on me, so I trust it to hold the knot. Thanks for the comment!

I ditched all the metal from my suspension. I use the becket hitch with soft shackles for the tree straps.

Andrew Murray not difficult you just need to know how it’s routed through the gathered end. Here’s a vid I made that may help... look up installing a ridgeline organizer on a Dream hammock.

You could do a double even triple becket hitch aka double or triple sheet bend. Also, it's important to dress and load the knot before use.

Looks like venom straps are the way to go

Jeff Myers Those Venom Straps are amazing!! I’m really happy with mine!! I’m also a fan of your Amsteel loops!! I scrolled through your pics and saw you mentioned that using hardware does damage to the bark of trees. With all do respect, I have to disagree with that. Whether it be a carabiner or a Dutch clip, I make sure that the hardware is positioned to the side of the tree where the webbing is running back down to the hammock. This position avoids any contact with the tree. It also eliminates the hardware from taking on the entire load, which is what would happen if it were positioned on the opposite side of the tree. Even when I use my soft shackles, I have it positioned to the side. This makes sure that the Amsteel does not contact the tree, which could cause abrasion to the Amsteel and possible failure of the loop. Hopefully others are aware of this and they are using their gear in a way that no damage is being caused. I appreciate seeing your setup! I may have to go back to my soft shackles full time and save a few grams!!

It "can" do damage when placed on the side , most guys pay attention and center it so it is fine, but if the metal hook goes left or right it is digging the bark. I used to be a dutchware fan kid , but I love the soft links so much better

Jeff Myers I agree. It’s important to pay attention to what’s going on with your setup so it’s hung properly and not doing damage. ... you know what’s funny, I made the soft shackles, used them on a few setups, then put them back in the drawer. Not sure why I didn’t replace the clips with them. Probably because I paid cash for them and wanted to validate their purchase! Haha. The 2.2 UHMWPE Venom webbing is something else. In my experience, it holds a knot better than the 2.0 Spider webbing. Do you have any experience with the 1.5? I’m comfortable with the 2.2 because I’ve tested it and trust it, but I’m curious about the 1.5 also....

I'm trying to decide between the Beetle Buckles, Cinch Bugs, and The Dutch Buckle. Which buckle do you like best? Could you do a video comparing them?

Shelter Monkey out of the three is recommend the beetle buckles. I wasn’t a fan of the cinch bugs. I didn’t like the way they moved up and down the webbing. I haven’t used the Dutch buckle, but if you’re comfortable with the marlin spike hitch this buckle seems unnecessary. If you’re looking for a cinch buckle type of system I’d recommend the Dutch titanium cinch buckle. It’s lightweight, easy to install and provides unlimited adjustment points along the webbing! I think basically I just wanted to try something different since I've never tried the buckle thing. Like you, I enjoy optimizing... though I haven't gone nearly as far as you.

Evan Harris I’ve never used descender rings so I’m not sure if the Venom Straps would work. The material is very thin, that’s why they don’t work with cinch buckles, so I could imagine you’d have the same problem with descender rings. Let me know if you try it out and if it worked!!!

Thanks! I'm trying to find a perfect combination of the adjustability of buckles or rings with ultralight straps. Until I can feel really good about using descender rings or find a buckle that doesn't slip, I guess I'll just stick with a Becket hitch...

Evan Harris beetle buckles with Spider/poly Straps from Dutchware is probably your best bet right now. Check those out if you haven’t already.

Metal not needed. Open loop on UHMWPE with Becket hitch. Boom! Light and easy.

I have a couple pieces of cord on my CL’s hanging off. The Becket hitch is also a water break.

My bad. I thought you were referring to the Spider Webbing that Dutch offers. I have not tried the Spiders that you mentioned. I’m not a fan of Whoopie Slings. There’s been a few times when I went to set up in between trees that were a little tight and the whoopie sling wouldn’t adjust anymore. I needed to tie off my CL directly to the tree huggers. Not a big deal but I was turned off after that happened. I like using the Becket Hitch and the Venom Straps work well and are lightweight. I also like Dutch’s Titanium Cinch Buckles. They hold well and are lighter than the standard aluminum cinch buckles. Hope the info helps. Let me know if you have any other questions!! Nick

My favorite hammocks are from Dream Hammock. Go with the Darien if you want the bugnet sewn in and go with the Sparrow if you want a removable bugnet/overcover!

@@TripleNickelOutdoors thanks a lot! i was watching those last night, indeed i like them.. there are just way soo many options! i'm a noob, have never used a hammock and want to do wise with my $, plus i'm down in Costa Rica, returning any thing for modifications is a nightmare in logistics and paying import taxes double.. but i thank you very much for your videos they really are helpful! now back into research.. i must admit I really am a bit lost on so many ioptions.. one thinng i had figured out is the sparrow is the one i want. thanks a lot man!

100%. If you’re only using whoopie slings and don’t care about switching out suspensions, then how you have it set up is fine!

Don't use a becket with mule tape, use a marlin spike. I carve small piece of wood the size of my pinky finger for my spike. Mule tape is awesome cause its so cheap to replace.

I went through a very similar journey and ended up at the same place. The only difference is I use 15 feet of spider web 2.0 because i have large trees. Also I found the Becket Hitch was sometime difficult to untie, so I added what some of us on Hammock Forums have started calling the Myers’ Becket Yanker - kzread.info/dash/bejne/o6Kr07KJodi2gtY.html It makes tear down a breeze.

David Luu I gotta check out the yanker! I was going to go with the Spider Web Straps but I had them slip on my a few times. I also found that if you pull up when undoing the knot, it seems to come out easier than pulling down! Thanks for the comment!

Yes the Dutch straps are 1.5 grams per foot. I haven’t used them though. I’ve had a good experience with the venom straps not slipping so I’ve stayed with those!

I'm kind of baffled by all this. I sewed loops on some nylon straps, and tie them on the hammock loops with a sheet bend. I'm always the fastest one to set up when I'm with others. No little bits to lose.

Have you checked out the jbend for attaching the strap to your continuous loops? I much prefer it to the Becket hitch. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hJ9hso-GhtGzgM4.html I am too frugal to use the venom straps, so I use the jbend with nylon straps from harbor freight.

Electronics4life I have checked it out but never really used it for my setup. I found that if you need to readjust your initial placement for the knot, the Becket hitch is a little easier to fine tune. But for untying the jbend does come out easier. Do you like it? Do you have a tip on how to find that sweet spot for placement?

The Jbend can be harder to get the sweet spot for placement, that is for sure. As you mentioned, the untying of the becket hitch led me to the jbend. Once in a while the Becket would jam on me. Tying knots is part of what makes hammocking fun for me, so I do not mind the extra fiddliness of the jbend. The is no single answer for a hammock suspension, that is for sure. Electronics4life I found that if I pull up on the Becket hitch it came undone easier. And if you try to EASSSSSE into the hammockit doesn’t load the knot as much but that’s hard to do! Lol I’ll keep experimenting with the jbend! Be good!

Very nice overview of the suspension options you've used. Are you still using the Venom straps with the Becket Hitch or are you using something else these days? I've recently been trying a pair of 12' Dutch Spider Web 1.5 straps connected directly to the continuous loops. I find the Becket Hitch is sometimes quite difficult to untie after loading with this suspension. However, the Marlin Spike Hitch works very well and the whole suspension is ~1.8 oz including the Dutchware toggles.

I still experiment with different systems, but right now I’m using the ducthware Spider/Poly webbing with titanium cinch buckles. Still lightweight and I like the ease of using cinch buckles. Enjoy!! Nick

Did you ever try 2" UHMWPE webbing through hardware that says it can't be used with this material, and have success? I'm using 1" UHMWPE with the now discontinued Dutch Buckles, no slippage, no half-hitch backups...just works. (I slipped when "liking" this video, to click dislike...not true. thumbs down for YT.)
